This is a specific question ( Thanks to Coachkell )to a response to the previous question. Now i know we all have our own ideas and thought on work and family but i would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts...
This is the question:
(I like to use one from Joe Paterno,) "Lets say we're in the middle of a championship game, and you get a call from home stating there's an emergency, what do you do?"....Joe said if he said anything other than go home, he wouldn't hire them, as they have the wrong mindset.
What would you do or how do you feel about this...

Well, since I live alone if somebody calls me from home I'm dialing 911.

I missed a game two years ago when my wife was in the hospital. Somehow the team managed to play w/o my presence. although we lost 15-0, I don't think me being there would have changed the outcome

When my son was born in 2003 on game day. The birth happened at about 5:00 PM and by 7:00 PM I was at the game. Of course I was back at the hospital by 9:30.
If it were something I was totally unaware of as in emergency, I would be gone in a second.

I missed two games (Fresh and Varsity) when I found out my father had a stroke. I went to be by his side for support. They had a fill in coach there for me and they played really poorly I guess. However, I would do the same thing again. My father still hasn't recovered from the stroke and its been almost 2 years. The docs don't give him much hope on getting any better. Thats the part which makes me sad. He was once very active with sports and coached. Now he's reduced to sitting in a chair all day and needing someone there to watch over him all day. He does like to hear my football stories though so this time of year gets his spirits up some.

When you break it all down football is still just a game. That's a no brainier. I get that call and it's see ya. If the guy I am working for didn't like it then I would quit because he just doesn't get it in the grand scheme of things.

I missed an interview for a HC gig because my wife was in labor, then two days later, we had it resheduled but my wife and baby werent out of the hospital so I skipped that interview....glad I did.
at a game once, wife called to tell me my son "wasnt able to walk" anymore...wouldnt put weight on his legs, there was under 2 minutes left in a game that was 38-36...I left the game in the hands of my assistants to be with my wife and child. turned out my son had fractured his leg.
family first, theres always another game, you got one family.

Just for the record i feel much the same way, Nothing is more important to me than family,.. I would never hold it against any of my coaches or players also...
i just interviewed a coach and his answer to that question was well depends on the emergency, i mean they could take an ambulance to the hospital and i could meet them there after the game.............

those are tough questions, because a guy interviewing is probably going to try and guess what you want to hear...they should be honest and say "family first".
but some guys, particulary the really hungry ones, will lie like crazy lol.

How are you getting a phone call during the game?
The only way I could get a "call" during a game is for someone else at the stadium - spectator, administrator, etc. - to get a call then come to me directly with that information. Who carries a cell phone with them on the sidelines? Why? and... under what circumstances would you answer it anyway?
now, if you are expecting a situation (due to give birth; family member in critical condition/ICU; ) that may be different. But on a normal day, who carries their cell phone onto the field? While mine is in my bag in the locker room/field house, it is not on my person.

Huey, you must be old as dirt! My QB carries an I-Phone and I just text him the plays. You've got to get with the program you geezer Coach Orr, I agree with you on your assessment that the person was probably just trying to read the questioner and give them the answer they wanted to hear. But then I thought about that idea for a bit and it became pretty clear that the question drums up another issue; do you want a brown noser, or do you want somebody who will tell you something that you might not want to hear?

I dont use my phone during a game, but it still never leaves my pocket just out of habit. I feel naked if it isnt in my pocket. And it will actually come in handy this year with the new HS rule about being out on the field at the 3 minute halftime warm up period. Ill be using it to set an alarm or check time so we dont get the 15 yard penalty cuz we took too long to come out after halftime
