The quintessential DC. Loved his insights on football technique, scheme, or just complaining about things we all think about but have never put into words. That's the profession we have unfortunately. Guys who have been there and done it all being blamed for things by guys with less credibility than guts, ZERO.

I don't like email or text at ALL. They need to be able to speak to me in their own voice. A big part of that is for when they get older and need to face the music. Too many kids nowadays live in a world where they can't communicate unless it's impersonal. I don't like it. What if home sick? That's why phone calls are fine. Just needs to be them speaking to me directly.

Either by phone call or in person. We don't get bothered too much so long as they communicate what's going on. The issue with them is owning up to missing. They'll say they forgot or say they told so and so to tell us because they don't want to stand there and take heat for whatever their excuse is. There's been plenty of them who don't end up missing after we talk to them. But, the punishment is always far worse for missing without communicating. Typically a substantial loss of playing time.

I was a young coach (I definitely see the theme) and wanted to rush down to the field to bestow some knowledge on the DC that I had gleaned from being up in the stands with the rest of the peanut gallery. I think I remember using the phrase "Coach NEEDS to know this." Oh my god, I can barely get through this story with how embarrassing that mindset is. I get down to the track and decide instead of running all the way to the gate, I'm going to be a bada$$ and jump the fence. I was still one year removed from playing and in good shape. Would've been a great idea ... if the exact spot I chose wasn't a gate that was closed and I didn't notice because I was too busy being self important. I hopped one leg up over and the whole gate swung open and dropped me on the back of my head. HC looks over and says "Biggest hit of the night right there." I turned right around and went home. NOT TO MY CAR. Home.

Was talking to a former player about what I look for in an assistant. This is what I text him.
Someone who understands the role we play in kids' lives. Someone who looks for opportunities to build kids up. Someone who breaks complex concepts into teachable components. Someone who exemplifies what we want our kids to become and doesn't shy away from being honest with them. Someone who believes in my vision of what our defense should be like and does everything in his power to help make that vision a reality. That's what a real coach looks like.

Just be the very best coaches you can to the kids and your credibility will win out over his influence. Kids who believe in you won't get shaken by him. If he's being a problem though, leave the kid out of it. He's just a kid trying to have fun playing football. Tell admin to watch out for him and if he gets out of hand, have him escorted out of the stands. I've only had it that bad once, but it was dealt with. The kid felt embarrassed as all hell and the other kids immediately lost respect for the guy, if he had any at all. Provide an atmosphere of positive influence that trumps his.

We added a thirty minute stretch and rehab session to Monday. It's good for the kids. They get to ice up and get stuff loose. Our WR coach has a background in that stuff so he helps a ton. Need it since we're a Power team now. Cut back on some on the field stuff that day.

Not trying to help as it seems everybody else has this thing covered. But, make sure you have "team players" on your staff because if I've been a varsity WR coach for who knows how long and somebody said "Time to restructure! Go coach freshmen!" That staff may not have 2 of every position for long. I don't know the guys, just been around and seen stuff like that not fly.

Know when enough is enough football wise and put it completely aside for a little bit every weekend to spend time with your family. Not really a tip to "steal time" so much as knowing when "stealing time to get football stuff done" is not getting a positive return on investment.

I use Blogspot. Haven't in some time, think I need to get back on that. But, it's pretty good for just a coach to pass some time. Don't commit to a monthly payment unless you're committed to updating it all the time.

Best kid plays so long as he's reliable. All things being equal, I always go with younger guys if older guys aren't better.

Twitter. Many good coaches tweeting out good info. Many different hashtag chat sessions where knowledge changes hands. And, it's all under 140 characters.

I always liked the idea of starting practices with some full tilt competition to get them accustomed to coming out firing.

Did you leave the first string in? If not, backups deserve to score too. Not your fault if they can't stop the third string receiver from catching a slant from the third string QB and going 80 yards after catch for a TD. If they looked at themselves instead of at the actions of others, they may be able to stop you once in a while. If you're throwing fades to the starters, that's not cool.

Also, make sure what you're changing isn't a ton of work for everyone but you. I love when young assistants come up with all these ways to track weights, grades, fundraise, etc. and it's all stuff I have the honor of doing on my own. You want something done? Let me know how you're going to get it done.

You can either change what you do or change who you are. If it's the latter, they can only change if they are the ones who want to like jrk5150 talked about. If it's a matter of changing what you do, is it because it's too much work for him or is it because he doesn't think it worked well after the first week? If he's a creature of habit, then that is a character thing and won't change without him willingly accepting it and working to change it.

Listened to my gut and not jump at that first varsity job with an incompetent head coach just to say I was a varsity coach. I would've been better served finding a great program in the area and volunteering as a freshman assistant. Oh well. Live and learn. I think I read on here, "More careers are decided on the jobs you don't take than the ones you do."

We were Triple Option. Had the QB, RB work the mesh point of all our option plays. OL would just block the front. Equivalent of running plays on scout interior players with line and backs.

I don't know many guys who looked busy to look as if they were working. I know MANY guys who didn't do well with pressure and would get overwhelmed by coaching in general. If you had to ask them to improvise at all, it went straight out the window. "Hey, Kevin's running late so just take the RBs with you and have them run mesh while the OL works the blocking scheme." "Huh? I don't know their jobs! I can't do that! Whyyyy?!"
