Depending on the size of your program, even losing 2-3 every year may be a big deal. If you've only got a team of 25 on average, you don't want to lose around 10% every year.

You're right though. There's definitely been a downtrend in those things. Football is about looking "fast" now. Cowboy collars don't make you look fast.

Only have had one kid wear it and he was an absolute monster. Kid was 5'5" on a good day and hit you with every pound of weight on his frame.

Most seniors that quit football, should. Truth. Never had a "dude" quit. Was always guys who just weren't football guys.

VERY rarely do we kick a kid off the team. But, the general rule is that any time a kid has shown that he is doing irreparable damage to the team consistently without regard then he is dismissed. A few years ago, we had a kid who stole from his teammates in the locker room. He did it twice and out the door he went. Things like that can't go without being taken care of.

Do you guys really have this many awkward situations with film exchanges? That's some bush league stuff.

bignose That's how I learned to scout. Live with pen and paper. Old HC would always have me scout this way and then take my notes home to "use them on the tape". I learned later that he wouldn't look at them and just do his own work off the film. He wanted me to learn old school lol. Flash forward ten years and our camera dies halfway through the third. Good thing there's a "dummy" on staff who always takes pen and paper to scout.

I think you need a good mix. You need to earn your experienced guys loyalty. And they in turn need to teach your young guys how to be coaches. Right. You need experienced guys to help establish a base and then get that pipeline going by taking on young guys (especially if they're former players) and teaching them how to coach.

Any coaches who do something bush league like that don't have to worry about gaining an advantage over us by exchanging poor quality film because we will send a coach to film them and we sure as hell will not be exchanging with them. I can see the argument for there needing to be guidelines. But, most coaches in our area realize we are all men doing good work for little to no money.

I don't know if you're right about stadiums filling up for the linemen. But, I do know that it fills up quicker if there's nothing but linemen in it.

lochness You're right, coach. It can sometimes seem like overdoing it when coaches wax poetic about being the surrogate parent in their kids' lives. In my experience, it's sad because I'm not trying to be that guy. I do as you say. I respect them, listen to them, talk to them, etc. and just genuinely care. Unfortunately, for some of these kids, you're the only person in their lives who is like that which thrusts you into that role.

carookie Just curious. What do kids say when you tell them they can't have your number after the graduate because "if they haven't learned by now, then they never will"?

We gotta remember too that our perspective of kids is different from people who strictly teach. We see them outside the confines of a classroom where they goof around and we joke back and forth. Coaches typically get into this because we love kids. I know a LOT of people that go into teaching because of other reasons then loving high school kids. That's not the case for everyone, but more than just a few I know of personally.
I feel differently about Sanchez because I know what he is. He's a goof ball whose dad left him when he was young. He makes people laugh because he's seeking attention. When things get tough, he thinks it's okay to quit because his dad walked out on him and his mom quits so many jobs I'm amazed she gets jobs anymore. I call him out when he's messing around and pull him aside later and tell him why his acting up is distracting the group. He gets it now. He loves football enough to stay and get hassled. This same kid got called out the other day in Math. He stood up, said "F&$! you and F&$! this class. I'll take summer school." And walked out. The way I see him and the math teacher sees him is totally different.

Talk to them a ton and none of it has anything to do with football. Had a great conversation the other day with a kid whose mom just got diagnosed with cancer. Told me he's going to spend spring break with his brother because his mind wasn't right. Kid has emotional issues and has problems communicating according to his file. He did just fine with me. Reason why? We were talking about this new video game we were both playing.
Outside of that, I'm at every single practice, meeting, and lift. Kids know I invest just as much time into the thing as they do. Kids don't like fakes. Exemplify how much you care just by being there.

When the kids squat and they don't put enough weight up because they're lazy, I'll tease them and say "I know you can lift more than that. I see the girls you talk to." They laugh and put some decent weight on the bar.
New kid comes out for football and is lifting for the first time. His buddy (varsity returner) tells him when he puts weight on the bar, "You're lucky coach hasn't seen your girl or we wouldn't have enough weights in here to get through your workout." Lmao.

coachgunter You're right. It is the coaches of one or both sports at a school that is the issue. I don't blame wrestling for my kids being pushed to lose fifty to sixty pounds. I blame their coaches. I don't dissuade my kids from wrestling, I encourage it. But, I'm quick to remind 220 pound Timmy that he isn't going to be wresting 170 this year, no matter what Sargeant Slaughter says.

General rules for the team: Don't do anything that would reflect poorly on yourself, your upbringing, or your team. Ignorance is not an excuse.
For my position group: Be on time. Do your best. Don't talk when I'm talking. Don't be a dbag.
The only time I've had an issue with the "common sense" rule is when I was working with kids who really had no idea what was socially acceptable. I'm talking about kids who smoke weed with their parents, get into fistfights with their fathers, curse out their mothers, think the word "bruh" is a sign of respect ... Those kids, I needed to constantly be in their ear about what was acceptable and what wasn't because I was the first adult to ever draw a line in the sand for them. In those situations, I can definitely understand all those rules 60zgo was talking about.

Weight room! Begin to a develop a nucleus of players that you can build around. Pour all your energy into those kids and create an atmosphere of marked improvement. Get them so strong and do things so competitive that they recruit for you. Develop those relationships of trust. Once they know you can help them and you care about them, it'll pick up immediately. Change starts from the inside out.

Nobody expects every single kid to be a great tackler the same way nobody expects every single kid to be a great receiver. But, it is 100% my expectation that every single kid will IMPROVE at tackling the same way every receiver coach's goal is to IMPROVE the kids' ability to catch.

I don't necessarily think our guys need to get bigger, so much as I think they need to lift heavy and eat well which will naturally lead to them getting bigger. I definitely don't need my OL wearing trash bags to workouts and eating cabbage soup while spitting into Gatorade bottles during class.

That's why I don't like my guys wrestling too. I would love my players to wrestle, but our school's coach wanted our 220 pound sophomore guard to cut to 180. Yeah, I don't think so.

Things I've cut out:
Paper scout reports for the defense, huddling on defense, conditioning by means of gassers, walk through day before game, watching entire film as a staff, Saturday practices, punishment after practice for tardiness (I just start cutting immediately into playing time), defensive goal sheet, two a days, hell week, printing the entire paper play book for assistants, choosing defensive captain (defense decides, they already know who the captain is anyway), and that's all I can think of for now.
