Yeah. It's been getting worse and worse over the years. Our local association is pretty solid. But traveling out of town and seeing some of the stuff going on when we scout games is ridiculous. Like a ref asking a coach to borrow a coin for the flip ... not kidding.

Usually it's a young guy. Just do your best to let him know that Tech is the way to go. Cure the ignorance.

Usually make fun of him to the point of tears. Hard part is having any respect from the staff after wiping my tears away.

Depends on the mistakes. If they know better, kick them in the rear ends. If they don't, correct it and move on. Film is still coaching. Shouldn't be different from practice.

Coaching isn't about getting. It's about giving. Your program is there to provide a culture where kids come in and become better men for having been a part of your program.
What do you do with kids who need football more than football needs them? You coach the $hit out of them and make sure you're reinforcing habits necessary to succeed out there in the real world. The same you would of any other kid. Don't put his a$$ out there on 4th and 1, but don't have him pay to attend the game either.

In college during his pregame speech our coach tells us that if anybody makes a tackle inside of the twenty on a kickoff he'd give him a dollar. A WHOLE DOLLAR! What really made it funny was that this would have required an almost superhuman effort. Polish Joe, our kicker, on a good day with the wind was barely kicking it to the twenty. When I was playing my junior year, our OL coach was an absolute legend in the area, and being as such, he was old as dirt. Loved him to death. One day after practice, our scout offense did a good job against our starting defense. Coach gives me a five dollar bill and says "Take the scout OL out for milkshakes on me." We ended up sharing that one milkshake lmao.

Continue to be consistent and fair. Let him know that you're there for him and that you'll be consistent and fair. Eventually, he'll learn you're there to build him up, not tear him down. Just have a talk with him about accepting criticism. That's something we all deal with for the entirety of our lives. That's a more important lesson than picking up loopers. You're on the right track, coach. Keep it going.

Whats worse is I know some coaches who use these all the time. Tell the kids them, sprinkle them throughout scouting reports, send them out with their hourly remind text. Heck, I worked a youth camp once where the head of the league was talking to 8 yr olds about loving the grind. Its bad enough to be a 16 year old and buy into this crap, but you cannot be a grown man and communicate like this (let alone use hashtags and emoticons). #yadada #yafeelme

For those of you who coach both football and track, is this in addiction to being a teacher? I wouldn't do it just because I'm not willing to grind that many months out of the year. Two sports? Weekends ... I don't think so.

That's why I love our weight room setup. We have a football only weight room. That's the one with the Racks and the free weights. The other weight room is all cables. Sports only get into the football weight room if we're not using it and they show proper use and care of the equipment.

Well, I never discourage players from participating in a sport. It sucks that the track coach isn't well-informed but I'd still do whatever I could to have them lifting when I could. If he tells the kids they can't lift, then so be it. It's on him. Neither do I. I'll never discourage a kid from playing another sport. But, if I know the coach does things the right way, I'll talk him up, get some kids interested, sport some gear, etc. If they're a waste of time, I say nothing to promote them.

Too hard to find track coaches around here (or coaches of any other sport for that matter) that believe in lifting weights. That's a "no way am I going to support you" situation for me.

The system QB thing drives me crazy. Some coaches are better at adapting what they do to what their talent is adept at. Some guys do well in one system and then move onto a franchise that does something else and it doesn't translate. Every QB plays in a system, so they're all "system QBs". Unless you're saying that some guys don't do well outside of their preferred system, but isn't that more on the coaches for not taking advantage of a player's skill set? I don't know. That argument just never made sense to me.

Watched the HC from American River College, a JuCo in CA, speak on some run Gap schemes. He was great. Very knowledgeable and pretty funny. I'm usually impressed with most OL guys.
Biggest pet peeve is guy who you watch in the first session and then you feel like you went back in time because the second session is 80% of what he said in the first session.

I always have questions about coaches who say that. We are a Power I team. We run Power out of Pro sets, Unbalanced sets, two TEs, Three TEs, etc. So let's say we are playing a Wing T team or a Spread team or a team that bases out of Empty. How the hell am I supposed to use my terminology?

Script your sessions and have cards printed out in the order you want them run. If you have play 5 the same as play 1, print it out twice and staple it together that way. Don't have assistants flip through cards.
Make sure you know who will be playing what scout team wise ahead of time. Have a depth chart for your scout coach if at all possible. For when you sub kids from the scout offense into the defense and vice versa.
Color code or label the positions.
I don't label the cards X and Z. I label it R and L for Right receiver and Left receiver. They don't switch sides. Versus Spread, SR and SL = slot right and slot left.
We usually script around 24 plays. 12 for the first team. 8 for the 2s. 4 for the 3s. All plays we try to accomplish in 20 minutes. If the 3s don't get in during the allotted time, that's on you and the other coaches for not going fast enough.
MOST IMPORTANT: Make your scout team fun! Don't grind on those kids the way you would the starters. They're doing their best to make the team better and not getting any game run for it. Don't be a douche.

I was scouting a team we were going to play the next week. Didn't know much about them. During the game, their defense comes off the field and the DC rips his DT. "Don't give me that sh!t again! What did I say? If it's a pass, get your hands up, put your head down, and scream as loud as you can! No more excuses!"
I had seen all I had to see at that point. Scout trip over.

Agreed about quality of the clinic this year. There were times in years past where a trip to the Claimjumpers sounded better than the lineup.

I heard the Antioch OC is going to tell us about his offense. "1,000,000 and 1 ways to get the ball to the #1 back in the nation." 😉

One of the best clinics I went to was with Duane Akina. He talked about Man Free. I thought, "Oh great. I've seen this before." He went into great detail about the problems he ran into with getting kids to play Man Free and how they teach it, rep it, and fix it when it's gone wrong. It was extremely informative.

I think Mariner is dead on with his take on it being about the details. Tell me what you do, why you do it, HOW you go about getting the kids to do it, and how you troubleshoot it when you came up against some kind of obstacle.

I remember my OL coach complaining to us about how only the playside of the OL would point out and make calls. Backside would just sit there silent waiting for the snap count to zone the backside gaps. One team figured it out and would blitz at the front side every time. Didn't mean much because we were Option based. But, it was still a good pickup on their part.

I was reading another thread and have seen many times where coaches talk about watching film and gathering "tells". I always thought something was wrong with me because I NEVER can see that kind of stuff. Maybe, I thought, it's just because I don't know what I'm looking for. So, I pose this question to you guys: "When watching film of an opponent, what are some things you look for in player behavior?"
The other thread had a story about checking which way the QB first turns his head to scan the field. That's good stuff. Anything else?

Someone nailed it up above, respect. When I work with people I respect, I am open and honest and everything is great. When I work with people who I don't respect, I am courteous and get in and get out.
It doesn't take much to get my respect. Just love the kids, love the game, and be willing to work hard to help this thing succeed. Unfortunately, some guys are not these things.
