There is a private school league in Alabama, but it's not that large and is quite spread out. A fair percentage of private schools play in the AHSAA with all the public schools.
There is a 1.35 multiplier for private school enrollment though, which typically results in a private school playing up a classification. There is also a 'competitive balance' rule which uses a point system that could push a private school up an additional classification, but you have to be dominating over several years for that to occur.

This happened in Alabama this past week, in the first round of the playoffs: Northside vs. DARWhat the article doesn't mention is that the reason Northside was down on the 5 yard line before the fumble on their last drive is that Northside's running back had broken off what should have been a TD run to take the lead, but as he's running down the sideline for the score one of Northside's coaches screams at him to go down short of the end zone, so he slows up and is caught at the 5. Now, this is with only a couple of minutes left in the game... Talk about no faith in your defense. Instead of likely going up 37-36 with two minutes left they end up losing 36-30. Ouch.

Shorten practice late in the season.
Give the backups more reps.

7th and 8th graders can play varsity football? That is crazy. How is that possibly safe? Sounds like a lawsuit just waiting to happen. Heck...in the 20 or so years I have been around high school football, I have never even seen a FRESHMAN who was a legitimate varsity football player, never mind kids still in middle school! In 2010 we started 3 freshmen on offense and went 10-2. One of them, the QB, was a 4 year walk-on at Alabama. Three on a successful team is probably fairly uncommon, but there are plenty of freshmen out there who can make an impact. Certainly it depends on the size of the school/the level of football being played, but they are out there.

We just do helmets and girdles. But we keep them focused by 'playing the game'. It's a short walk through practice, but the whole thing is scripted as if it was a game. This makes sure that we go through every situation that we may see on Friday night. And it keeps the kids engaged, as they're coming on and off the field for offense, defense, and various special teams. So they have to listen.

I'm not a hot shot coach, but the only reason I've ever won chit is because of talent man. My position group last season included a guy that placed top 6 in the state in the 100m as a junior and a guy that signed with Alabama. I must say, I felt like a pretty good coach last year.

Seems like every year we have one. This season it will be our backup running back from last year as our starting left guard. Looking great so far!
Kids grow and change, and in their own time. That's just the nature of it at the high school level. Nothing to worry about!

We use Critical Reload. Have a shake machine set up in the weight room. More info on critical reload. MORE!!!!! This looks awesome tell me everything!! How much per week do you think you spend? And how many athletes does this provide for This is awesome!!! Heh, well, our strength coach handles all of that. But he really likes it. He knew of several strength coaches at programs that he really respected that had been using it for some time and he finally managed to make the switch this year. I imagine they've got everything you need to know on their website.

Huh, Wimp's kid is your basketball coach. I had no idea... Congrats to you guys! Wish we could play AISA schools, we still need a week 10 game for next year! Pretty cool when you have Barry Sanderson and John Copeland as boys coaches and Wimp and Scott in the corner cheering on the team. Plus we had the Alabama women coaches, Kristy Curry and her husband Kelly, there and Alabama assistant John Pelphrey cheering us on also because their daughters play with my daughter on the girls team. Saban’s daughter went here along with a lot of Bama assistant coaches’ kids. Hoping whoever they hire as d line coach has a teenage son or two!! Pretty special place. I am very fortunate. Our Head of School (Who was our head football coach from 2009-2015) was at ACA before he moved up here. He had the same kind of thing when he was down there. Lots of coaches kids and really talented athletes. Saw tape of some of them in his last few years there, I remember Mark Gottfried's kid was a beast of a wide receiver.

Sounds like that basketball coach has built one hell of a culture there Actually, he is brand new since September. But helps that he has coached in the SEC and ACC for twenty years and that his dad is a legend. Also helps that he is on the guys about getting stronger. Our baseball coach is the same way. Played in minors for 9 years and knows the importance of weight lifting. Funny how the guys that have actually been there and done that, want the kids to get stronger and the "wanna be" bball and baseball coaches don't like it. That being said, I am flexible with these guys and we do workouts, not wearouts! Huh, Wimp's kid is your basketball coach. I had no idea... Congrats to you guys! Wish we could play AISA schools, we still need a week 10 game for next year!

Related situation. We were up 49-0 at halftime in our week 10 game this season. The other teams coach requested a running clock for the second half. No problem. But then he proceeds to kick an onside kick to open up the second half. This was not an accidental/bad kick. It was clearly intentional. I had to roll my eyes at that one. You're conceding by asking for the running clock and then you go and do that...

Lost a d1 player. Lost a 6'3 245 mike linebacker to a 6A school where he was their best LB. Lost the number 9 kicker in the nation. Lost a WR and S who was a two time first team all state bball player. We were 3-6 last year. Beat three poor teams. First losing season in a while. We are 8-1 right now. Beat 5 great teams. One of your guys isn't the reason Central Tuscaloosa had to forfeit all those games, is he?

We talked one of those guys into coming back last season. He poisoned the well. Wasn't bought in, had a cavalier and entitled attitude, and drug other guys down with him. Every situation is different, but I'd let them go.

We've got the best of both worlds. The school is doing eclipse activities and having a viewing, but they're letting kids out if they want to go to the totality zone (we're in a 97% area). And we're just pushing the start of practice back an hour. Win win.

So, season three of Last Chance U is going to be filmed at Independence Community College in Kansas. I'm already excited to see the next season, as I have a player that will be a DT there this fall. Fortunately he's not likely to be a dramatic enough story to be featured on the show, but still...

If kids have a great game of course they talk to them but often the reporters ask me who can talk about the upcoming game or a pre-season review. True story. A few years ago the local paper asked to do a 'getting to know you' article on one of our players. So we let our senior mike backer do it, and this was one of the quotes that came out of the story: Q: What's your favorite video game? A: Grand Theft Auto V. It's pretty much real-life stuff. That's the reason I love it. You can do whatever you want. You can pretty much go to strip clubs and make money from bank robberies.

We script reps for 1's and 2's. Four plays for 1's, then 2 plays for 2's. So, 2:1 ratio.

The thing about a rule is, once you make it you have to enforce it... This is why I think it's very - very - important to think through every rule you may implement and try to imagine 1) if you can live with the worst case scenario of enforcing it (ex: a key player sitting the bench and costing you a game) and 2) if a situation may arise where enforcing the rule defies common sense (ex: you require X number of workouts during the summer to be able to play but a good, hardworking kid spends his summers out of state living with his dad). Strongly consider possible exceptions to your rules before you break out the hammer and chisel and set them in stone. Try to avoid putting yourself in a situation where you have to choose between winning, your integrity, and doing the right thing because of some poorly conceived, short-sighted rule. Yeah, exactly what I was trying to imply with my original post. I think some just missed the nuance...

So true Matt and that is the hardest thing. You have to stick to your guns so to say but as you lay the foundation to the program it will then take care of itself. Kids will know what they can and can't do. Tough at first enforcing the rule but great later on. i'm going to come out and say it: I think you guys are out of your phukin minds. A kids has to miss offseason workouts because he's taking a class and you want to keep him off the field whether he's good or not? Doesn't make sense. A death in the family is the only excuse? Phuk me, that sounds insane. I've been in this business for a long time. We've had some success and have had a good offseason program, which has been a big part of that success. That has not been because we gig kids for taking a class or because they go on vacation with the family. That was not the point of my post at all. Rather, be judicious with the rules you make, because there are so few things that can be considered absolutes. When you say "Must attend 100% of summer practices or X is the result", well then you have to enforce X, because you're a chump if you don't. So don't make the rule to begin with. I've been a part of a program where the head coach made a ton of rules and was an all or nothing black & white guy, and it bit him in the butt repeatedly. It was a valuable lesson for me... Oh, and he got fired. Deservedly so. Life is grey, and the few rules that you have should account for that. Building the culture you want is a process, and cutting off your nose to spite your face is not, typically*, a great strategy. (* Every situation is different)

I had a player who graduated in 2011 who, to this day, still tells people that the only reason he didn't have a scholarship offer from Alabama is because I wouldn't make him a highlight film. Perhaps it had something to do with him being a 5'6", 4.75 40, third string running back? In fact he tried and failed to walk on at bama, multiple times. Some kids/parents/people in general are just delusional and even being smacked in the face with reality isn't going to set them straight. It's always somebody else's fault... But good luck.

When a man's six figure salary job is tied to the whims of a 17-18 year old kid, human nature is going to take over at times. The results of that will depend dramatically on the character of the people involved. Good and bad, on both sides. It's a screwed up system. Not sure what the answer is, not sure there is an answer...
