Ok, need to see if any of you coaches have had to deal with a kid or kids with "ADD" I'm not really familiar with it when it comes to football.
Issue is I have a 8yr old 1st year player with a issue of some sort. We have had 5 practices. This kid actually doesn't disrupt practice at all. It's the opposite actually. He's almost mute, and beyond uncoordinated. (I've seen toddler run faster than him) Last night was just terrible. Kid shows up basically in a stupor. He can't stand much less walk or run. Totally out of it. We ended practice with a little tackle drill on the dummy, no way he was going to get it done so we just sat him.
So at the first water break I get a chance to talk with Dad to see if his boy is feeling ok. Dad says he basically ok just didn't take his ADD meds. I haven't study this disorder nor claim to know anything about it, but I thought meds for "ADD" was to calm a kid or person, not pep them up? or unless the issue is autism and the "ADD" meds are to help with the coma like trance??
As you may be able to see I have no knowledge here. My huge concern is we go full contact next practice and there is no way this kids can participate in this condition, Just can't have parents not getting his meds and expect him to practice, however when on the meds is it safe for him to be playing contact football? He did manage to provide a medical release. I'm not comfortable with him making contact at all. At this stage the dummy and him have the same ability when off his meds, serious! I have three players with a lot of baby still in them on the team and expect to go the full season without them hitting, but they are attentive and respond to commands and for the most part can protect themselves. This "ADD" kid eye's stay closed during drills and is about a full 2-3 secs slow in reaction time and never focused unless he's getting water.
What should I be doing here? I know i need to talk to some but who first? Dad, board? I don't mind him on the team but his safety is a question for me. I thinking football isn't gonig to be for him and not sure why his parents are want to see him injuried before realizing it. If it was my son and he was totally out of it, I'd A. not bring him to practice, B. notify the coach my son has a condition and to make sure he safe. I haven't gotten anything form the parents. I know my asst's. and I clearly were concerned last night as the other parents watching try to figure out if this kid was ok.
Thanks
