I have read many thoughts on Monday’s practice and got me thinking about what everyone does on Thursday? We do a helmets only walk through. The older I get the more I hate it. I have thought about going at least helmets and shoulder pads so no freak injuries happen during team. I am very curious to how everyone handles Thursday’s?

I like to go full gear, you never know when some clumsy freshman falls face first into some guys thigh, or any freak accident for that matter. Let them suit up and run through everything on air. Should be a positive atmosphere, balls to the walls for a very short period. At the end of practice, confidence should be sky high!

We do a walkthrough. We wear helmets if we lost the week before. We don’t wear anything but shorts and t shirts if we won. 10-12 plays of O and D and special teams. Usually about 1 hour on the field.

Why would you have freshmen practicing with varsity?

A few years ago I changed to full gear on thursdays not for any sort of injury reasons... but because when the kids wear just helmets they seem to screw around more/be less focused Being in full gear has seemed to help guys feel like it is more of a real practice, and not going through the motions waiting til friday night

We just do helmets and girdles. But we keep them focused by 'playing the game'. It's a short walk through practice, but the whole thing is scripted as if it was a game. This makes sure that we go through every situation that we may see on Friday night. And it keeps the kids engaged, as they're coming on and off the field for offense, defense, and various special teams. So they have to listen.

We do a quick Indy period lead by the seniors in the position group and then a team/kick script. It only takes about 45 minutes then the hc talks to them a little bit in the stands.
The crazy thing is that he asks assistants (except for coordinators)to take the day off and spend it with their families. He had been somewhere that had done it and like it so he decided to do it as well. I had never heard of such a thing amd didn’t feel right just missing so I stayed around and helped where I could and spent time with my family after practice.

Thur- Helmet, shoulder pads, girdle, volleyball knee pads, shorts (same gear as every day)
15min All Kicking Game 2min h2o 15min Offense -5/+5 and 2min offense (2 groups ready) 2min h2o 15min Defense Scout book once through for 1's and top 5 plays for the 2's 5min "Mascot" sprints (team building/pride) and talk-in
Then find a barstool at the end of the bar.

There was a sport science thing a few years ago that said a player performs better on Friday night if they are full go the day before (if I remember correctly it was chip kelly with the eagles so maybe it doesnt work?!) I started doing it and not sure about the science behind it, but did notice it was taken more seriously in full.

The Eagles are different in how they practice, and also in when they practice: On the day before games, Kelly’s Eagles conduct a full-speed, up-tempo practice, rather than the leisurely walk-throughs run by essentially every other team in the league. “Through our research, through science, [we learned] that you need to get the body moving if you’re going to be playing,” Kelly explained. “We used the same formula at Oregon and I spent a lot of time on how to go about it, how we think you should train, and it worked for us there and it worked for us here.” Specifically, while at Oregon, Kelly visited with trainers of elite Olympic athletes, and those trainers balked at the idea of doing next to nothing physically taxing in the 48 hours prior to competing. Kelly switched his approach and began conducting full-speed practice the day before games, and the results speak for themselves. From Grantland

We go helmets, girdles, and shoulder pads. It is an uptempo walk thru/review. Stretch/warm up 20 minute special teams review. 20 minute Offensive review. 20 minute Defensive review.

We go no pads for a little more than hour. Passing league “Magneto” caps on
ST review
Defense alignment and assignment review. Walk through run fits if necessary. Quick defensive skeleton. DL goes over protections we’ll see and moves conducive to defeating it.
Offense goes against fronts holding bags and carries out script against favorite fronts all mixed up. Quick offensive 7-7. OL reviews favorite stunts and twists.
Every week a unique situation is introduced at the end. Every swinging dick needs to understand the situation and why we’re doing what we do in said situation.

We went shells on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Wednesdays were the only day we went full pads. Monday and Thursday practices went a lot better when they were shells instead of helmets.

Would you care to elaborate and explain how you script it as if it was a game? I like doing the same but we have a lot of our special teams guys playing in the JV game on Thursday.

Here's our Thursday Script. This is all vs air. Some years we wore pads, some years just game cloth and helmets. The last thing on the list is "Crisis Control." We practice what to do in case a fight breaks out during the game. It has saved our butts a few times over the years. Most important thing on the script.

We learned the hard way many years ago that the thing that escalates a fight on the field is when everyone runs out on the field to engage. We had a game called in the 2nd quarter by the refs because it got so ugly with players AND coaches. When our Principal called the HC in on Monday he asked "What was your Action Plan?" We realized our Action Plan was "Our kids will never fight," which turned out to be a pretty weak plan. So we came up with something.
We normally form up into a squad to start practice, end practice, etc on the Head Coach, so if something starts to happen on the field we call out "Squad Up" and the players all run to wherever the Head Coach is. This leaves the other team with no one to fight. We had one game where this happened and the opposing team started to fight themselves because they didn't have anyone else to fight. (The opposing HC got fired over that one) We even got letters from that teams parents praising our kids for keeping their cool.
On Thursday we have someone pretend to start a fight, and we practice squading up on the sideline and then remind them of the consequences if they run out there. (Also reminds the Coaches. In some cases they're worse than the kids!) It's worked very well for us, and Admin knows you've addressed it beforehand.

I did once, but lost over time. It was pretty awesome. We had 40 kids in 6 tight rows on a knee and the other team was running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

When you have 30 total 9-12 you have no choice. Could be like us and our freshmen are our varsity. Only half kidding. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT! Forgive me my LB's coach has me on this new kick of trying to find the positive in everything because I've been a miserable pissed off at the world grouch first year DC for the past 2 weeks. We can't play soon enough.
