Reading the "what have you gotten rid of" thread as well as in conversation with other coaches it seems as though there is a growing number of coaches doing away with traditional 2 a days. Last year we went 5 hours with an hour break in the middle (two 2.5hr practices). In typical off season eval I'm looking at everything and that is one of the areas I am wondering if we can cut back on but I had some questions about it.
How long are you practicing if you aren't doing 2 a days? What are some of the things you found on the positive end to going away from 2 a days? Negatives/Roadblocks?
Have any of you that went away from the 2 a days decided to go back to them and why?

How many of these 5 hour (6 hours really) practices did you have?

We don't do 2-a-Days for a couple of reasons. We do 7v7 the entire summer, we have at least 1 day a week during summer for installs and what not.
But the big thing is the first day allowed for practice is also teachers' 1st day of school, and we're in meetings from 8-4 leaving no room for 2 a days.
Also the first 3 days of practice are in helmet and shorts. Not much left to do that would justify 2 practices a day. (We are allowed to be in helmets all summer)

I haven't been part of a 2-a-day in 17 years. For the last 17 we have done as few as 3 hours and as many as 5 hours. We did 5 when I was younger and then went to 4 when I realized 5 wasn't helping. We have done 3 hours for the last two years because the state limited our time.
I like our format but all of our coaches need to be very organized and prepared.

I agree most seem to be going away from two-a-days and I think a lot of it due to legislation too. It's virtually impossible to have true two-a-days with the rules in place in Iowa.

What I see is a lot of schools having one long evening practice because of the number of non-faculty coaches who work days.
Personally I modified our Two-a-Days (9-11 AM, 1-3 PM) but did not do away with them completely.

I haven't been a part of 2 a days since 2008. It happened when I moved to Kentucky and at that time the schools were moving their schedules to a more balanced type of thing. We started school when you were allowed to begin the traditional 2 a day. But I also came into a staff who were air raid guys and did things short and simple and said they wouldn't do them anyway because there was no need for that much time. I thought it was great. Two a days may have been this traditional thing but it was sure a drag of a day as a player and even as a coach. When I came back to Indiana, schools had moved to the balanced calendar by then and again there was no room in there to be able to legally hold 2 a days. Now, as HC, we take the first 4 days we are allowed to practice and go for 2 hours and 45 minutes but even then that extra time is largely slotted for special teams install. We typically have a 2 hour practice and it'll be even shorter by the end of the season. Taking a page out of the air raid book, we practice no huddle fast and efficient. There really isn't a need for 2 a days or super long practices with the way we do things. Not to mention the summer stuff where you get plenty of time then too. By the time we hit practice all of our base O and D stuff is in. I just don't see the need for 2 a days now.

Our first 2 days of August practice are mandated conditioning with helmets and footballs only, so we don't double-day then. I schedule W-Th-F as double-days but it's more brain work and skill/technique development than lining up and hitting. Per state law (Cali) we're only allowed 2 days of full-contact hitting per week (M-Sun), and only 90 minutes per session when we do hit. So we have to plan what we are doing when.
Back when I was playing double-days were required because the earth was still forming and we were too busy dodging meteors and volcanoes to do any working out over the summer. DD's were how we got back into shape, but today we are running/working out pretty much all summer so it's not that big of an issue.

We've done 2 a days for the first 3 practices of the year before we are allowed in any pads. The 3 morning practices are no equipment, special teams (install, circuits), brief team O, and conditioning. About 50 min
Afternoon practice ==> Indy O/ Team O/ Indy D/ Team D. About 2 hours.
Good for our ST

We do 3.5 hour practices instead of two-a-days. 90 minutes of O, break, then 90 minutes of D. Works out well for us.

Depends on where you are and what your situation is.
In our state we can only work with four players at a time in Off-Season unless it's 7-on-7 (maximum of seven days) or camp (maximum ten days).
We do not have Spring Practice.
From first day of practice to first game is 15-16 days not counting Sundays.
Between Conditioning, Basketball, Baseball, Wrestling, work, Drivers' Ed, vacations, etc. many schools may find it difficult to get enough done in June-July to make something resembling Two-a-Days unnecessary.

What about rules about having so many practices before you can play?
We have a 10 practices rule - 2 a days will allow for kids to get those in before scrimmage and game 1...
Will be interesting...

Seniors and Juniors returning and filling out the depth chart and not too many new things to learn= two a days seems less important. It should all be review.
with a new program and a bunch of new things to get installed, a new staff and a bunch of unknown and untrained players= two a days seems like a very important thing.

We practice for the first two weeks from 7:30 to around noon. Average is 2 hours for offense, 2 for defense, 30 minutes for special teams and conditioning. It allows the players to have the rest of their day and they also avoid the hottest part of the summer days.

If you had the same set up we do, with far more limitations you guys have, would you still not have doubles?

We do two a days for the first week of practice. Heck at our last school just two years ago we would go away to a camp ground and stay the week. We don't platoon so nice to have the first week where we get full practices of each side once a day, we only do 4 days of two a days and walk thru day before our first scrimmage. This year with a big change in our state looks like we get one week of practice instead of two before our first game so seems more important to have the two days now to get it all done.

I think the only reason we still do 2-a-days is because we start a whole week and a half after everybody else. We generally have our scrimmage a week and a half after we start. So in order for us to be ready to scrimmage we still do the 2 a day thing.
We are a boarding school and are regulated by the office as to when we are allowed to have the boys back on campus. Also we dont have a summer program because, again, we are a boarding school and the kids leave for the summer. Also being a military school, we dont have a spring because this is parade and military review time.

I was more mature/insightful than my peers, they didnt like doubles because it was "hard" i didnt like it because i saw that practice A and practice B were usually either -just about the same or -A = Conditioning, B = practice the days where it was just about the same it was like... "why would we be doing these drills or plays any better a couple hours later?" the days where morning was conditioning, afternoon was practice it was like... "this is a crappy practice because everyone is so sore/tired from the morning" but i admit the level of coaching i experienced was just slightly greater than friday night tykes soooooo, to each their own if you feel it is right for you and you need it to win week 1, do it i know we do not need to do it week 1 to win in 2016 so i will not i just disagree with the idea that you should do 2 a days because "thats what football teams are SPOSED to do"

We do 2-a days. We might not if:
1. We fully platooned and/or 2. Travel was an issue.
Neither is the case for us. Almost all of guys at least practice both ways and the furthest a kid has to travel is four miles.

We go from 8:30-11:30. The kids get the afternoon and evening free. It's been great and I think we get a few more kids playing because of it. We started it @ 5 years ago.

In SC they regulate 2 a days to the point that you hardly get to do it even if you want to. 1st 5 days you are limited to 3 hours of practice, 1 a day. Days 6-14 you can alternate 3 hour days and 5 hour days every other day. On the 5 hour days practices must be separated by 2 hours of continuous rest. Weights do not count as rest. During rest you are permitted to do chalk talk and non-padded, indoor, air conditioned walk throughs. When you are planning out your calendar it usually works out so that you only get 2 to 4 opportunities for a double day. Factoring in Sunday's off and scrimmages/jamborees (we get 5 pre-season contests) and then teacher work days starting up. There really aren't many opportunities to have a double day and stay in compliance. Like others have said, we have spring practice and open season all summer so it isn't a big deal. Heck, we even have opens season from March through all the way to the season.

I think you will find the answers thoughts given in this thread will have a pretty strong correlation to the level of "football" work performed in the summer. Schools that do a lot of football have no need for two a days (having read some of the threads here, it seems some coaches are basically coaching football from late June-November)
I also think there are some administrative issues that play into the decision. One person brought of the issue of practices before a game. For paperwork reasons, running doubles (or the one long practice with a break) might be beneficial to fulfill requirements.

We get 10 camp days in the summer with helmets so we do get a lot of install done those days. We still do 2 a days but generally only get 7 or so before the teachers start work days. We try to keep each practice short with some chalk talk during the break. This year we had a ton of young guys so it sucked because it was definitely like cramming. I might push to see if we can get to 1:45 a practice. With a break we could be done by noon.
The past few years have been a struggle because of remodeling at the school so we had to travel and/or the places we would have the kids rest were not as available. Our facility should be ready to go August 1 and we should be able be on campus and put the kids in the cafeteria again. Such a time saver.

I guess in Arkansas it's similar to SC. Fall camp starts 2 weeks before school officially begins. We are only allowed 3 hrs of on field practice a day the entire 2 weeks. 1st week we can't have 2 a days at all and we can't go full pads until the 2nd.
In the 2nd week you can have 2 practices but on non consecutive days and full pads are limited. I don't know of any coach that has 2 a days around here and have never coached for one, but our athletics association makes it difficult if you want to.

Haven't done 2 a days in 10 years and haven't missed them one bit.
Lost my first 2 home openers in my HFC coaching career after doing 2 a days leading up to it and felt like my kids looked tired and unexcited. Scrapped 2 a days and won the next 4 home openers in a row (was the under dog in 2 of them).
That was enough incentive for me. We run the flex bone offense and I feel like in that system if you NEED 2 a days you are probably doing too much.

Yes. Typically teams have a scrimmage at the end of week 1. Then 2 scrimmages in week 2. Then 2 jamborees in week 3. Wow that's insane. I can't believe in this age of nerfing everything that they allow this to happen, that's a ton of contact in a short amount of time. How do you even get anything done those weeks? Seems like there is no recovery time or time to practice at all if you have two a week. Just amazes me to see that.
