If you have a big game coming up and are running some unbalanced sets that you haven't yet shown, do you wait until the second half so no adjustments can be made during the half or just go for it in the first half?

Anyone have any team building initiatives for bringing together kids from different schools? Could be as simple as some sort of name game or as complex as a problem solving initiative.
As always, thanks in advance.

Coaches,
The wealth of knowledge and wisdom shared here is much appreciated.
As you share, I notice some of you clearly state where you coach while others could be from Alaska as easily as Alabama.
Not giving away too many hints to potential competition is understandable. Likewise, I understand the "this is who we are, see if you can stop us" ideology too.
Just curious what your opinion is on sharing x's and o's w/regard to identifying yourself and/or program.

airrader,
As I read more and more, I'm slowly getting a grasp on the different systems/influences/styles.
In the Air Raid, is the qb always at 7 yards? Is this, as Coach Seay offered, to keep center protection?

OOO......................OXO..........................O ..O.....................O........O........................ ..............................O.............................
More as a trick series than base formation but you can come to the line and based on numbers run a screen left, hitch/fade to the split right, iso/option (inc. shovel)/sweep, etc. with your backs.

Coach...could you post half of the list you wrote down? Any chance you found your answer somewhere else? If so, would you mind sharing? Thanks!

Great responses coaches, thank you. Would most of you agree that you are simply tweaking your base plays to take advantage of what the defense is giving? Do you ever install a truly new play two weeks ahead of time for an upcoming opponent?

We play most of our games on Saturdays and therefore spend Sundays watching film before our weekly meeting. At our Monday practice (first team practice of the week) we install our plays and plan for our upcoming opponent.
As you know, after watching film for the next two nights (Mon & Tues) I inevitably end up seeing more tendencies, weaker down lineman, etc.
Do you install your offensive game plan your first team practice after a game? If not when do you and why?

I know the "Jimmy's and Joe's" saying but was wondering what you've found made your program successful beyond the players and scheme?

VT, Rutgers and a host of other schools have symbols for work ethic, philosophies, etc.
What other tangible symbols do you use or know of that you can point to from the practice field and sideline and say that represents what we're all about?

I experienced a lot of the same problems so this year I went into the booth. It was so much easier to see the coverage and attack a defenses weakness, I didn't need to rely on someone else's eyes, of course I did miss the sideline communication, especially during timeouts. I'm toying with same idea. Selfishly, I want to be on the sideline with the kids in the heat of it so to speak. BUT, having just had a coach of 20 years retire, our eyes-in-the-sky will be somewhat suspect. I imagine it will be so much easier to call plays from the tower especially after having watched film all week from basically the same perspective.

Coaches w/girlfriends or fiances...live w/her before you get married so that she 'lives' the life so to speak and there are no surprises once the big day arrives.
Setting up a "date night" has been great for us. During the season, on Wednesday night at 6:30 I take her wherever she wants to go for dinner. Half the time she doesn't care where it is (could be pizza and 'sodas') so long as we're hanging out.
If she goes to your games, ask her what you she thinks you could be doing better...it's not like you don't hear this from everyone around you anyway and it gives her a sense of ownership. I was blown away when she simply said, "you're being too cute." She was right.
Lastly, simple weekend away once the season is done.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new laptop for cutting/filtering game film and then burning it to discs, etc.
Anyone have any suggestions or words of wisdom? Thanks in advance.

I was just reading the "Rodriguez Spread Offense: from the beginning to now" thread (great read) and was wondering how many of you agree or disagree with the idea that if you play many cold weather/sloppy games that the power game is ultimately more effective than the spread?
