season goes on?
I recently heard a very successful coach say that they only spend about 1 hour and 15 minutes on the field as they get deeper into the season. They dedicate more time to film and weights. Does anyone else do this? Thoughts on pros and cons?

Two weeks ago we cut down Wednesday to 90 min. Best thing we did. We always cut down. Tuesday's are still full right now. But pretty soon.....we are entering week five of the season we will cut Tuesday down too. We will spend more time on video and weights.

We added a thirty minute stretch and rehab session to Monday. It's good for the kids. They get to ice up and get stuff loose. Our WR coach has a background in that stuff so he helps a ton. Need it since we're a Power team now. Cut back on some on the field stuff that day.

I've read in the past about a lot of people who cut down on indy time throughout the season; this seems crazy to me. We are what we repeatedly do, and if you cut back on indy time during the season then your individual fundamentals will begin to wane. We definitely advance technique wise throughout the year (in spring we work on step 1, summer step 1 to 2, etc.) but by the season we are doing the complete drill at its highest form.
I don't really believe in cutting back on anything, assuming you are efficient to begin with. If you plan out your practices correctly, then you can maintain a steady level without burn out or being forced to cutback.

I never cut practice time down Monday-Wednesday unless it was due to weather.
I felt our practice schedule was the best way to prepare team for the contest, so why cut back?
And where - Individual, Kicking Game, Team? Not willing to short any of those areas.
As season wore on I did cut time down on Thursday simply because it didn't take as long to practice Pre-Game Routine or situations after we had done them for several weeks.

We have consistently cut to 1:15 on the field the 2nd half of the season the last 4 years. We do not cut indy. We cut team snaps back.

Last thing I would do is cut down indy or fundamentals.
Mon- Indy O and Indy D + turnover circuit Tues- Indy D + tackling circuit Wed- Indy O + blocking circuit
^ most of those circuits are super light on actual full speed contact. Maybe 2 reps / kid but a lot of reps of easy contact working small things like hips, hand placement, head placement
My indies are easy contact. Shields, bags, CQB, quick whistle

We cut down on indy. This goes against everything i used to do and I know that probably most guys will disagree with me, but we are doing more team.
We have passed the ball on 80% of all downs this year and I want my QB making those throws under pressure with real coverage.
We coach the hell out of our kids in team. They still have indy. It just isn't 30-40 minutes anymore.

This reminds me a conversation a reporter had with Nick Saban. IIRC, I think it was before the 2009 SECCG against Tebow and Florida.
Paraphrasing...
Reporter: "Coach, with such a big game coming up, are you doing anything special at practice?"
Saban: "If we knew a better way to practice we would have been doing it all year."

I agree with the not cutting it crowd. I can't see getting it done in any less time. We have a period clock. We stick to it and the practice schedule strictly. Practice goes by pretty fast.

I think as the season goes on you can get all your normal work done in less time due to efficiency.
Your Indy time probably doesn't include new teaching and kids know the routine so what used to take 10 minutes can get done in 8.
That way you are naturally cutting 1-2 minutes off of each practice segment and your practice can get done 15-20 minutes faster.
In some areas cooler weather also increases pace of practice and allows for less water time.

We never cut our time, If we efficient that day then we'll end earlier. If not, then we go the distance.

You know its funny, I've actually coached with guys who coach to a clock (opposite of what you do). Basically practice is 3 hours long, so if we get things done efficiently and there is time left over then they add things- restart the script from team at the beginning, give an extra long speech (or ask kids to contribute to the speech), heck I've even been in film sessions that ended too soon for its own good and led to coaches showing highlights from when they played. Practice schedules should be a maximum length, not minimum.

Yea this is how we do things, if we get a jump on the day get moving and can stay moving and are more efficient then we get done earlier, if we drag A** like yesterday we go the distance and stay until we get done. I believe it was Urban Meyer that said we are going to get 2 1/2 good hours of practice if takes 3 hours to get it in then thats how long we will be out here. Thats kind of the way we approach it. Most of the time our guys get on the field and we get stuff done, but some days every so often practice is slow and there is not a whole lot you can do about it. What are you gonna do punish them do up downs and extra sprints or whatever you do which is just going to take longer? Now if slow practice and inefficiency is an epidemic then you have to figure out a way to get it to be up tempo.

Rather than cut time, we used to cut down the number of days we were in full gear as the year went on (basically switching from full to shells). It wasn't a drastic change, but with our kids it was the mental aspect of "appearing" like we were cutting back on their wear and tear.
Other things we'll do to save some energy is revisit the fundamentals of our Special Teams (I'm the STC, and many of our starters have to contribute on Special Teams). We will do more circuit work, get offs, and alternative kicks/situational stuff rather than just lining up and running down the field on coverage. I find that helps us from getting too sloppy on the kicking game at this point in the season. It is still our usual 15-20 minutes of work but less coverage and more coaching at the point of attack.

I think a lot depends on the needs of your team. For example, this week we're playing a double wing team and we haven't seen a lot of double wing type concepts all season so we're going to need to be on the field longer. However, the week after we're playing a spread zone readish type team and that's what our offense does and that's the identity of the majority of our opponents to this point so we probably won't be on the field as much.

Right now we are down to 5 in favor of adding 15 minutes of group to get RBs putting in some work with the line. We weren't running group before because we throw so much, but there is going to be a team that forces us to run so we changed it up a few weeks back to be ready.
