I am coaching at a new school that is much more successful than my previous. One of the things I have noticed is our practice time is a strict 2 hours. My previous school was usually around 3. We have 100+ players and both offense and defense gets done efficiently.
Previous school, 70 players and evidently not as efficient. I always thought we practiced too long, but it wasn't my call.
How long do you normally practice?

3 hours is too long. The kids drag, the coaches drag, less and less gets done towards the end. I know when we've had long practices I hit a point at about 2 hours where I feel good, and at about 2:30 I feel like I've overdone it and I'm not enjoying myself anymore. It ties in with the kids losing energy, reps get sloppy but I start running out of energy to correct everything and it starts snowballing.
At The Zoo the 18 y/o HC scheduled two back-to-back practices, first WR/DB, then box players. It was 5 hours of coaching and the second half was BRUTAL. Coaches couldn't remember assignments, players got bored and took to entertaining themselves, not much got done.

LOL We go 2-2 1/2 hours like others I think after that you start to loose them.

Our in season practices are 2 hours.
Our preseason practices are 2 hours, break, then two more hours.
We meet/lift for roughly 40 minutes before the first practice.

We practice about 2 hours, even though technically we spend about 10 minutes on warm ups, 10 minutes on gassers at the end, and probably 10 minutes of talking in total. So we get about 1.5 hours of reps.

2 1/2 at the most. usually 2 though because of low numbers and we get lots of reps!

We go 2 hours on the field, but always have something after (lifting or film). Usually a ten minute walk through before we flex.

We practice until I get tired.
Seriously, and am posting this for umpteenth time - scientific studies show that you should not go past 2.5 hours.
If you do that during Two-a-days, you need minimum 3 hours recovery time in between.
If you have to have a 3-hour practice - maybe your coaching or organizational model is a problem, regardless of how many kids you have.

During two a days we practiced around 2 hours, broke for about 45 minutes to an hour then went for 2 more.
During the long practice which we just finished we went around 3 hours in one continuous practice which was pretty good and was the first day in pads and the second day I shortened it to around 2.5 hours, which was another fairly good day.
In-season I plan on practicing a little over 2 hours or just at 2 hours

I've heard two quotes I stick by: 1) Your practices should be roughly the same amount of time that your games are. Our games are just over 2 hours long; so our practices are just over 2 hours long.
2) Bobby Bowden said: "Any coach can practice for 3 hours; but it just takes a little organization and a smart coach, to fit a 3-hour practice into a 2-hour slot."

Long practices are terrible. 3 hrs is way too much. Like most said, ours are about 2 1/2. But we practice O and D each practice so that helps keep the tempo up.
If you play too long, law of diminishing marginal returns comes into effect. Coaches and players get more sluggish and the tempo falls off. And if ALL of your practices are that long it becomes a terrible thing for your program. The sluggish play from practice carries over into games and becomes contagious in everything you do. And you end up burning kids out and scaring away other kids that want to play but dont want it to consume their life.
Fast and efficient practices. Get it done and go home!

In MD, they just instituted a heat acclimization process for all schools where we only get 3 hours of practice time for the first 5 days. So, in order make up for the lost practices we would normally have during 2-a-days, we have to go 3 hrs. But I think we have done a good job of giving breaks every 20-25 minutes to alleviate and/or prevent boredness. It's not ideal, especially since we've ALWAYS been 2 hrs max.

We used to practice 2.5-3 hours. Got a segment timer and our practices go 2-2 hrs 15 min now. Truth is we used to waste so much time on the field.

Before school starts, it's about 3 hrs with 30 min-1 hr of meetings afterwards. We break that down into 1:10 each for offense and defense, 30 for special teams, and 5-10 for conditioning and speeches. We don't do 2 a days.
Once school starts, we cut it back to 2.5 hrs, with 30 min of that devoted to special teams and an hr each on offense and defense.
The day before a game is a 75-90 minute walkthrough in shirts and shorts.
Our practices are fairly slow paced and we have a lot of players going both ways. We do things old school and will frequently stop to correct and give lessons in technique that may last anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. This suits our HC's charismatic personality and helps our staff to establish a closer relationship with the players than on other teams I've been a part of. I imagine we could go super high tempo and just about double our reps, but it wouldn't mesh with our personality as a staff and would wear our kids out too fast.

I coached at a place back in 07 where we practiced from 2-7... the first hour or so was spent in the weightroom... then 4 hours on the field.
It was TERRIBLE!!!

We go 3 hours. 10 min warm up, 30 min special teams, 1 hour 5 min O, 1 hour 5 min D, 10 min conditioning.
For the guys that go less than 3 hours, are you doing ST, O, and D everyday? If so, what time do you spend on each?

With our numbers any longer and we would wear them out, increase injury risk. We do Offense and Defense every day. Mondays and Wednesdays we emphasize Defense. We spend 15 minutes on Kicking Game each practice.

we start the year at 2.5 hours strict..meaning we never go over..as the year progresses we cut back approx 20 min....for those of you that use a clock timer, we would just cut of 30 sec off each period..you never even notice it

On defensive days (when I set up the practice schedule) we are done in about 2 hours. Offensive days, they got 2 and a half.
What keeps me on schedule: 1) I give a water girl a practice schedule and a clock, and have her keep me on track. With two minutes left in any given period she gives a 2 minute warning; and when time is up, TIME IS UP. 2) I script everything and stick to the script, maybe once or twice I have them run something back, just to get a decent look at it but I hate letting team drag on.
