We don't have hudl, we basically grade our own game on our own. We begin our meeting by discussing it and occasionally reviewing the film together if there is a major problem. This is more common earlier in the season. Then we begin to break down our opponent. I have the remote and call out down and distance to our dc then we watch the play and he draws up the blocking scheme. After that we make a master hit chart on the white board of every formation they ran and every play they ran out of it. We then get their formation all tendencies and favorite plays. We then look at the board and go over everything and look for auto checks and anything different or special we need to go over. Then we break them down by down and distance. Takes us 6 to 7 hours to do 2 films.

About 2.5 hours Tuesday and Wed. Warmups, Varsity O, JV D w/ Indy, some different group periods (inside run, 7 on 7, blitz period etc). Two special teams in the middle, then switch, varsity D, JV O. Conditioning. Mondays we are only on the field about 1.5 hrs. Review mistakes, put in game plan, etc... then watch film. Thursdays are about 1.5 hour walk through and special teams. Then JV game

We do both every day. No real emphasis. Time split pretty evenly each day.

I am not a HC but my weekend looks like this. Post game, help wash uniforms, watch a little film, DC and I do tackle chart. Go home, watch local tv high school football round up show. Usually go to bed about two. Saturday, up at 6 watch our film from the night before and grade the DL. Staff meeting at 9 Sat morning. Usually done by 3 or 4. Go home and get a nap. Then go out to eat with the fam. Sunday is church and family time. I am sure if I was DC or HC I would spend much more time on the weekend

As many have said run the scheme you know. The single most important thing IMO and I have never been a HC and have only been at 1 pretty good program in 12 years-is you have to get them in the weight room and to buy into your strength and conditioning program. Sorry for the run on sentence.

In NC they are mostly separate, however, if a private pays, and agrees to follow NCHSAA rules they are allowed to play in the public league. Not really a problem here.

In a perfect world we wouldn't have to share. Unfortunately we do. We are fortunate in that all our kids have weight lifting during the school day either 1st or 2nd block. Most of our basketball and track teams play football. They lift every day. Now on game days we do let them off light. But on practice days they lift just like everybody else. His position coach should not be encouraging him to skip track. He should be encouraging him to run track and lift before school. We would never try to keep a kid from playing another sport bc chances are after hs they are done. We would encourage him to make sacrifices for himself and the team. That is easier to do knowing he has weight lifting during the day however.

On defense we only gave up more than 21 twice. We run a spread offense and those two games we were on the field over 80 snaps a piece. In one of those we turned it over 7 times in the other 4 times I think. More snaps equals more points. (We did give up a non defensive td in both games too). Lost one 28 to 7. Won the other 33 to 28

One way I have heard of doing it is offense picks the qb and best linemen first. Next 11 picks go to the defense.

As others have said keep the routine the same. On Monday we are gonna watch film, correct mistakes, install the plan, and then walk through it, the same as the last 11 weeks. Etc. We bring a lot of JV up and use them as scouts. Since we only coach one side of the ball d coaches work with d scouts, o coaches work with o scouts. Gives us a chance to work with those young guys, and we really get a good look and tend to have good practices

How in the world do you have time for a cross country trip in the middle of the season? I don't have time to leave the county much less make a trip like that.

My opinion is its a team game. Lay off your dc. It will only cause problems on your staff. Set the example for the kids. You win or lose together. I am sure at some point you are gonna lose a game 6 to 0. Just get over it

Never been a HC but I'll pitch in what I think. I agree with a lot of what is said about leadership, kids playing for each other, coaches caring about kids, etc..... But one aspect I haven't heard mentioned is the preaching of physical play. We have beaten several teams with more talent than us, including one this week because they simply got tired of being hit. I contribute our ability to do this to 2 things. 1) the entire staff preaches physical play year round. 2) our weight program. By the way I am not talking about cheap shots or anything. Just good hard nosed football between the whistles.

In NC I get around 2500. Also, 10 percent per week in the playoffs and a small stipend for the summer. That's pretty high pay for assistants in NC as far as I can tell

I say you don't bring them up unless you are gonna play them a lot. But we also have a rule which allows them to play in JV game then dress for varsity games for emergency situations. An old coach once told me you would lose a game for every sophomore you start. He's been pretty close to being right
