Last year I had to deal with a rather obnoxious band.. this school.. we do not even have one.. or at least not a big one.. 10 kids..
but last year they always seemed to blast their horns as loud as they could at the most inopportune times..
Friday night we were on our opponents 15 yardline with 3rd and 5.. we try to get them to jump off sides.. and our cheerleaders and yelling at the top of their lungs..
I tell them to stop cheering.. and they keep on.. I give the cut sign.. and tell them to please be quiet.. several players also try to relay the message.. and maybe a couple of coaches.
I get an email from the cheer sponsor about it today.. that some parents called her and complained..
I might get in trouble.. but I told her to refer them to me in the future, because I would feel better telling them F-U, than I would telling her..

Don't you know that the only reason people come to a game is to watch the cheerleaders and listen to the band? That's why no one goes to HS soccer games--no cheerleaders or band

If its any consolation, that band you had last year is just as obnoxious and bigger this year...
Bear in mind, EVERY band in your locale seems to be into this, though most don't do it when their team is on offense.
Last Friday, our band was "so good", (can post clips of this) our deaf nose guard can be seen dancing and stepping to the jazzy horns of our band before the play (only to be rolled like a tumbleweed for 15 yards once the play starts)
This is a cultural/regional thing - good sensed yankees don't do this (these minimalistic bands comprised of nothing but horns, drums, and spirited girls are pretty awesome, though )
Either you get along with the band director or you don't. Most know where their bread is buttered, and who the principal will side with. But in your situation, who WILL that principal side with?

We don't have a band but we do have a large/loud cheer group. Last year I met with the coach and captains before the season and told them how happy I was to have them but it would REALLY help us if they could do their cheers/claps/songs/etc at the right time. 10 years ago I would have told them where to put their pom poms but this time a brief meeting got us all on the same page. Try a little tenderness ...

At a school where I used to coach....the band made up shirts that said...and I'm not joking here. "football players need to get off the band field"
Needless to say there was an uproar.

Our cheer coach is actually a former girlfriend of mine who I taught a lot about the situations of football, which she's taught to her girls. They're still kinda annoying at times, but at least the days of "DE! FENSE!" cheers when we're on O are gone.

airraider, are you at a predominatly black high school?
I ask because I played at a HBCU and coaches at a mainly black High School, with 350 memebers in the band.
In college, we were no huddle and the band does know when to play low, but the band never stops playing and yelling at the band, would get the football team boo'ed. (Not excusing them most band directors know the rules) But our band played 4 quarters virtually none stop esp. when the ball is on the other side of the 50.
Being in LA, I'm sure you have seen Grambling or Southern play.
Just talk to her again and say we need to hear and explain that you also get a flag when the other team has the ball.

I was at a 99% black high school last year. This year, the school I am at is about 55% white. Heck last year the band funded football.. lol.. they brought in the crowds..

Band parents and Cheerleading parents and weird, then. Just talk to the AD or the principal and have them relay the message

The cheerleaders here always yell we want a touchdown when the other team is driving. I don't know if they want us to lose or what. Our band has 15 members, seriously, and parents play in it as well as people that graduated 8 years ago.

It was weird for me to see as well. I guess they don't have enough kids that want to play in the band on Fridays, because there are a good many middle schoolers as well. Good news for the parents is that they don't have to learn any new songs, they have played the same songs for the past 15 years.

I politely told the band director to shut the band up or he would have a tuba up his @$$ if he didn't learn when to play and when to zip it. Never had any troubles after that conversation. I did find out he complained to one of the senior teachers on staff, I was in my second year, and the elder statesman basically said "you got 15 kids making noise not a band..."

Bobby Bowden's rule # 1 never coach at a high school where the band is more important then the football team.

A good band is awesome. The band where I played HS ball was fantastic as were the cheerleaders. The band and the cheerleaders knew when to do what and did a great job. I'd say that between the football team (90+ kids) and the band (150+ kids) the cheerleaders (30+ girls) and the flag team (50+ girls) we had over 1/3 of the school involved in the game.
Where I coach at our band is a complete joke and we have 5 years before they and the cheerleaders try hard to learn what to do but IMO it would be much easier if the cheer coach cared to learn.

LOL! its great when a senior teacher has the football teams back, or they can at least see how bad the band is.
