The words Coach Saban said in that interview are verbatim what I think about and the way I carry myself. We went to state this year and lost. On the bus ride home I was already thinking about next season.....to the point that I let the seniors have the locker room alone for a while and brought the underclassmen up to the wt room for a a short meeting.
This was by far my most enjoyable year of coaching but before going to be every Friday I was already focused on the next opponent.

Wristbands with a Message is good. I just ordered 100 and they threw in another 100 for free if I paid shipping. 200 bands for $113.

YOu can win a title with any scheme. I think it depends more on the athletes you have and your ability to coach the heck out of the kids.
Now that being said I am a run the ball and play great D style coach. We run the ball 50+ times a game, throw it on average 10x. We control the clock, don't turn it over (we went 17 straight quarters at one point without a turnover) and stay patient. If you are playing great on D you can stay patient. Even if you are not playing great D you can stay patient as long as you are moving the ball and staying ahead of the back stick.

Shorts with pockets Boombah shoes Hoodie when weather gets cooler., followed by jacket and gloves. Pants when weather gets cooler. Floppy hat and sun block. Then I switch to ball cap and finally stocking cap when the weather turns colder. Whistle with pen. The cap is taped to the lanyard. Then I always have one. I prefer a red felt tip pen. Practice plan and scripts. Scout cards in binder. My wristwatch is digital so I have my stopwatch. I never bring my cell on the practice field. If there is a real emergency somebody can come get me.

We make a big deal out of rewarding kids who participate AND improve in the wt room. Shirts, awards, picture on the wall, names in the announcements. I've never done anything to publicly call a kid out. But behind the scenes? Absolutely I do.

Great answers. I would ask a lot of the same questions. What do you differently or better than others? Have you had to deal with this situation? How? What's your best 2 point play?

Several good ways to do things: We cram a lot of stuff into two hours. 5 min flexline 5 min competitive edge 5 min FG/PAT 10 min Special Teams/Indy Period We start special teams while OL guys start Indy and we keep those needed if anyone. That way extra guys are not standing around waiting. Finish up Indy 10-20 minutes D Indy/Skelly/Hull 20 min Team D 20 Team O 20
That's about 2 hours.

Do a lot of these questions and answers depend on the brand? Are some brands more durable than others?

We are in the process of purchasing new uniforms. I like the look of the Tackle Twill numbers compared to screen print.
My question is will tackle twill hold up? We replace our jerseys every five years (school uniform rotation). I don't want to replace or recondition jerseys every year or couple years.
Please advise.

I generally ignore fans when they start talking scheme. Especially if they start talking defense.

Agree 100%. I was flipping between that and the DIII game. That was a hard hitting game as well. But not on the same level as NDSU/GaSouthern obviously.

In MN we have to use a Wilson ball in the playoffs. Thus we use one all season. We've used the GST and the TDS. We used the GST this year. Probably will again next year.

We used to have a full staff meeting on Sundays. Now just the OL/DL coach, my DC, and I meet. The other coaches can come if they want. With Hudl we all have the video tagged and watched on Saturday. The DC and DB coach talk/text and get things figured out. The OL coach and I talk Sundays and we are good to go.

Previous header didn't do a banquet. We started doing a catered banquet five years ago. The caterer has ties to the school and keeps the meal at around $7-8/person so it's cheap. Parents have also said they prefer this to potluck. We eat, show a slide show/high light video, then recognize the underclassmen by having them stand and say a little (very quickly) about them. Then we bring the whole senior class up and talk (positive things) about each one. Then we give all the awards and call it a night. The idea is keep things positive, put closure on the season and build for next year.

In the big school that I was an assistant at they have grades 9-10 learn O and D. They will also play O and D in every single game. If they start offense in the first half, they go to D in the second half and vice versa.
Then when they get to varsity they work on one side of the ball all the time unless they are a stud then they play both ways.

I have one issue with "top 2" then "next 11" and that is some players are better suited physically or mentally for offense or defense.
While we all want mentally disciplined kids my DC would sooner take two sophs who will follow directions to a T and groom them into great players than take a stud who doesn't always follow directions on defense. His premise, and I agree, is that that stud will screw up at the wrong time if he is undisciplined or doesn't care as much about defense. So he would just assume "let" me keep him on offense if we were to two-platoon.
SO I think you take the kids who are the best fit for O or D and make it work. Certain kids fit the roll better, fit the scheme better etc.

Most coaches I know who 2-platoon start with the QB and one other key position on offense. Then the next 11 go to the defense.

The most dominant school in Minnesota is Eden Prairie. EP was 5A and won seven titles, most of them as of late. This year the MSHSL added a 6th class and moved EP (and others) up to that class. EP won number eight last weekend.
Now, EP did lose twice in the regular season this year, and there are couple other teams in the big school division (Wayzata, Cretin, and a couple others) who regularly compete with them. However EP is the 800 pound gorilla of MN high school football.

As far as the HC goes he's gotta have a vision that he believes in, and then be able to communicate and sell that vision.

I have quietly gone to leaders and asked what they thought but never a depth chart. It might be something like huddle leadership for a young QB for example. I would never let the kids develop a depth chart.

Our in season practices are 2 hours.
Our preseason practices are 2 hours, break, then two more hours.
We meet/lift for roughly 40 minutes before the first practice.

When guys like Saban or Meyer run a "tough camp" what are conditioning expectations? Do they run gassers?
Is there a need at the high school level for that kind of thing, if practice is done at a high tempo?

I was talking to a seasoned coach at a clinic this year and he said "back in the day" they would do iso holds with a partner to strengthen the neck and it helps reduce concussions. Now I have never heard of this. I have heard of it for strengthening the muscles of the neck. But last I checked having strong traps and muscles of the neck didn't help prevent a concussion. Maybe I am wrong. Anyone shed light on this one?

I have seen a college team at spring practice doing position specific drills along with dynamic. Running backs were carrying a ball for example. They also worked some 3/4 speed drops and reactions into LB and DB drills, with a ball thrown by the coach.
