Coaches what do you do for your high school teams in terms of quarters played or stipulations to earn a varsity letter? Thanks..

Finish the season in good standing.

Half the Quarters of the season. So a 10 game season you must have 20 quarters. Finish the season you get your numbers and knight head.
Also if you are a program kid, stuck it out for 4 years, or just a senior who deserves it but wasn't good enough to play varsity/would have but got injured...award that kid a letter.

Either played in half of the total quarters of the season or been a senior.

25% of the quarters. Or be an upperclassman who makes 100% of the practices and is named by the coaches. Starting on any special teams unit pretty much earns a letter.

We have two ways: The first is if you attend 90% or more of the entire off season you will automatically letter. The second is 20 quarters.

For me, it's not so much being a part of the team as being a CONTRIBUTING member of the team. At my parent meeting, I explain the difference between being ON the team and being a CONTRIBUTING member. Kids today are too used to being given everything (e.g. trophies for being on the team in little league). A Varsity Letter must be EARNED in order for it to mean anything. That said, it doesn't mean one has to be a starter, but little Johnny had better be one heck of a practice guy (i.e. did he make us better today). We don't give out letters like candy.

Slight twist on the subject: Do your kids care? I know it was a HUGE deal when I was in school. I'm not sure what our requirement was, but I got a letter as a Jr.
The reason I ask is that a friend of mine coaches at a small school, and their JV's had to fold after 5 games because of low numbers. My friend had 5 JV's move up to Varisty (all were invited). He talked with the head coach and they are going to letter those 5 sophmores/freshmen.
He made a big deal out of the lettering, and they didn't seem to "get it" or care. Very few wear letter-jackets (can't afford...it isn't "cool")
Just wanted to throw that out there.....see what you think....

And let me clear something up- I don't think the kids care but maybe some do. I KNOW the coaches don't care. We're spending ZERO time counting quarters or having a "Yea" or "Nay" vote on whether a scout teamer gets a letter. If that means that an "undeserving" kid gets a letter, so be it.

Huge deal here. Every kid (minus one) who has a varsity letter wears their jacket all the time. Huge deal.
We're stingy with our letters. You need to make a significant contribution to letter or be a four year player after your senior year.

My sons graduated 4 years ago from the same high school I attended. When I was there, any kind of a letter in any sport was a big deal. Kids who could see they weren't varsity caliber in their sport of choice (football and basketball were equally popular) would go out for track or cross country or golf for a couple years to get that letter.
My sons both wrestled as freshman (one lettered as a freshman) and then switched to track and cross country, lettering each year... neither had the slightest interest except for listing it on college admission forms. And few of their friends cared either. Just wasn't cool. In fact, I very seldom saw a varsity jacket on any of them (one kid wore his regular, but I know the family, his mom coaxed him into it).
