A few things I've noticed about the youth game after a couple of months:
1. You're liable to hear anything at any time on the practice field: 'Coach I made a triangle.'
2. You're liable to see anything from the other team on defense. a. There's no telling what kind of scheme they may want to run. b. There's no telling where their kids are going to line up.
3. How can anybody with an internet connection not have a sound offensive and defensive scheme?
4. Fundamentals and the off tackle hole are pure gold.

I have coached HS Varsity for my whole coaching career. You are right in all respects. I don't know about you but the coaching at the youth level around here is TERRIBLE! Nice guys, not a CLUE how to coach.

All it takes is a few hours a week on the internet, or reading a couple of books. I know in the league I coach in, it is mandatory to have 15 hours of coaching clinics in before you can be an assistant. After 2 yrs of being an assistant you than can apply for a HC.

That sounds like par for the course around here also, ut and tut......heres a couple more from my years of youth coaching......somebodys always gonna be late for the game = depending on parents to get them there, who have no sense of urgency..... ....several somebody's won't have all their equipment, when they do get to the game = dog chewed it up....mother lost it during washing.....little brother was playing with it and now can't find it....tried to reheat mouthpiece to get old bubblegum out of it = now its melted... ...so keeping a good supply of extra pads and mouthpieces was pretty important.... ....we played on Thursday evenings so this would apply to that game time = In Oct. when the fair comes and Thursday night is discount night for students = some of them will be at the fair......hopefully, the ones you'd wish would go somewhere else, "every" Thursday night.

It's fair week here this week. Had a good turnout Monday, yesterday not so much.
From talking to the parents this year, I may write a book titled: Youth Football: Coaching is Not Yelling
Subtitled: Hit Somebody! Is not a defensive scheme
We seem to start slow this year and I like to tell myself it's because the defenses are lining up all over the place and it takes a series or two to get everybody on the same page. But when we do it's usually off to the races.

Ha, Ha.....the funniest thing these kids around here would do is = on a real cold night, some of the more "cold natured", wore their school clothes "underneath" their football uniforms......I mean like hooded sweat shirts, blue jeans, long sleeve dress shirts, whatever... ....friggin hilarious....didn't seem to effect their play at all though.....just looked funny......one of my starting RB's showed up to a game with his older brothers track shoes on(spikes included) and thought it was perfectly fine... ...most common thing I heard constantly during games(especially after a play for no gain) = "put me in coach, I can break" = response -"Thanks for letting me know that son, aren't you supposed to be at the fair tonight"?

There was no context, that's what was great about it. We had just finished a drill and I was bringing them up to break for water and that came out. I know he had some point he was trying to make but it escaped him so he just shut up.

I am in Rochester, NY and was at the Syracuse-UT game in 1998, the year they won the National Championship. Now, on to the topic at hand... This was an actual conversation between me and a player on day 1... Me- So how well do you know the game of football? Player- very well, I watch it all the time Me- oh that's excellent Player- But I do have just one question coach. Me- Sure, whats up Player- How many outs do we get? That might have been the funniest moment I have experienced. Althought some players did show up to the first game wearing shin pads from soccer.

My favorite player moment is one that I have to share now thanks to you guys.
I run Dave C's UBSW and one of my TBs had been screwing up the off tackle play for an entire scrimmage. He kept taking the ball outside of the kickout block and losing a yard or two or worse when the DE would easily nab him (since he ran right into him) After trying to explain in several different ways what he was supposed to do on the power play (and by different ways I mean nice, not so nice, quiet, and not so quiet), he sat out for a bit, and came back in late in the scrimmage.
I called a power play and the kid ran through the hole. It was amazing. The hole was huge, literally 5 yards across and he ran upfield and would have scored but he got run down from behind by the other teams stud (well one of many of theirs).
After the game I was talking to him, saying great job, you finally did what I asked and look what happened! And he said, and I quote-
"Yea, you called the play and I thought 'Hey, maybe I'll listen this time', and I did and I almost scored!"
Great stuff.

Some time in the late 90s we're in a scrimmage, so the OC is in the huddle calling the play, when one of the RBs pops up and announces, "Oh, coach, that isn't a good play for me."
I almost fell down laughing. Of course the RB wasn't laughing as he was immediately dismissed from the huddle and sent to the sideline.

After our week 2 win we were lining up to shake hands and two of our minimum play kids ( 12 play minimum ) asked me separately " Did we win coach? " , I responded yes and they both got really excited. I just wonder what they were watching LOL ?

As a long time youth OC its amazing how well a defender will do because he wont do his job. Ever run a trap against a DT that just stands up? Well he ends up making the tackle while your trap man runs his perfect block on air while wondering where his man is that coach assured him would be right here. So...no more traps on this day after you just spent the entire week perfecting them.
Kids will ruin the best laid plans and its why we love what we do. Sometimes you just have to step back and chuckle.

this is good stuff.
I had one similar to eickst. Kid says to parent after scrimmage.
" You know what mom when I do what coach tells me to do it actually works".
And probably my favorite is a MMP comes up and asks if he can go in and bear crawl. My response No we are on Offense! kids are great.

Last season, I'm coaching 12-yr olds. Kid comes up to me and asks:
Kid: Coach, can I ask you something? Me: Sure, what's up? Kid: Promise you won't get mad? (starting to giggle/laugh) Me: Ummm, okay, I won't get mad .. what is it? (thinking he's going to ask something stupid like if he can do an endzone dance if he scores or something) Kid: Nawww... forget it ... you'll get mad. Me: I'm not going to get mad ... just tell me what it is ... I promise I won't get mad at you. Kid: You sure? Me: Yeah, what is it? Kid: How's your sex life?
He caught me off guard, to say the least - that was not what I was expecting. It still cracks me up just thinking about it.

How about "Coach, you know, you are lucky....I almost didn't make it to practice tonight as I seem to have a big problem with acid reflux! My mom says it runs in the family so I'm not alone....good for you though, huh?"

Hey there, not trying to hijack the thread and im actually responding to #2 on the original post, but our season finally started today and saw a defense I hadnt seen before.
...........................................X............................................. ......................................................................................... .................................X..................X.................................. ......................................................................................... ........X.........X.....X......X.......X........X........X......X.........X..... ................................O.O.O.O.O.O.O................................. ..............................O..........O..........O............................... ...........................................O...........................................
Yes, vs double wing this teamed line up like this, and all I could think was ok it helps on the sweeps, but what about the multitude of plays that can hit up the middle? lol. I dont know if they ever changed cuz I went to go watch another game, but has anyone ever seen something like this before? We play them in our second game and I am hoping they line up like this against us.

If that was a defense vs a Markham style DW team, the DW team would have just wedged every single down until the other team either called time and switched out of the defense, or quit LOL>

Maybe he has a Canadian DC opposing him?
Any time six or more are on the line you want to try a direct run inside or get behind them in the flat on a pass....

I would say the funnest thing was when we had one of our lineman in the backfield and he ran for a 30 yard td.....I ran out on the field and darn near got a penalty. All the kids could talk about was how fired up I was.......stupidest parent moment was when one of our kids got a personal foul, almost immediately his dad started screaming "throw him out!" I just shook my head in disbelief
