At my age, every morning first thing I do when I get up is check the obituaries to see if I need to shave. Maybe this is what I've been doing wrong.

I have never shaved on a gameday from HS to present time. I don't know why.

I was making an offensive sophomore huddle and got it all put together when a kid peeked around me and asked if we needed a corner to run our plays. Yes we do. They're just over there.

We had the kid who was slated to be our starting fullback and would probably be an all conf player come into our office the first morning of two a days and tell us that going to some football camps all summer he realized he isn't a D1 back so since he can't be the best in football he's going to focus on............Nordic Skiing. He thinks he could be an all american as a jr. Glad we had a kid step up to take that spot.
As for the kids who still wear their gear after they quit, we'll take all the fans we can get. I think its funny when they start talking trash about the football team. Our hockey program kids do this to us alot. Play 2 years and then quit to focus on a hockey team that hasn't had a winning percentage above .300 since the late 80's.

Not being from Texas, I was watching bits and pieces of the espn games last night and saw backs cutting out in the open and on some blitzes. The Monroe? Qb totally took the legs out of a kid fate he pitched the ball on their first td. Does the state go by college rules there for hs football?

Lots of water breaks and have your captains and seniors help with the message of hydrating during the day. Were still a week away but it has crossed our minds too.

Our staff used to do a 12 minute run on the track. Linemen had to get in 5 laps while everyone else had to get 6+. Some exceptions were made of course. Everyone had to do it a few years ago, then it switched to those with less than something like 70% attendence for camps, wt room, 7 on 7 etc. I haven't even heard if we are going to apply this for this summer. We didn't have to last year because everyone showed up for everything.
I realize that we coaches know who has and has not been getting themselves prepared, but I think one thing that the conditioning test does is show the other players who and who hasn't been working out. It reassures those who have been busting their tails by having them finish that task at hand while the others who chose to do other things stick out and it shows the team that they have some work to do if they want to help the team to their fullest ability. I don't know if I'm right, but that my 2 cents on the idea.

Was coaching a freshmen game when one of the opponents got a little hyped up and started talking trash and taking cheap shots. The official on their sideline went over and talked to their coach after he flagged the player for his actions. He came to us and told us that he gave the coach the choice of a 15 yard penalty or he could sit the kid for one play. He sat the kid for one play. It's nice that we had the choice in that one.

Seantrel Henderson (USC) and Michael Floyd (Notre Dame) were tough to get ready for for Cretin Durham Hall. Our HC coached Joe Mauer when he was at CDH. That program has put out some outstanding individuals and has had some real good teams.

we're looking for the same thing. We had the problem that the JV would never practice together because they wre parts being used all over practice. The 10 graders would be on their own most of the time. We are looking at going to a depth chart and using that as a guide for the teams we use during practice.

Our senior class went 16-6 over the last 2 seasons. The have done very well at all levels in our program. Other sports have benefited from them too. Basketball took 3rd in state, 1 state champ, 2 runners up in wrestling, solid in baseball too. They had supportive parents who pushed them and knew that don't settle for being good, it takes lots of hard work to be great. They spent lots of time at practices and in the weight room not to mention the classroom. We knew the group was going to be solid but the parents really helped out by not having them settle for just being good. We don't get groups like this very often. We had a 3-8 season a few years ago which had 6 kids go play anywhere from D3 to D1 football. There is only 1 kid going to a D2 school from this group but they played better together and didn't want to be the one that let their teammates down.

We had a QB named Phil Haig. He could make all the throws at any spot on the field. 3 year starter and by the end he knew what the call was going to be before it was called by the coach. Brewster shunned him at Minnesota so he went to Illinois. Quit after 1 year to play baseball. Had an "issue" and was dismissed from the team. Now pitching down in Fla somewhere. If he got his head out of his arse, he could have done something.

That is what we use as our coaching period. We get the OL and RBs and TE together and show them the D's we are going to see using garbage cans. Roughly 10 minutes here. We look at how we block things and our blitz pick up too. We then get into our stretch lines and thats when each coach can take roll on to see whos late or not there on time. We then go into dynamic stretch for about 7 minutes. We gather together at the end of this to go over our goals for the day and then we break off into indy.

I'd like to be around for the Iowa vs Penn St. Or just hang with the guys up in Boise for a game. They don't always get the best talent up there so they have to level the field with the coaching that they do. I'd like to be on the headset with the O guys as G-Tech as they dismantle a defense.

We have one going D2 to Concordia-St. Paul. He is very excited and his family is proud as are we coaches. He should be a good OT for them. Congrats to all who have guys going to any level. The time and effort you put into those guys is allowing them to continue on. Cheers to all of you.

I went to the same HS as him, Akron-Westfield in Akron, Iowa. I met up with him at Glazier here in Minneapolis a few years ago when he first got on Truman's staff. He was offered a job in the business world he could not pass up he said and is currently not coaching. Too bad, hes a wealth of knowledge.

How long will it take for the kids to see that clapping and getting pumped doesn't win football games? They have to know that if they want success they are going to have to work for it and it's not just about game day. Its the time they spend getting ready.

When our starting LT has anxiety so bad he can't even step onto the practice field. He is an all conference type kid who is a beast and he's been mentally reduced to a kitten. His back-up then goes on a freak out because he doesn't feel that he got enough love from us during the season. So we move the toughest player on the team to that tackle spot just in case and then the other kid freaks out even more when he's already admitted he has no clue whats going on after 12 weeks and a summer of practicing the plays.
When the OC says were going to loose 42-0 and the game is 2 days away.

Leadership..... this year we have a ton of it coming from everyone from our seniors. It doesn't matter if they are an all conference type player or a kid who is just happy to wear the shirt, they are showing great leadership to the younger players and are showing them the right way to do things. next year it will be a lot tougher because there isn't anyone who can lead.

I agree.....get the contact numbers from the office that his parents had to give when they signed him up for school and give them a call ASAP. Let them know what's going on. I had this happen when I was coaching middle school. His kid showed up on game day and I didn't play him and his parents got really mad at me. I told them that he could play if he'd been coming to practice and then the crap hit the fan and all the lies he was telling got him in a whole lot of trouble, (team, parents, and girlfriend he was going to see).

Does anyone fear that with the way technology and information is so easily transfered anymore that kids don't send playbooks out once they have downloaded them? The kids at our school have friends that go to other local private schools and I know some kids wouldn't hesitate to forward them the material. We don't do playbooks at at the soph- varsity level. The freshmen coaches had the kids bring in notebooks to draw things up last year. However after finding many on the floor they were just doodling in them anyway.

I missed two games (Fresh and Varsity) when I found out my father had a stroke. I went to be by his side for support. They had a fill in coach there for me and they played really poorly I guess. However, I would do the same thing again. My father still hasn't recovered from the stroke and its been almost 2 years. The docs don't give him much hope on getting any better. Thats the part which makes me sad. He was once very active with sports and coached. Now he's reduced to sitting in a chair all day and needing someone there to watch over him all day. He does like to hear my football stories though so this time of year gets his spirits up some.

I see some of the "me" thinking end going into the athlete's junior year. I have worked with middle school (weight limits on positions) 9th and 10th grade and assistant on varstiy. 9 and 10 can be tough. Lots of me me me. I'm dealing with that right now with one kid. He's a 10 gradekid who thinks he's d line only. He's shooting himself down the ladder because he doesn't come to our summer practices because he'll play offfense. We had 1 sr class a few years ago that were all me players. They found out what that got them too.....a 0-9 season.

Rumor has it that in early Aug. the price of a PS3 is going to be dropping by a hundred bucks. They are loosing ground to the Wii and they think this will help move more units. Pitty they don't play PS2 games anymore.

I would just like to have a headset on during the Alabama/Utah game. It would have been fun listening to the conversations on both sides in that game.
