We had a kid yesterday come up to us coaches right after practice and told me he has decided to retire from football. Is there something wrong with me when I had to fight back laughing because a sophomore in high school tells me he is retiring from football?

If you retire from something doesn't that mean you have had a cerrer in it at one point?

A couple of years ago we had a freshman who said his goal was to play college ball. Six weeks later he told us he was "resigning" from football. He dropped out of school last spring.

We had a kid last week tell us he was quitting but was planning on playing again next year. When we asked him why he was quitting if he was planning to play next year he looked at us and said, "This way I can get better and start next year." How do you get better at something without doing it?

My dad was a coach and he would always tell his kids that it was past the date to where they could quit. I would say that 99% of them would stay out.

Had a kid quit one time due to "lack of playing time". He was starting at LB and on most special teams. Really he thought he was some kind of amazing receiver even though he couldn't catch and he quit because he wasn't a starter there

"Coach, this summer at cheerleading camp I made All-American. I think I have a chance at getting a college cheerleading scholarship. I want to take a year off from football and concentrate on cheerleading. I plan on playing football again though my senior year."
His parents were mad at me when I told him he wouldn't be bumping anyone out of their starting spot if/when he decided to come back.

When I was in college we had a kid put all his pads and helmet and everything in his locker real nice and neat. On top of his things he put a note saying that he was sorry he was leaving us and signed the sheet with a professional looking signature and even put his number by the signature. What a joke.

When I was in college my roommate in camp one year was an older guy who had gotten out of the Army and wanted to play football. Our practice field was on a little hill overlooking the stadium and field house, about a half-mile away. The first practice we were required to jog two laps around the practice field to start practice. As we were completing the second lap, I noticed my roommate reaching the last turn a few yards ahead of me. He didn't turn left, though, toward the field. He turned right toward the field house and kept going. When I got back to the room after practice his stuff was gone. I never saw him again.

Had one earlier this year say he had to "work." -- Between double sessions?! That always seems to be the go to excuse here. When asked what his job was he was speechless.
Had another tell me his Aunt had cancer and was dieing and he had to take care of her. I talked to him and told him family needs to be first, but if it's a football thing to just tell the truth. He said he loved football but had to take care of his aunt. A week later I see him tooting on some instrument in the marching band.

This isn't funny but I think it's symptomatic.
Had a kid come in and quit Monday. Said it was over lack of playing time (hadn't gotten in much first three games).
Nice kid, came to all summer stuff, but he's 5-7, 160 Guard who couldn't block me (I'm 56). I did try to talk him out of it but couldn't promise him something I might not be able to deliver.
He's sniffling, tearing and choking up while he's talking to me, so I could tell football means something to him.
Tuesday was deadline for Pay to Play fee. I just wonder if Mom or Dad told him they weren't anteing up if he wasn't getting on field more.
