Minnesota's recruiting deficiencies or not, there has to be more to it. There are plenty of FCS schools that get D1 guys--whether transfers or overlooked recruits--that don't win a title, let alone five in a row...

Our HC plays only the instrumental versions of songs at practice so we don't have to worry about inappropriate lyrics. I can't stand rap/hip-hop so he has to set the play list where every fifth song or so is hard rock or heavy metal so his OL coach (me) can maintain some sanity!

There's two trends going on that, at least I think, explain why the cowboy collars and such have disappeared. I've noticed over the last two school years that for whatever reason football players are trying to get away with wearing the least amount of gear/equipment as possible whereas basketball players are trying to get away with wearing the most amount of gear/equipment possible.

It's also a rule of our district to where all games get uploaded to a shared library or whatever it's called, on Hudl. This is good because of the "bad film" problem but it can also be good if the team you are preparing for has played teams immediately before you that have a totally different style. For example, one season our opponents almost always played a single wing school the week before they played us. So, it was good to have other looks more comparable to us on film.

In Iowa, I think everyone has to have hudl. Someone can correct me on that if not. Our film exchanges are very good with the exception of one school I can almost always count on for a missing special teams play.

I'm not sure it's a good idea for any of us to call parents "fools." Arian is making a ton of money and his contract isn't exactly in jeopardy if he offends a soccer mom, but for us it can be a bit different. I actually had this same thought before I shared the article on my Facebook earlier. However, given the negative criticism football is taking lately, I also feel it's time to fight back a little bit.

Yea I just saw them explain it on NFL network. I was confused because in the clip they were showing earlier they had a tackle cutting a dlineman who wasn't engaged moral of the story - NFL network is not a good place to go for anything about football - unless you want to hear the latest player drama Their female lineup is pretty outstanding. They have that going for them!

I think I saw the same NFL Network clips you are talking about and it threw me for a loop too. They made it seem like all blocking below the waist on the line of scrimmage (aka cuttting) is now illegal, but I don't think that's the case.

We film every freshmen game as we do freshmen/varsity double headers almost every Friday. So, the guy who volunteers to do our varsity film just simply does both games. Our HC will film every JV home game and road games if they are close enough for him to get to after the varsity's Monday practice. We use them as evaluation tools for in-season just as filming varsity games would do; I'm not sure how much we are looking to the future though when we evaluate them.
Also, it's fairly common for our JV to be playing a different opponent on Mondays than our varsity did on Friday, so unless we're pretty confident we'll see the same type of defense or offense, we don't really watch the film with our players. For me, it's more about identifying what we need to work on in practice.

I will add to that in re-reading some of your posts, your community seems a little batty when it comes to contacting coaches. Counting individual communities as part of co-op programs, I've coached for and/or lived in about ten different communities and I've never had anyone abuse the privilege of having my contact information or use the information inappropriately.

I TOTALLY agree with your message, carookie. I just think your relating it to never ever giving out a phone number is way overthinking it. But, as we've said many times, to each his own.

I agree that one of the simplest things you can do is go to other games and encourage them to go out for other sports. I didn't realize the power of this until just a few years ago. I almost always go to basketball games anyway as I love that sport almost as much as football. At my current coaching job, I went to the first 10 or so basketball games of the season, home and away, and then there was a Tuesday night game that simply too far for me to go to on a school night. I didn't think anything of it until the next day at school when five or six kids asked me where I was!

A coach actually said this, but too funny not to share. Our freshmen football team went 1-7 this year and were either 0-4 or 0-5 at the time of this exchange. We have two freshmen players whose names are Godd Praonus and Jesus Nuno. I get a text from the freshmen coach one day saying, "I really am a horrible coach. I have God and Jesus on my team and I still can't win a game!"

I guess maybe it's fairly more common than I thought. It didn't occur to me that maybe some districts, conferences, and states would require maxpreps since it's set-up to keep track of information.

Yeah, the tackles get crazy sometimes! On the program I linked in my last post, we are only allowed to enter two players per tackle at most. Either one player gets a solo or two players get an assist. And, I think you have to enter a total number of plays, so therefore there is a maximum number of tackles that can be entered team-wide. I think the state mandated site is somewhat beneficial for scouting...but the only people who seemingly get upset when the site is down are fans!

The "Do any other states" thread got me thinking about a question I've been meaning to post for a while: do any other states besides Iowa have a website to report stats to? We have www.quikstatsiowa.com and it's actually mandated by our association that we report stats by the end of Weeks 3, 6, and 9 plus immediately after any playoff games. Most just simply update every week, of course. Just curious if anyone else has this?

I always find it funny how different things are depending on where you coach (area and size of school). Where I am, all of our parents think their son should start as a freshman and if they don't, the coach is an idiot. I was thinking the same thing, but at least at our school, they demonstrate "patience" by waiting until sophomore year before ranting about playing time...

Very rough estimate on these times, but I check the General Board and Career Board almost hourly, the general offense, pass protection, and run game threads at least once a day, and then the general defense and special teams once every couple days or so. If I'm in any other board, it's only because the most recently updated topic catches my attention for some reason. For example, I very rarely go to the Recruiting board, but just a couple days ago the most recent post was in the Saban thread and the title of it caught my eye.

If I'm ever talking to a HC about a job--I've only had one "formal" interview for an assistant job--I basically talk about my experience, what my roles and responsibilities were with the programs, and basically say that if you find this experience valuable and useful, I'm willing to do whatever you want. Let's face it: if I was a "savior" I probably wouldn't be needing to apply and interview for assistant jobs!

We have our players turn in game jerseys after every game and they get washed at the school. All other laundry is up to them.

This isn't something I would ever see the need for in any of the programs I have been with and certainly not if it's any kind of fulltime position. If it is something a retired coach/teacher could do for a typical assistants stipend...maybe...

I agree most seem to be going away from two-a-days and I think a lot of it due to legislation too. It's virtually impossible to have true two-a-days with the rules in place in Iowa.

As an assistant, I haven't really had this chance. The few jobs I've left, the "rumor mill" informed the players of what was going on before I had a chance to! When asked, I just gave an honest answer as best I could. What I mean by that is at one school, there were administrative issues I didn't want to get into with players, but for the most part, I was still fairly honest.

And when my hometown boy and two time opponent Peyton manning has bad body language.... And when NFL poster boy Tom Brady has Bad Body Language? I don't see either of those two guys with bad body language on the Actual field. And after every drive for an entire game. I didn't see him trying to motivate his teammates at all. That last drive CAM shut it down. I won't even get into the fumble. I'm a as big a Tom Brady fan as anyone...but if you don't see him demonstrate bad body language on the field, you don't watch very closely...

Two blocks...and I absolutely love it! I've had a 50-minute commute before and it taught me that about 30 mins was my limit. And, to go with what blb said, it would have to be a heck of a job for me to be willing to drive that far.

I say a simple "good game" to both players and coaches going through the line. I may add a "Hey, make sure you get a win next week!" if they are playing a team I sincerely want them to beat. Nothing more than that, though.

Iowa just redrew our district maps as well. For us personally, two hours is the longest and we actually had to make that same drive for a non-district game four years ago. Other than that, there is one more trip that will be around 90 minutes and then the other five schools are all within an hour.

If it was me, I would be more than a little bit worried IF other people are chosen to be interviewed. The reason I say this is because I've seen before where schools have had to post jobs as "open" because the person holding the coaching position wasn't a teacher in the district. But, the only person who "interviewed" for the job was the person who currently held it and I'm not even sure it was an actual interview.
