Do you allow your teams to participate in Spirit Week/ Homecoming Week activities? Our school does a certain theme each day of the week. Student dress up for each day in the theme. The pervious thought was to stay focused on the game not the outside stuff. Curious what everyone's thoughts are on this.

We didn't let them participate in homecoming court or let them out of practice for activities. Other than that, dressing up and stuff like that, let them have fun as long as it doesn't take them away from football.

So long as they're focused on football when it's football time (practice and game night), why shouldn't they take part in the activities?
Kids should go on as many rides as they can when they're in HS.
If you try to keep them from participating either they'll resent you for it or defy you and do so anyway.
Neither a good outcome.

This is my thought process as well. You only go to HS once.

Our kids are not allowed to miss practice and are not allowed to participate in any physical games. Our school plays a bunch of crazy games - including a relay figure-8 race around the field with the runners wearing a big plastic trash can over the top half of their body. While hilarious to watch I can't believe they do it, every year at least 2 kids end up injured.

One school ran a bonfire and then homecoming dance on Thursday night (7pm-10pm) and we didn't allow the players to participate in the dance. We went with them to the bonfire (the HC had to give a Rah-Rah speech anyway..) and then shipped them home. We didn't need them tired and dragging on game day. It p-ssed more than a few people off but poor planning on the school's part was not going to constitute an emergency on ours.
But, we didn't see any need to keep them from participating in other activities that were within the school day. It really only becomes a distraction if the staff allows it. If we're going to restart practice because they're unfocused, it's probably going to happen during homecoming week.

Several years back our rival school scheduled a big party with a bonfire the night before they were to play us at their homecoming. The HC told the players they couldn't go, a bunch of kids complained, parents got involved and the school overrode him. Two of the captains from the team managed to sabotage the sound system and planted industrial grade smoke bombs (one of the kid's dads was a special effects guy for the studios) in the wood pile. The result was no sound and so much smoke that the fire department arrived and told everybody to beat it. The captains accused our players of doing it which fueled their team's hatred for us even more. They ended up mauling us 63-0. The truth didn't come out for a few weeks later but the damage was done. Those captains were absolutely masterful with their actions/deception. I expect they'll make fine politicians someday.

As long as kids aren’t missing practice it’s not that big of a distraction. Let them have fun. Ours don’t walk the court out because it’s at halftime, but other than that our boys do everything. The distraction thing at homecoming is overrated. High school boys are always distracted anyway. Maybe they’ll play better.

Maybe I'm not clear here....are you saying not let the players participate in dressing up Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.....so they stay focused for Friday?
Maybe you're dealing with different high school kids than I have over the years. Keeping them focused at practice and on Friday afternoon is an accomplishment.
Perhaps we should keep them out of those classes where the teacher is trying to get them to focus on non-football related things as well
LIke the others said: Don't miss practice. Don't be stupid. Don't do physical stuff that could get you hurt. You're not going to miss halftime to be in the court. (One of players was homecoming king this year--but he was in the locker room with his teammates getting ready for the second half.)

I suggest sequestering them at the school to avoid such distractions. I am with the "have fun, they get one shot at HS shennanigans, but don't do anything physically out of the ordinary" Little Anecdote : My senior year, we had a new coach (4th coach in 4 years--but I was lucky, he was the first "professional" coach --the previous two were 'coaching is a hobby/fun thing' guys, and my frosh year I was just a frosh, so not much influence) who ruffled some feathers by not allowing the team members to do the crazy physical field day / powder puff type activities. He took a great deal of grief..UNTIL not one but TWO cheerleaders suffered season ending fractures in unrelated events. As crazy as it sounds, he garnered a lot of respect after that, as it was clear he was a guy who knew what he was doing.

We traditionally did a Mom's night on Wednesday and then dads came into the locker room at halftime on game night. We had traditionally had a noise parade on the night of the game that the players weren't allowed to participate in, so they moved it to Wednesday (no volleyball or soccer games) and added a bonfire. I was okay with the kids participating in it.
What I did catch flack over was not allowing members of the homecoming court to be in the halftime ceremony. I have a mother to this day who would probably shoot me if she knew she could get away with it. A lot of prevention can be done by prepping your activities director about what you need. The problem we had late was an inexperienced person who had a tough time saying no. It made my job much harder.

I was at a school once that held a massive, whole school, relay race the day of the homecoming game. This included a number of eating events, lifting of heavy objects, and various obstacle courses. We would warn our kids against specific events, but outside of that who the heck are we to dictate their lives so much off the field.
This just sounds like more helicoptet coaching to me
