Had to ask, I have always wondered what people thought of this. Had guys wear this in high school (not always the best players either, but some were very talented) and of course we see it at the College level.
Thanks in Advance (sorry to those who hate Polls)

Just ask Coach Rod at Michigan. He did away with the #1 receiver wearing the #1 jersey.

Its all about how you perceive it as a coach and how you let the kids perceive it. You can shut down any talk or bragging about it real quick if you handle it the right way and quickly.

I do not have single numbers. I have 10 through 99. single numbers promote individuals. when you are a team it is a collectivist situation. you cannot stand out. sort of like government health care where you are just a number.

You're just a number to your insurance company too... That number is how much profit they can make off of you. Anyway I've gone back and forth on the idea of having single digits and I've come to the realization that it is the coach that determines if those numbers will be a problem. We have a bunch of single digits this year and the kid who wears #1 is easily the most difficult kid on the team but even he is coming around... The kid who wears #2 couldn't be a harder worker or have a better attitude (same with the kid who wore it before him).

Obviously this is just my opinion, but I feel the exact same. First year head coach, only youth, but I dont allow any single digit numbers here either. Not all kids will do this, but some will just pick one of those numbers in order to set themselves apart.

I will never have a number 1 or 69... JMHO I was #69 in HS I started a tradition i guess because one of our "good kids" picks the number every year. The last 4 years whoever our #69 was, has been one of my favorite, most pleasant kids on the team

How do single numbers promote individuals? In that vain, then everyone having a different number promotes individuals. When I look in the Philly Eagles backfield and see #36, I know its Brian Westbrook, not just one of the Eagles five six whatever running backs.

I love seeing single digits on my LB's makes my little guys look HUGE (with the exception of #1)!!!

We have had some real turds wear the number 1 the last few years and we real close to "retiring" it in their honor this year but decided to give it to the smallest frosh. we have. That way if the former number 1's (they should have been number two's in my view) come watch a game they can see the smallest kid on the team in their old number.

One of the first things that I did was get rid of the number 1...
It is too much of a Mr. Showtyme thing for me...
It is one of the only numbers I have in all three sets of tops but I still stuck to my guns and got rid of it...
I told my team if you are #1 in your graduating class then I will let you wear it...that was the end of that discussion...

I do not get the big deal about number #1. It is just a number, if you were #2 do you think your second best??? I think sometimes we read way to much into things.

When I was a senior in HS our new coach gave me number 1 and I thought I was "special." However, nobody else, including my girlfriend, did.
I think it's "special" or a distraction only if you make it one - like Bo did at Michigan after Anthony Carter, and as Rodriguez did by discontinuing the tradition.
We have single (odd) digits on our team including 1 and haven't heard a comment about it one way or the other.

Our DC picks a kid every year to wear 1. None of the kids pay attention to it. Its only an issue if you allow it to be an issue. I am all for single digit numbers. Its no big deal. Maybe because I wore a single digit and everyone in the backfield from my class wore one.

To me, it's no big deal. We have a number 1, 6, and 9 this year and none of them fit the "individualistic" stereotype sometimes associated with single digit numbers.

We just ordered new UA jerseys.
We went from having 2 single number jerseys to having all 9.
It's not a big deal.
The kid who got #1 is our starting WR.....6'4'' 180lb kid with self-esteem issues......but he blocks his arse off.
I've spent the last week (and this one) pumping this kid up.
I wish he played with some ego.
So, in that vein, throw me in with the "just a number" crowd.

Here's a question: How is wanting to wear a single-digit number calling attention to youself any more than an Indy-area kid who wants to wear #19 or a HS LB from Baltimore who wants to wear #52?

Here's a question: How is wanting to wear a single-digit number calling attention to youself any more than an Indy-area kid who wants to wear #19 or a HS LB from Baltimore who wants to wear #52? Or a QB who wants to wear, say, #22. Auburn had a QB in 1999 that wore #22 (Gabe Gross who now plays for the Tampa Bay Rays)...it was a tribute to his father who had worn #55 at Auburn. Though I hated the number for a QB, I understood why he wanted to wear it, and it didn't seem "self aggrandizing". Lots of kids choose numbers for such a reason.
