Our first game is this Saturday (i.e. in THREE days) and we still haven't been told who we are playing yet. Makes it tough to prepare. Anyway, according to the Orange Empire Conference's website (Orange County, CA), we are playing a team from their conference. If anyone here coaches in the OEC, please respond here or send me a PM - I need to get some contact info and hopefully a brief scouting report (at this point, I'd be thrilled just to know what schemes they run). Thanks in advance.

Nevermind - I think I have found the info I needed. If anyone knows anything in terms of a scouting report on the Yorba Linda Midget Aztecs, I would appreciate that, though.

Yeah, we're going to need it. From what I've been told, we're going to be totally overmatched - they are a very strong program and this is their "A" team - only 1 or 2 1st year players on the entire team (we have about 10). On top of that, not only did I lose the entire secondary from last season (including subs - all six kids who played DB either moved away or defected to the Snoop Dogg League ... auughh), but of the six kids that I had playing DB this year, 3 are out with injuries. I only have three guys left to play DB. If anyone needs a rest or gets hurt, I'll have to either move a DE back into the secondary or try to hide a MPP at Safety. This is not how I wanted to start the season. Oh, well - it is what it is - we'll just have to make the best of it and hope no one else gets hurt. We could use a little luck, too.

Good luck x2 then........all kiding aside, we all get trounced from time to time. S but play smart, keep their offese off the field as much as possible, avoid frustration penalties..they don't need any help. Maybe have a suprise up your sleeve
Doug, just out of curiosity what schemes are you running?

Auugghh ... we did get trounced - 27-0. They were a very good, athletic team that was very well coached (and only had 1 first-year player). On the bright side of things, we didn't sustain any serious injuries and I don't think our kids got overly demoralized. Plus, my defense didn't do too badly - 3 or their 4 scores came from drives starting inside our 25 yard line. We had a couple stupid mistakes in the secondary that I think we can easily fix, plus some poor tackling that we should be able to fix. Otherwise, we hung in there with them pretty well.
Offensively was another story all together. Nothing worked - we just couldn't get untracked - we only got one first down all night. We had a dropped pass and a stupid penalty that negated a couple first downs, but even three first downs is far from acceptable. We have a lot of work to do.
Anyway, regarding schemes, we run a 5-3 on defense (with a 6-2 for goalline/short yardage situations). On offense, we run a 4-wide spread and a standard shotgun (plus a wishbone package for MMP unit). We spread primarily to run, but our #1 back is a first year player and we had two of our top WRs out with injuries tonight, so it was asking a lot to try to compete with a top-notch opponent like we saw tonight. I didn't expect our offense to do great this early, but I was hoping for a little better than what we got. I've tried to get our head coach to cut down our playbook since I joined this staff last year - I've had some success, but we're still doing too much to expect any consistent execution this early in the season. The bright side of things is that we should be executing much better by the end of the season when it really counts. Using last year as an example, we lost two regular seasons games by scores of 13-12 and 12-7, then beat those same teams in the postseason 40-24 and 36-6. It may take another month or so for the offense to get untracked, so the pressure is on me to really tighten up the defense.

Well coach, that is a real positive that you didnt sustain any major injuries. We havent played yet, but the season starts next saturday and our offense seems to be off to a slow start at best. We only have one formation in so far and a couple plays at best. We have the athletes to make things happen and a big front line with mostly 10 year olds who have all played before. Best of luck to you next game coach.
