If we install on the field-occasionally we might have a formation check for a game week-then we will turn it off.
Ours is loud during pre-practice and our first few periods that are team oriented. All coaches are chasing their positions around with reminders.
We turn it down during Indy where there is more teaching.
I like that it is difficult to communicate during team it forces our kids to yell and they don't like to do that. Then you get into a game in front of five thousand people and you are used to it.
Most of our install and teaching is done on the whiteboard or hudl now. IMHO everyone's teaching should be mostly inside. Say it. See it. Walk it. Run it.
My biggest problem with the music is that it adds tons of energy to our practices but sometimes we go on the road and their stadiums or music choices are real PC. It becomes too laid back and we are used to all that external audible energy source.
All in all I'll take the energy we gain day to day over any of the distractions. Yea there are kids dancing and singing on the sidelines How many of you turn your music up before a big lift or have you ever forget your headphones at the gym?

I would love to have music at practice, but our HC and our AD aren't of that same mindset. Older dudes and that is fine.
I love the energy it brings on those suck days. And I think it is a great incentive to be able to take away as a discipline thing.

I don't think it has anything to do with kids honestly. If you have problems with music at practice and the kids are missing it then that's on the staff.
With that said it's all about your teaching style. If you're a talker and have to do a lot of teaching on the field music is a problem. If your kids spend more time standing around and listening to the coach than getting reps music will be a serious problem. If you do most of your teaching on the board and through video/hudl then music will only serve to amplify practice.

i love it kids get energy from it, i get energy from it
finding the right volume is ideal, loud enough to turn up, but not too loud that you can't communicate during drills/small group
i think you can turn it way up in team, because the kids can never hear you yell in the game anyway and if you have a loud crowd, it helps them get ready for it
that said, we don't do it often, my HC is not a fan of it i want to get a bluetooth receiver next year, and connect it to the audio system in press box, then pair it to my phone... so i can adjust music/volume from my pocket... just a dream, do not know if i will achieve it
biggest issue is getting clean music, i have done the pandora thing and turned off explicit content but the results are so so, some explicit stuff still sneaks through here and there

I always have the managers play it during our defensive time.
Kids love it, energy is high and it forces our secondary kids to communicate coverages by signal (like they have to on game night)
Offense uses it about 50% of the time.

We use it as long as the kids can stay focused. If it is a game plan install period we will turn it off during teaching time. Even though we go through it on the board and they have seen film, some kids learn it best by walking through it on the field.

I don't like their music. I don't understand it, I guess. So...NO.

Have played it, very inconsistent with it. Don't really care- our practices are high paced so if they have time to even think about what's playing on the speakers we're not doing our job as coaches. We will play it during summer workouts though...

If we had a stadium with a sound system at the school we might play music. We don't, though, so no music.

Our HC plays only the instrumental versions of songs at practice so we don't have to worry about inappropriate lyrics. I can't stand rap/hip-hop so he has to set the play list where every fifth song or so is hard rock or heavy metal so his OL coach (me) can maintain some sanity!

Hate it. Get the positives from it and might even implement it myself once I become a header, but personally hate it

Love music at practice. Energy is better. Focus is better because of the energy. Practice is fun for the players. Sure it's hard, but listening to your favorite jams makes it more enjoyable. Music makes me a better coach because it shuts me up and let's the kids get more reps.
Coaches that hate it often fall into two groups: a) they are older coaches, b)they talk a lot at practice. Nothing wrong with either though. Music is not for every team and staff.

The Article makes sense but we have it twice a week, would prefer to have it more but we are only In the stadium twice for practice.

I find this thread very interesting. I am only 28, but I absolutely hate music at practice. We tried it 2 years ago, it didn't last a week. It was a HUGE distraction. We don't even have music in the weight room, we never have. I tell the guys all the time it is their job to be mentally prepared everyday for the task at hand. We as coaches bring energy to the weight room and practice and we have had very good results. My coaches know that we do not get any off days. We say, fake it till you make it. If you're not feeling it that day, you better fake it in a way that nobody can tell. We try to structure things where we rely solely on internal motivation, nothing external. Like someone mentioned earlier, when you get used to external motivators, you may struggle at times.

I think it's a distraction if you allow it to be. I see both sides to practice but the weight room we have to have it cranked. Even the last place I was at, relatively conservative old school community had music blaring in the weight room. We, coaches, are high energy in there but the kids just sat through 8 hours of school being docile, we see the weight room as a way to release it all and have fun...part of that for us is music.

We've done it, but I dont care for it. If its loud enough to be heard then its loud enough to drown out players from hearing me, and I will get loud a lot as is. Plus I work with coaches that have lots of dead time where they work with just one kid or talk amongst themselves, and the kids just get into the music and off on their own (then I have to bring them back to pay attention).
From what Ive read you don't want to have music with lyrics playing while learning, it can be distracting. But thre are so many studies on this stuff that who knows.

We always have music on our Thursday walk through. We very rarely have it during a real practice. I'm not sure how much our players respond to it. It's never anything I would listen to, but, I wouldn't expect the kids to want to listen to any Buffet.
I'm okay with it, but I don't want to end up having to yell over it.

It is $10 a month. It allows you to setup playlists and download them to be available for offline use. We have a practice that is about 7 hours long and growing. And we have a game day playlist. I use this for my own personal use also. It saves me money instead of buying songs on iTunes or using up my data on pandora.

SWEET CHERRY PIEEEEEEEEEE!!! lol seriously though i love having music at practice. And I listen to everything. And always try to put a broad variety of stuff on practice/weight room mixes. Appeals to everyone. Makes other people tolerate other music. You'll hear classic rock, old rap, new rap, punk, metallica, old country, new country, blues, reggae, reggaeton, freaking everything. Never know what youre gonna get. haha

Besides, studies have shown that music can increase performance. I agree w/ Coach Helton to a point. I don't like music early in the season when more teaching is being done. I think this is when kids are starting to develop their communication and "buzz words," so we go without more during practice. Once we get to Week 1 I want to music up so they have to communicate over it. To me the music is exactly the same as crowd noise on Fridays. I don't hear it, but I know it's there because I'm yelling during team time. I think it prepares kids for this same exact feeling on Fridays. That said, nothing pisses me off more than when some kid is dancing during Install! So, we've gone to turning it off during Install and Indy.

We have music as much as we can. Having to be louder in my communication is the least of my worries if our guys have the energy from music. I wish our guys didn't need it for an energy boost, but its fine. I mean to be honest, I'm out there dancing as much as they are. Football is hard, and we work REALLY HARD at it. Might as well have some fun.
Our music guy uses Spotify premium and has a few different playlists. We'll do throwback Thursday with some 90's pop/hip hop and some classic rock on it. Breaks up the week a bit. Tuesday is always pretty much straight rap so the guys bring a lot of energy on the first big day of practice for the week. Only problem we've ever had is last year on Back To The Future Day we started the practice with the theme song from it. (More for coaches amusement than players) Our music guy accidentally hit repeat on his phone when he hit play so it played like 10 times before we realized what was going on. The kids were really confused..

Like the idea of music, never really had it during the week except Thursday walk thru. Like others have posted I think it would be a great way to bring energy during the grid of the season. I like music in the weight room as well. Helps bring energy, yes I agree that its up to each individual to bring energy, but my question to those guys who don't like it is..Do you not listen to music when you lift yourself?? I have always had music going when I lift/lifted. I agree don't play it early when you are doing nothing but teaching form, but after that, let it play.

Yeah just like everything you can go overboard with it. I don't want it so loud that I have to scream to talk to someone right beside me.
