Whatever happened to neck protection equipment?

A few years ago the kids found a bunch of them in the office and all of the sudden we had like 30 of them out at practice. After about 3 days they were all off again. But we didn't have anybody wear one last year that I can recall.

I'm curious if there have been studies done on the effectiveness of this equipment? Logically, they do seem to restrict movement of the head and neck which in theory would potentially create less movement of the head and brain for certain types of collisions.. Obviously direct contact to the helmet from another helmet would have the same amount of force but I have seen numerous head injuries occur from whiplash type movement of the head when collision has occurred at other parts of the body. With that stated, my guess is due to the restriction of movement and our day and age of lots of spread football and high emphasis on the pass game the head mobility and vision is a critical factor for WR/QB and coverage players, this makes this type of equipment less vogue at all levels of football.

I'm glad someone else said it because I bring this up every year. Nothing makes a medium sized LB look like a monster quite like a jersey over a cowboy collar.

There's two trends going on that, at least I think, explain why the cowboy collars and such have disappeared. I've noticed over the last two school years that for whatever reason football players are trying to get away with wearing the least amount of gear/equipment as possible whereas basketball players are trying to get away with wearing the most amount of gear/equipment possible.

They were eliminated by the spread offense.

Cox had that Frankenpad that looked like something Tim Duncan banked jumpers off of.

We always looked for the kid on the other team w/ a neck roll and targeted his @$$ all game. We knew the neck roll kid was the biggest pu$$y on the field. Today "neck roll kid" has turned into "wristbands & fancy socks" kid.

Only have had one kid wear it and he was an absolute monster. Kid was 5'5" on a good day and hit you with every pound of weight on his frame.

Boom.

This thread gave me some good laughs. I thought they looked badass when I was a HS freshman. Finally got a cowboy collar, and couldn't bow my neck and look up in my stance. It lasted about 30 minutes, haha. Always felt like the bigger ones were useless and even detrimental, but that's just me.
