I haven't in a few years BUT schools load up the kids and go to FCA camp in Georgia all the time.
It really is fun, we spend 3 days and 2 nights and practice football for a total of 6 hours max.

Work on your team.
Scout the film for what they did last year BUT that is just for your sake. ONLY worry about you right now!

Just saw this thread. Have seen a few. very few, but have saw them.
With parents now redshirting a few 8th graders, 9th grades starting has become common.
I have started a few freshmen myself.
Oh, I've seen freshmen start on varsity but not because they were legitimate varsity football players. The "redshirt" freshman would make sense because he is technically a sophomore. I have seen a handful of sophs who were legitimate varsity players. But freshmen...never. Not once. And my own kid has been a 2-way varsity starter since his freshmen year. But that was due to low varsity numbers, not because he was a legit varsity player.
I guess it depends. I have started legitimate freshmen starters. I had a 6'4 260 OT start as a freshmen a few years ago.
Also, lost a playoff game twice to a freshmen QB...
I guess it depends, it's not the norm but here at least once a year at our highest classification, I see a freshman that is a man amongst boys.
And the amount of Sophomores is unreal.

7th and 8th graders can play varsity football? That is crazy. How is that possibly safe? Sounds like a lawsuit just waiting to happen. Heck...in the 20 or so years I have been around high school football, I have never even seen a FRESHMAN who was a legitimate varsity football player, never mind kids still in middle school!

Let me say this..
I don't have a problem with hair, DO what you feel is necessary! Your program for example, I still make my boys take out earrings when they enter the field house. I have watched ears split with helmets. But do you....

If hair is making it so a helmet cannot fit and protect properly, we may suggest a hair cut. If not, who cares. IF and ONLY IF THIS that is when it could be an issue!

Also part of the reason I like a 3 man front on defense. 2 platoon is easy for us at skill, HURT likes heck on the Line! That was more of our issue!

So we are a modified 2 platoon team I had 110 kids in the program. Approx. 2-3 FBS kids a year.
Those kids played both ways some!
We teach kids both sides in the spring and summer. During the season, we did JV/V Indy and team, etc....
We probably had about 5 or so kids that went both ways.
A lot of them rested on offense. Our starting Nickel was 2nd string RB, our starting WR was the backup DB. Played 2 Lineman on defense some.
2 years ago we had a 6'4, 300 DT and 6'5 240 DE, they played 40% of the snaps on defense split evenly (unless it was goal line)
I say try your hardest to be 2 platoon BUT when you have a DOG, play him as much as possible!

2. 2 Min drill, 1:35 left offense needs TD 2 timeouts -40. Offense how do you score, D how do you stop them
3. Coming out, offense has ball on 2, :35 seconds left and defense has 2 timeouts. offense how do you get the 1st down, defense how do you stop them

Coach you might want to rethink your career choices....sorry but if you cant see that education is more important than football your priorities are just messed up. football is not a priority in life, less than 1% of these kids will make a living with football. football isn't going to put food on the family table. And for a coach that coaches student athletes and not professionals to not see that, indicates to me your in the wrong line of work. If he can't handle being a STUDENT athlete then don't do part 2.
Having had 6 kids be of our Top 10 kids play and graduate. You can do it, it depends on what you want to do.
He should give him the time off. But also FB is not in this young man's career. And there is NO problem in that! He can't do both everyone can't.

The part that I am struggling to understand is the "no sprint" days. When working on this skills, how do you work on many of the skills by walking or talking? Special Teams? Many of our kids learn best by doing and it will be hard to teach them a skill without allowing them to do it, or having them do it by walking. I am fairly open minded, but how do you work your special teams if kids can't run? How do you work on tackling. I struggle having a kid walk into a roll tackle and feel like that is going to prep him for Friday night? Anyone who has experience with this model care to share how they have adapted it or overcame some of these things to make it work with your program? No sprint doesn't mean not practicing and running. A no sprint day is already how you practice.
When you sprint you get FULL recovery.

I've done both!
I get dressed now, but as the HC, I came out the locker room late.
B4 I use to get dressed after we went back in and wore headphones, talked to me kids 1 by 1.
Took them off to have a conversation with the other HC and went about my business.
This past year, I stayed in the locker room later ie, my skill guys were probably out about 20 minutes b4 I came out. I spoke with all my kids in the locker room and came out dressed.
I don't think this made me a d-bag...

I am looking to see how OCs can manage to coach OL and be the OC. We are toying with the idea this year. But I worry about being on the same page with the QB and coaching up him up off the field. Don't really know where to go with that. But thats my obsession right now. And any culture or program stuff with utilizing limited roster and coaches numbers. I get tired of going to all these clinics where hearing ideas that involve having 2 coaches per position, 2 scout teams, and other ideas that we simply cannot do. Got have a QB coach you can trust and you all must be speaking the same language.
Pre-Season installs you and the QB coach must go through together.

Becoming a better O line coach. Tried using McNally’s double under/ tip of the spear type blocking technique this year and I felt it made us worse and less physical as linemen. Looking into the Ed Wariner DVD’s and looking for other ideas on how to get my O line to be tail kickers for 5-6 physical seconds each snap. I need to become a better line coach if I want my kids to be better linemen. Me 2. Let me know what you come up with looking in Chennis Berry and probably OLP..

I can get with it. We didn't wear pads on Wednesday. I never wear full pads. If I can't get my cats to Friday all that prep won't matter. If you read more of his stuff he has adapted to weight training. They life Monday-Thursday in the off season. Sprint training on Monday and Wednesday.
Some of us dismiss his ideas.. Yet Hawk Tackle, Tip of Spear you love.
The idea is simple he wants his players to play fresh on Fridays!
Guy named @coachbdixon on Twitter is playing for a state championship hitting one day a week!
Yes Football is about Jimmies and Joe's. Figure out how to use yours!
So u guys who do a Sprint practice what does it look like?

get reps with the offense to learn base plays...
