So apparently we are in the sweet spot for the eclipse on Monday and instead of burning our little children's eyes out because the teachers can't supervise everyone and make sure their glasses are on they decided to cancel school and let the families handle it on their own. To be able to call school off for the day they had to classify it as a bad weather day which is a system wide shut down. No games or practice or any extra curricular activities. So yeah, no Monday practice and we play on Tuesday.

We had that day built into the calendar, it's a work day. And everyone is released by noon. All practices have to conclude by noon.

Argument was that if a kid looks at the sky it'll be lawsuit city so they are sending the kids home to let the parents worry about it. We are practicing at 6am before school that day.

We all know some dumbazz azzhole science teacher somewhere is gonna take the kids outside to see it, and not do it the proper way. Not saying closing school is the right solution (we will be in class), but you know there will be an idiot somewhere that gets a school sued.

Kids go outside for class changes to get to gym, weight lifting, AG, and The shop building, we also have 2 ten minute breaks in the day where the kids are outside, and at lunch they are mostly outside + they have to go outside to get to the cafeteria. But yes the math class is indoors. Whatever I get a half day of work and a full day of pay so I don't argue when they say go home early.

now we got one more thing to worry about every 50 years or so....good grief LOL we have bigger worries. 1. Our game is dying 2. Pensions are being taken away 3. Benefits being cut 4. Arduous paperwork and documentation is increasing on the teacher end The list could go on. Eclipses definitely have to be high on the list though.

We're right on the line of totality, so we're doing a half a day.
I'm giving them the day off. We've been practicing really well and getting after it. Hell its one day on something that doesn't happen that regular. If I played on Tuesday, I'd have practice in the morning

Literally some of the stupidest ish I have ever heard. The sun is bad to look at 365 days of the year, eclipse or not. By this logic schools should never be open due to the possibility of a student hurtig his eyes looking at the sun while on campus (and the subsequent lawsuit that would follow).

Came to post that our trainer, the same one who hung a giant concussion sign right at the entrance to the field, told us today he is recommending to the administration that we not be allowed to have practice during the eclipse.

our whole school is going out to see it, my wife's school is being real strict on the students watching it, I know some dumb crap will do something stupid somewhere, a lot of schools lawyers are saying send them home or don't take them out, I'll be in the ground the next time it happens so I am glad we get to see it,

We haven't started school yet. Monday practice concludes by noon so we oughta be ok. I'd cancel the eclipse if it screwed up football practice.

I totally understand the thought process here, but you do understand the science at work correct? Generally you can not look at the sun long enough to cause any damage. In the case of an eclipsed sun, you can. It is like those with the extremely rare disease where they are insensitive to pain. Very dangerous, because they could be causing a great deal of damage to their bodies without knowing it.

There are a number of schools that have cancelled classes today, but have allowed practices to take place either early in the morning, or in the evening. I wonder what the over/under is of knuckleheads that look at the sun? Or... what the over/under is of parents who sue schools that didn't cancel classes?

Point being, just don't look at it directly, it is bad. Same as the other times of the year. Kinda reminds me of this:

Don't every kids have a cell phone now a days? Tell them to use the "selfie" cam and sunglasses and they will get a good look in a safe way. Heck, they will probably even take a selfie with it. Luckily, I work off campus with a desk job so I don't have to deal with school politic stuff like that.

We've got the best of both worlds. The school is doing eclipse activities and having a viewing, but they're letting kids out if they want to go to the totality zone (we're in a 97% area). And we're just pushing the start of practice back an hour. Win win.
