I wear black or gray Under Armor golf pants which are really nothing more than expensive kahkis. If it's a monsoon outside I will wear wind pants/athletic pants.

And I've coached in the AZ and SoCal deserts, so it can be done in the heat

Cargo Shorts - OL, regular khakis just don't have enough pockets and long pants just aren't comfortable for me
Having said that, when I'm not the HC, if he requires long pants, that's what I'll wear (as I have in the past).

Nike Flat Front Golf Shorts in Preseason, but Pants in-season. You are a professional coach, and should dress the part. UA makes nice product as well, just match them to the same brand of your uniforms/1/4 zip/polo/jacket/hat/shoes and don't mix brands or risk looking like you don't pay attention to the details.
Personally, as a coach and a sporting goods sales professional, my pet peeves are:
#1. Pleats. Just don't do it.
#2. Cargo Pants/Shorts. Really, just don't do it. You're not 12, it's not 1997, and you're not on a hike. Be better than Wal-Mart.
#3. Tough guys who wear shorts in 0-degree weather. We get it, Harry Hardass - your steely gaze and tire-carrying gait let us know you're a Grade A BA; now grow up and put some pants on.
#4. Sock Game. If you're going to wear white tube socks with shorts, you better be pulling a 1950-1989 look with short shorts, all black shoes, and a tucked-in polo and you might as well pull them up over the calves. It's fine to wear black crew socks with black trainers (never white) but only on the practice field, and never on game night. If you're a coach and wearing shorts, buy a 6-pack or two of no-show socks and call it a season. #5. Non-athletic shoes. Unless there are inches of snow on the ground, your hunting or construction boots are not sideline appropriate. Your entire team can afford Nike or Under Armour cleats, trainers, and street sneaks...you can afford a pair for practice and games too. Oh, you're the head coach? Call your team dealer and buy your staff a pair of shoes - you'll look professional, and they will love you for it. Also, the $35 New Balance "Dad" shoes from Payless are not appropriate. Again, call your team dealer - if you do good business together, I'm sure he'll hook you up with a pair, and you'll never pay full price for your staff.
#6. Sweatpants. I know Mike Tomlin thinks he's Kool Moe Dee, but just don't. I actually don't mind the long-sleeve Dri-FIT tee/crew sweatshirt/hoody look, especially for assistants, as long as it's paired with real pants. Would you show up to an interview in sweat pants? No. So why would you dress in them to coach on Friday night or Saturday afternoon? Also, if you own anything that could be called "wind pants", throw them away. There are some new woven pants on the market that are acceptable and even nice, but if your's still having piping on them, it's time they are retired.
The kids have known it for years and so should you: look good, feel good, play (coach) good. Well, at least more confidently.

When it's hot I wear shorts. When it's not, khakis. If the boss said that we couldn't wear shorts that'd be fine but he doesn't.

Asterisk to my post above: I agree that this is acceptable in hot climates, at least at the high school level. However, I don't recall any college or pro coaches wearing shorts on the sidelines on gameday.

If I did, though, I doubt that the staff meeting where they discussed prospective hires would go, "Boy, that guy can coach but he wears shorts. SHORTS!!". And that's your prerogative, and we all have different beliefs in coaching. However, I would take into account a guy's professionalism and attention to detail when discussing a prospective hire. I know a guy who used to coach - as a head coach - in sandals. To me, that shows a level of unprofessionalism, and unprofessionalism is what led to his dismissal halfway...yes, halfway...through his second season as a head coach. Without winning a game. Now, I would never disqualify a guy for wearing shorts, especially if they were golf shorts or it was a uniform look by his staff that was presentable. Fashion is certainly not the most important part of football, but it is a factor, and how you present yourself says a lot about yourself and your program. In today's world, perception IS important, and if you're not in tune with that, good luck.

Anyone wear spikeless golf shoes? Our golf coach wears them to schools with slacks and looks sharp. My concern is one bad day (rain) on our field and the sidelines can be a mess. But if I coached on Field Turf, I would definitely push the HC on those.

Wow....maybe it was the crutches, stool, and orange pants that sort of throw it off a bit. That pic is just pathetic. Look at the coach to his left. What would be a thought caption from that guy?

But if I coached on Field Turf, I would definitely push the HC on those. Check out the new Nike Vapor Speed Turf for your staff. Lots of R&D went into this shoe; designed specifically to go from the weight room to the practice field. Perfect to save your athletes' feet during the week, but also great for coaches with the Lunarlon sole for cushioning. I think this shoe will become a staple in every kid's locker in years to come and I'm sure UA & Adidas will have one out next year after seeing this. Nike tested it extensively with the Seahawks and I think USC, and a video we watched at the Nike offices had a player stating that he could cut as well on this shoe (on turf) as he could in a cleat...hard to believe, but they did show video of receivers running crisp routes in them and not having any traction issues. store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/vapor-speed-turf-football-shoe/pid-10950933/pgid-11068678I'm getting ready to get myself a pair and already have a few staffs ordering them.
