Hi everyone, The thread on when everyone starts got me thinking about how everyone approaches their training camp with their teams. - How long are your practices (not including film and meetings)?
- Do you practice 2 times per day or just once?
- How long are your meetings O & D?
- How long are your film sessions each day?
- Does your team still lift weights during training camp?
Here is where we are at:
We go 2 practices each day one short and one long.
Practice 1 is 2-3:30 then practice 2 is 4-6. This gives our guys a chance to hydrate and eat a little it also allows our community coaches who work regular jobs a chance to get to the school while we can get some work in. Last year we did a lot of special teams in that initial practice. We are bantering around the idea of using some of it as an active meeting time with our players where we install / walk thru / quiz players get them to teach each other etc. Then do some special teams skills and scheme. That is a bit of a departure from traditionally what we have done. However I don't want to just have the team moving for the sake of moving.
Curious as to how you all approach this time of the year. The rest of the season is pretty static schedules etc but this time early on is important and I am looking for some other ways to attack this time of year. We don't start for more than 2 weeks sadly so still planning away!

2 practices.
First practice is 2 hours, run just like an in-season practice.
Second practice complements the first, time varies. Fix it session, after watching film of first practice we go out and drill the things we need to fix. Next we do speed training, then we lift. Friday’s we condition to let them recover over weekend.

For us we are in a unique situation being a military boarding school. The boys must do PT. We are limited by our state (Commiefornia) on the number of hours we can have to practice. The weightlifting coach for the school runs the conditioning "practice" in the morning, which includes weightlifting. This leaves us a full 3 hours we can practice in the afternoon, we usually only go 2-2.5 hours. Our practices are the same we would do in-season, obviously with more of an emphasis on teaching than prepping for a specific opponent.

Because we get so much access to our kids during the summer and have a team camp. 2 a days is a thing of the past for us.
