I'm a first year pop warner coach. I have coached high school for 4 years, two as an offensive coordinator on the Varsity level. There are two mighty mite teams in my town. I showed my face and helped out at the end of last year knowing that I wanted to coach my son and have one of the two teams this year. I think they were intimidated by me. I didn't even get one of the teams but luckily the head coach of my team knew right off the bat that I had some football knowledge and I put in the single wing.
Long story short is..... the coaching in the area is "less than impressive." Nice guys, very nice guys but not a clue. "The Gators did this on Saturday so we're gonna do it...."
The team has my son and one other kid that can actually run the ball. I also was lucky enough to get one good lineman.
The other team is STACKED with second year players. BIG kids and I can see that they have 5-6 real solid athletes for skill positions.
No kidding, it is ridiculous how unbalanced these teams are. The other team seems like it is the "cool kids" if you know what I mean. They have 8 coaches! We have three including me.
We scrimmaged the other night and we killed them. Power, Power, Spinner Wedge, Power, Power Pass, Sweep, Reverse..... everything worked. Their athletes couldn't find the ball.
On offense they were under center and they fumbled 5 times with the center, qb exchange. ALL of which we recovered. There best play was a pitch and the QB pitch hit the ground twice on the way to the RB which we recovered one. Nothing they did looked smooth.
IN MY OPINION THE BEST WAY TO COACH OFFENSE AT THIS LEVEL IS:
1. Have a simple system in place that the kids can understand and MASTER 5-6 plays MAX
2. At the 7-8 year old level DO NOT have a Center-QB exchange. It's a nightmare.
3. The Wedge is an unstoppable force BUT you must try to do it EVERY practice.
WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS ON WHAT WORKS AT THE YOUTH LEVEL?
