I have been a HC now for 4 years.
The previous HC went 6-4 6-4 5-6, lost 1st round of the playoffs.
I came in and went 5-6, lost 1st round of the playoffs my 1st year (I did not win in my 1st year more than the guy before, I just did the best I could and laid my foundation for my vision of the program) That's all you can do!
Since then we have been 7-4 (third round of the playoffs 1st time in school history) 9-3 (1st region championship in 27 years) 6-4-1 this year.
Winning the 1st year means what? If I were to GOD forbid get fired or if I left.
I would hope the next guy does it his way and doesn't say if I don't win 7 next year, I ain't being successful.

You're showing your age again... Back in those days, you really could get an advantage by going to clinics, finding books and going to colleges..Now a days we learn everything from the internet. I am a better coach but others have closed basically closed the gap. Now IMO the advantage is on the field technology and the ability to adjust on the fly faster than your opponent I will be there 2, my WR is playing! My staff is going to the Atlanta Glazier's. I am NOT impressed by the lineups probably won't go in, chill outside and talk to other coaches to learn more.

I couldn't fathom letting them go.
When we got out at 2:15, they had to be in the locker room at 3pm, gave them time to move cars to the fieldhouse, etc..
We had chapel for those who wanted to come.
Team Dinner at 3:30-4:15
Tape, dress, hang Out and then game time.

i did for 4 years i was Mr Alumni 3rd generation to go there i was angry as heck when a different HC came in, so i left i was mad at the time but in the long run it was the best thing possible for my career and life i am infinitely happier at my new school have made some great friends have had some great players/young people i have a nice teaching job and an easy commute my advice is do not feel like you owe the school something because you went there if a better opportunity comes you need to leave often (especially when you coach young) you need to get away just to establish some more respect, and see how other places operate for example at my alma mater, i was coach brett when i left i became coach dudley Man that was the best advice I got. My former English teacher/Mom and then co-worker said to me, I didn't owe my Alma Mater anything. My diploma already had it's name on it. I became and better coach and found success. They were in my region, the only thing I hated was having to beat them pretty good, the last 2 years we were really good and they played hard but no so much.

I have had great success with a lot them, especially if they are BB players.
Our BB coach isn't a fan of "his" kids playing football. Well he is pissed this year. Starting Center is playing 6'6, 225. 6th man played last year now he is getting big looks 6'3 WR. Another one will help at LB probably won't start but 6'0 214.
Surprised some are playing. our BB team made the Final 4 and Elite Eight last 2 years. But we have had 19 kids go to school the last 2 years and that changes things.

I hired the best guy to be my DC. Does he run the defense that I wanted no, do I care nope! Because he has a sound scheme, I understand, more importantly he understands it, can make adjustments and he can teach it.

I guess to me that's not true. Yes they have doen reports on RPO and 4-2-5.
But also on the 3-4, cover 4, defending the wing-t, how to attack with the wing-t, etc..
To each it's on.

I love it, but understand I AM NOT THE NORMAL HC..
Meaning, I don't tell my band to be quiet, HELL I DANCE pre-game with beats Headphones on and I dance during the games.
That's who I am. I haven't tried to be different. NOW I rub some HC's the wrong way. I have had some old school legends tell me (I think you are are a great coach and can move to a different more prominent school, but you have to change). They may be correct.
But I am who I am, my kids don't mind it. so we play music and it hasn't been a problem.

Our kids lift/run in the morning b4 school we average 80 kids 10-12.
50 of these kids play another sport in the spring. Our track team will probably win state.
We have Spring Football in GA, on our team to get equipment you must have made 75% of the workouts from Jan-April. You receive 15 bonus days if you play another spring sport (so built in take a day if needed) and 8 days if you completed a winter sport. Most come anyway, unless they had a meet or game that ran late the previous day.
Our kids go to practice, extra help, etc.. in the spring.
On Tuesday's in April I do Math Bootcamp for EOCT testing on Tuesday's, I like it I have 20 kids, why ebcause they don't have to work about missing workouts

That's always has been the case. Not going to kill it. at UGA Dawg Nite. They average 700 kids, top 100 on 1 field the rest Analyst, GA's and guys like me. FCS and below can still do satellite camps I always thought there were at least other college coaches at the camps working so kids could get exposure. Like go to Ohio St camp because coaches from X,Y,and Z will be ther too. I know local D 2 guys would go work camps at Big Ten schools so they could look at kids, that out the window now? There are coach! a lot of D3, FCS help but you are correct that the studs get treated differently!

That's gonna kill college camps. correct... everyone is pretty upset about it the SEC got butt hurt, they whined a lot... NCAA caved in to them ... and now the kids, small colleges, and high schools who host satellite camps are the ones who lose out the satellite camp we were planning was going to be a big fundraiser for us ... that is gone now While the SEC was mad, not there issue anyone. PAC-12 vote no, The ACC voted no, so did the Sun Belt and MWC and I can't understand. It was a 7-5 conference vote on the ban. SEC had 1 vote, we have to hold the other 6 accountable!

We have one of our sporting goods suppliers at our annual player parent night. We have him bring in all the "Top" helmets from Riddell/Schutt/Xneith and allow the kids to try them on and if there parents want to purchase them (we pay for reconditioning ever year)They are able to do so. After there playing time is over if they would like to Donate the helmet to the program we gladly take them. It also take some of the burden off of our program. We simply tell the parents "several of you will go out and buy at $300-$500 baseball bat in hope it make your son have a batter batting average or go out and buy your son a $150 pair of basketball shoes because they are in the in thing. You will wear that same football helmet all four years." Every year we have about 15-20 parents that purchase Helmets. Out of those we will get to keep 8-10 of them. That is pretty much how we have ended up with Xenith helmets. Really helps recover our cost for those rejected helmets. I saw that on a team's website. We are doing the same thing this year! We already buy a ton of Riddell but will probably be moving to Schutt do to our new vendor deals.

Use Big Cartel!
You cna set up the items up want. You can start small with 5 items, it does quantity check and once it runs out they can't purchase anymore to save you from having to reimburse them

we own mainly Riddell's a few Xenith's. Xenith is the BEST HELMET BY FAR! Customer service needs improving. But if I had to purchased 1 and I love Riddell's, Xenith is a better helmet. I have had starters turn in riddell for xenith's.

Twitter is one way.
In my three years as a HC we have had 41 kids go on to play college ball, 18 this year but I had 33 seniors a mix of FBS,FCs,D2,D3,NAIA,JUCO and Club ball.
I take recruiting as serious as I do games. So we spend a lot of time on it. Now I have been blessed with some kids who are really good ball players.
But listen every kid isn't going to want to play college football, every kid will not receive athletic or academic money to play, BUT there is a place for everyone in my opinion.
Right now is Junior Day season through end of April. If you have a few rising Seniors who are good kids but not FBS kids, you can still email FCS/D2 schools and get them up for Junior Days, increases exposure.
Recommend summer camps for your kids to COLLEGES, tell them where you think they should go, etc....

I think you guys are wrong a GRINDER is someone who works.
OVERWORKING is not gridning.. But then again your thoughts on overworking might be different than someone's else's..
I think the word is over used on both sides. SOME FOOTBALL COACHES TODAY ARE PLAIN LAZY! They just want to show up and coach on Friday then made because they can't get results.
Then someone hang around the fieldhouse just to say they GRIND. That ain't it either. Find the middle ground

I talk to our basketball players about doing both. The issue at my school is the basketball coach doesn't like his kids playing football. But I don't pressure them, usually our kids work them. I do tell them you are 6'3 and play PF on the basketball team, don't know of any D1 basketball players at that spot.
Our starting WR plays basketball and is much more physical on the court now. Talk to them about playing both, but don't beg. I see nothing home with talking to them.

1. PLAYERS - I agree with fantom, good programs don't always have d1 players but good players 2. COACHES - You need them to run a REAL Program 3. WEIGHT ROOM - Must have helps create players
Then Support & MONEY...
Admin Support helps you make 2 and 3 a priority and Money allows you to do things that can make a difference.
