Has anyone seen the Fyffe High School (AL) Offense? They appear to be running a version of the Direct Snap DTDW...utilizing some unique O-Line concepts that feature 4-Man surfaces on either one side or both sides. Saw one of their tapes on youtube...I loved watching them. Seen them many times. In 2021 we played Geraldine HS, who essentially runs the same offense as Fyffe. We beat them. A few weeks later they beat Fyffe to end Fyffe's 51 game winning streak, which was the longest in the country at the time. We thought it was pretty cool. Sadly, that was the high point of our season, as we finished 5-5. But hey, we beat the team that beat Fyffe!

I think it's worse due to the transfer portal. It's having a trickle down effect to the lower college levels. I have a kid with the same issue right now, and it's frustrating...

The answer being that they would greatly simplify if they were at the HS level? Like Kirby Smart saying he believes living in Cover 3 is the best answer for [most anyways] coaches at the HS level? hey coach do you by chance have the link to this? For most situations I don't disagree with him tbh If you ever hear him speak at a conference you can tell he's oddly enthusiastic about C3. Just a few weeks ago, at the Alabama HS football coaches convention, he spent a good half of his time talking about it (interspersed with a rather ridiculous number of F bombs...).

Yeah, it was an amazing hard fought match! The commentator said it was the best match of the tournament. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a rematch next year, our team is junior heavy, and it sounded like y'alls was too. That freshman you guys had was tough to stop. Good luck against Flomaton tonight! We have three freshmen starters!! Won't be a rematch though. Ha. We move up to 5A. Oh wait, y'all most likely will also. Really dislike the 1.35 multiplier and competitive balance rule. We are should be a 2A school and will be 5A. Wouldn't be surprised to see both of us again in the finals. The freshman outside hitter who made all state, that is! Yeah, I don't know what our points look like, so we may move up as well. Personally I don't have a big problem with the multiplier as private schools have more control over their enrollment. So in theory we don't end up with as may 'skids' as public schools have... In theory. I do dislike the competitive balance rule only applying to private schools though, I feel like it should apply to all schools.

Our volleyball teams are about to play each other for the state title! Congrats to Westminster on winning the state title. We were three time defending champs. It was quite a match. Lost in 5 sets and the last set (played to 15), was tied 13-13. Lost 13-15. Was a great match. Yeah, it was an amazing hard fought match! The commentator said it was the best match of the tournament. One of the ball security coaching points I used to use with running backs was the phrase, "Rub the nipp1e off"... No teenage boy ever forgot the word nipp1e!

One that just occurred to me and would be very selfish: switch seasons with baseball. The players would be that much more mature, the end of the season could fall after exams, and in many places you'd have the only football in town at that time. You could play day games, wouldn't have to compete for officials, and wouldn't have to share a field with soccer (though you might with lacrosse). Not real fun up North. I'd rather start in the summer and finish when it was getting cold than start in snow and get nothing done for a couple weeks. For our situation I would say move soccer to spring and leave football as the only thing to do in fall. That's the way it is in Alabama, soccer in the spring. Specifically to keep the grass in good shape for football. Priorities and all...

We played Kerryon Johnson when he was in high school. Told the kicker, "Kick it to literally anyone but Kerryon". Where did he kick it? To Kerryon... It didn't go well for us.

For those of you who have started, are you having players get face to face in various drills, ie teaching players proper blocking technique? How is this being received? Yes, we have. Just having to make sure they have their masks on. The kids aren't concerned at all, pretty much what you'd expect from high school kids. Sometimes the they will grumble about having to wear the mask, and we just have to remind them that if they want to have a football season they'd better learn to deal with it.

I saw a video clip from Hoover’s workouts last week. Everything looked the same except the kids wore a pull up face covering over this face. That’s gotta he tough in that Alabama heat! I don't know when Hoover is practicing, but we're going at 7:30 in the morning to help with that. And honestly, today was the first hot morning we've had. It's been unseasonably cool in Alabama so far this summer.

Yep, in Alabama we're 4 weeks in. Tons of precautions, taking temperatures, wearing masks, no communal water, disinfecting everything, etc. A little weird but it's going well.

Congrats and good luck coach! Now that you're back in the AHSAA, if you guys are looking for a game next reclassification let us know! Westminster vs MA would be a good match up! All full right now, but next time, let’s see if we can make it happen. Sounds good. I'll mention it to our head coach for the next time around.

We won a game 59-34 this season. In the handshake line after the game their head coach was livid and acted like an idiot because we were 'throwing the ball' while up 24 in the 4th. In reality we were running zone triple option with an 8th grader at QB (with a screen pass as the 3rd phase of the option). An 8th grader. Not throwing bombs, throwing screens... All the while he keeps his stud running back in the entire game, risking an injury that would have ruined their entire season.
Learning to lose, and being a good example to your kids, is a highly underrated attribute in a coach...

Lol! We have seen some enormous offensive lines this year and we are extremely small on defense but have great speed and they don’t mash us. They try and run screens and sling it here and there it’s mind boggling This. We're small and quick. We won our region, but the second place team had 50+ pounds on us at every position. They had a 240 pound QB that could run, and for some reason they thought that dropping back and throwing the ball thirty something times would benefit them. LOL! Thanks guys!

I think most of us would be thrilled to be in that position...
As wingtol said, he's going to be the best dude no matter what. And it's not a case of a kid sitting around all summer doing nothing, there's no 'work ethic lesson' here. So, I wouldn't overthink it.

Seriously though...did someone misclick? How inexperienced are the two coaches that voted yes? Would be nice to know who they were just so we could go ahead and disregard any future opinions they may have in advance.

Maybe you define 'quality football' differently than I do, but I've been coaching for 14 years, so I don't see your point... Arizona's QB has 275 passing and 4TDs halfway through the 4th. I believe his point was that fans, accustomed to NFL stat line performances , may not be enamored with 60% completion rates and multiple interceptions. And yet this is not the NFL... Only 42% of D1 colleges had a completion percentage over 60% this past season. But I see your point. However I'm not sure stat lines directly affect the entertainment value of games per se. Of course I wouldn't say that I have a grasp of the socioeconomic factors that dictate the success of a football league either(Obviously not many people do, or one of these other leagues would still be around). If the games are entertaining (however you define that) and competitive, the marketing is good, and the business plan is solid... Well, then, maybe they'll succeed. I sure hope they do. After a weekend of games this seems to be the best chance for a 'minor league' football league to succeed that we've seen in a long time. And who really wants to be forced to watch basketball?

Both of those guys most definitely played quality football. I think it was pretty clear if you watched the games. Some of the other quarterbacks have not, but the offenses in the ongoing Salt Lake vs Arizona game have been fairly productive so far. As to whether their play will 'keep fans watching', I haven't a clue. The initial ratings have been very good, but if the quality of play is bad that obviously will not last. But I'd say that through week 1 the biggest quality of play issue is the offensive lines being dominated. "Quality football" is a subjective term. Football coaches would define "quality football" much differently than football fans. But I digress. I do agree that OL play has been bad. In the games I watched, there had to be well over double digits in sacks. Given the rules limiting the number of pass rushers and from where those pass rushers can come, that is definitely an area that needs to be addressed. Maybe you define 'quality football' differently than I do, but I've been coaching for 14 years, so I don't see your point... Arizona's QB has 275 passing and 4TDs halfway through the 4th.

Perez for Birmingham was 19-34 for 252. Good stats. Gilbert for Orlando was 15-25 for 227. Also very solid. Pretty efficient QB play by those guys. I don't think that is very "efficient" at all. What is that? About a 60% completion rate? That would be just average for a high school kid. Even if we can set that aside, "efficient" is not going to keep fans watching. How many TDs passes were thrown in the 3 games so far? And how many INTs? And how many of those TD passes were big plays? Both of those guys most definitely played quality football. I think it was pretty clear if you watched the games. Some of the other quarterbacks have not, but the offenses in the ongoing Salt Lake vs Arizona game have been fairly productive so far. As to whether their play will 'keep fans watching', I haven't a clue. The initial ratings have been very good, but if the quality of play is bad that obviously will not last. Compared to the XFL, the quality of play is much better. With that being said, they are going to need to find a way to encourage more downfield passing. So far, the QB play has been pretty bad. Does anyone have a link for AAF box scores and stats? I couldn't find anything on the AAF website, ESPN, or CBS Sports. Perez for Birmingham was 19-34 for 252. Good stats. Gilbert for Orlando was 15-25 for 227. Also very solid. Pretty efficient QB play by those guys.

Watching Memphis vs Birmingham right now, and Perez is looking really good at QB for the Ham. So far the O lines seem to be more of an issue than the QB play.

Spurrier should have micd his whole career. It’s great seeing him back on the sideline. It is, but how old is that guy now? He looks like he can barely walk on the sidelines anymore. The fact that still doesn't keep him off the sideline just makes him even more awesome. They said during the broadcast that Spurrier was coming off back surgery. Repair to 7 discs I believe they said. Thus the limping around.

Gilbert has looked pretty good running Spurrier's offense. The pace of the game is good to, things are moving quickly. And everyone being mic'ed up is cool. It's, all in all, better than I expected...

Congrats on your season coach!
Your year sounded a lot like ours. We knew coming into the season that we were probably going to be really good, and sure enough we were. We also fell short of the state championship, but could have easily won it (sometimes you need a break or two when you get deep in the playoffs).
We led the state in scoring in our classification, from wire to wire. Unlike you guys we tossed the ball around a pretty good bit. Our QB was an Alabama 3A Back of the Year finalist, threw for over 3K yards. We had 5 all-state players, a team record. We didn't have a region game closer than 30 points. We won out first region championship in school history. We had our first ever undefeated regular season.
All in all it was an amazing year that seemed like it just flew by. I've never been a part of one quite like it. Such a special group of guys! I've been a part of this program for 14 years, from the very first season of football, so to have that perspective on the progression from 1-9 seasons to being one of the top teams in the state has been a very special journey.

I've gone with a modified version of this. Here is my checklist. 1. Choose your QB, 1 OL, 1 Skill 2. Best 11 for defense 3. Fill out the offense Can you score like that? I’m a defensive guy but not being able to score points offensively sucks! Yep, we led the state in scoring using this same 'draft' system.

We've been two platoon the last two years. This year our roster, 9th-12th, was 43 kids. I was initially skeptical due to numbers, but it's been huge for us. Our kids are fresher than our opponents late in games, and we are able to out execute other teams and develop our players better than ever before, because of the additional reps and time to focus on fundamentals.
In 2016 we averaged scoring 19.9 points per game. In 2017, our first season two platooning, we averaged 31.5 ppg, and in 2018 44.8 ppg, leading the state in scoring in our classification. Now obviously there are a number of factors involved, but those I listed above, relating to two platooning, were certainly big factors.
Also, we got rid of JV entirely. Any ninth graders that weren't physically ready to at least be a second string guy played down with the junior high team. They were with us in the pre-season, went to games with us (and most still managed to get in some snaps here and there in blow out varsity games), and came back up to varsity full-time after the junior high season was over.
