Taking a job closer to home how to tell kids you're going to leave?

Tell them you enjoyed the time, appreciate their efforts and allowing you to coach them but you have an opportunity to move back home that may not come up again.

I just have a meeting and tell them. " I wont be your coach going into next season- I am taking a job that is better for my family"

HC or Assistant?
Assistant just meet with you position kids and tell them the truth. Make sure they know they can call you if they need you, and that the new guy will do a great job etc.
HC makes it a little tougher. Talk to them about change in life and the way you handle it defines who you are as a man.
1. Roll with it and make it BETTER. Buy in even more to the next guy and build their program/legacy 2. Find the negative and attach to a person. This PROGRAM is about more than 1 person (even you) always has been, always will be.

There isn't an easy way. Had to do that a couple years ago. Most of the understood but it's not easy as you would expect. Let them know why you're leaving and they'll fully understand (I think) once they get older and mature.

Be straight forward. Don't beat around the bush- family move/family decision. Don't bash anyone. Remind them that they'll be ok. Wish them the best of luck and keep the door open to help them if they need it.

As an assistant, I haven't really had this chance. The few jobs I've left, the "rumor mill" informed the players of what was going on before I had a chance to! When asked, I just gave an honest answer as best I could. What I mean by that is at one school, there were administrative issues I didn't want to get into with players, but for the most part, I was still fairly honest.

I left a job (baseball). I was the 3rd HC in 3 years. Kids won 23 games (23-7). Got the job I'm currently at the day we lost in the playoffs.
Brought them in the next day. Told them all the stuff on the board. Good for me...good for family. Thank you for your efforts, etc. Left the program in a good place. Everyone returning the next year.
The year after I leave they win the championship. Kind of bummed me out for a second. Got messages from some parents saying the team wouldn't have been in the finals if I wasn't their coach the year before.
I can write a book about that season.
Bottomline...it really isn't that hard to say goodbye...just do it professionally.

Probably not the way I did as I was being fired from one of my previous stops.
Called a meeting and told the kids this- For those of you that supported me and my staff's efforts with what we were trying to do I sincerely thank you and wish you nothing but the best unless I play against you in the future (laugh). For those of you who went out of your way to make this happen, along with your families, I hope you all get what you deserve in life and if I ever have a chance to score 100 points on you or this school in a football game, I will call all 3 timeouts to do so.
And then I walked out.

And then I walked out. that. is. funny as an assistant I always thought it was suspect to have a big meeting to let kids know that you are leaving. The HC has to do this when it's him, you don't, just go. There might be a few kids that you want to text or talk to and let them know because you don't want them to hear it from the grapevine but other than that don't take yourself too seriously. Nothing is more cringe worthy than the DL coach who is leaving talking to the whole team like "sometimes as a man...u gotta make tough decisions bro...life will do that you bro..and you just, like, gotta, do what's best for you man...I really enjoyed making men out of you..but sometimes in life....." while all the kids are looking at each other like "is this over soon so we can go to lunch?"

Kind of like bringing flowers to a person's office and begging just to talk after they break it off with you for being to clingy. You aren't a stage 5 clinger are you Larrymoe?

Funny stuff...
I would just say, keep it short and sweet. During time time you're talking, they're thinking about your possible replacements anyway.

I only held the meeting to get people to quit asking me questions about what was happening. At that point I just wanted to live out my next two months as quietly and quickly as possible.

TELL THE TRUTH....Last HC I worked for went through the end of season meetings with the kids sold them a line of BS about what it would take to get over the hump. The guy was all in then he has his end of season evaluation didn't like what he heard and up and quit....via email....hahaha. Met with kids told him needed to spend more time with family. A week later took another assistant coaching position. People want to lynch him now.... just tell the truth.

Quickly and honestly. Kids get it. I did it as an assistant at one stop but I was the only teacher in the building so I was the guy running most of our day to day operations. I met with my group, let them know I had a different opportunity I wanted to pursue. They were fine. I still stay in touch with a few who have since graduated.

I worked for a guy who did this. Sold EVERYBODY on a load of crap, including myself. I moved 900 miles away to work for him and then within 4 months he left. Spend a year at the school and bailed. We went 10-4 the next year but he just won his second straight state title. Loyalty is a fickle creature for sure.
