I think it's an old video from 2011 when they would've had the opportunity to repeat as national champions. But the message transcends when it was shot. It really explains what it's like to be a coach and how the most competitive ones are hard wired.
Especially when he was asked about satisfaction and happiness. It's nice to know that there are others out there that operate the same. Coaches are a different breed and it's nice to hear other coaches verify that. If for no other reason but to know that you're not alone in your thought process.
Here's the video...
He's just a fierce competitor. He's been a mentor of mine since I read his book "How Good Do You Want to Be" in 2004 when I finished student teaching and my first season coaching as a varsity assistant.
I was one year removed from college and I had always had aspirations to lead a football program someday. I just knew it would be a role I could be successful in with the passion I had.
His book reinforced a lot of the beliefs I had and still have. It helped to form my program philosophy early on, the foundation of which has not changed since I put it down in paper in 2004.

The words Coach Saban said in that interview are verbatim what I think about and the way I carry myself. We went to state this year and lost. On the bus ride home I was already thinking about next season.....to the point that I let the seniors have the locker room alone for a while and brought the underclassmen up to the wt room for a a short meeting.
This was by far my most enjoyable year of coaching but before going to be every Friday I was already focused on the next opponent.

For me, its gotten to the point to where I know longer enjoy victories as much bc of always thinking about the next one and ways to get better. Just hate losing. We won a second round playoff this year 28-13, and all I could think about was how poorly we had played on D and had trouble getting off the field on 3rd down.

We made the state title game this year and lost. I've never won a title, so I feel like some of this might be out of my category.
But honestly, I feel the same way.
Enjoyment in football coaching is, for me, like sand you can grab. You try to grab it and every single time you think you got all of it in your grasp, some of it slips away between your fingers.

CoachCB,
You and I are on the same wavelength.
I have won championships as a player and won a state title as an assistant coach. All of it just left me without fullfillment and it just adds to wanting more and more. It is almost like a drug really in alot of ways.
I believe if you do things the right way, treat kids with respect, make them better men then that is my personal definition of success in coaching/teaching. I used to be the worst husband/father after a loss. Just put my family thru hell some weekend and even weeks. But I am glad I am no longer trying to quench my thrist for success thru how a 16 year old kid performs on a Friday night.

I enjoyed the video but didn't necessarily agree with all of it..yes, i believe fun is winning but (probably why I am not saban) I also enjoy the relationships..the road to success, the grind, fun w/ other coaches...dang if all you enjoy is winning than I would be pretty miserable...I have also found that I HATE losing more than I LOVE winning

It is about relationships with players and fellow coaches and the "pursuit of excellence" whether we reach it in a given year or not. I have also found that I HATE losing more than I LOVE winning I hate losing. And I love not losing. ;D

Hate losing sums it up for me as well. Eternal optimist. I always think I can do it better.

I agree some with coach cb. As I become an older assistant, I love going to practice everyday and teaching and coaching the game. I love the relationship with my kids. I love working with our coaches in game prep. I expect to win. As I stated earlier. I despise losing. We work too hard to lose

the news people miss the boat on guys like Saban (and probably a lot of other coaches). They look at him and think "he must be miserable, He can't enjoy a win, he's never happy"
What they miss is the fact the he is in love with the process. He's happy trying to put the whole thing together. Being immersed in the struggle is what gives him (us) satisfaction and happiness.
After a loss we want to put it behind us as quickly as possible and improve and after a win we are on to the next challenge
Like the old saying " the journey is more exhilarating than the destination"

My OC from high school (and current QB coach under me) always used to and still says...
"WINNING DOESN'T SUCK!"

Indian1 hit it...I love the grind. The grind isn't a grind for me. Some guys love Fridays. I love waking up Saturday morning even though we won the night before and getting to work on "next." I love winning. Winning doesn't suck. Losing sucks.

i also love the grind
after the final game of the year, I need about a week away from the kids and school
after that I am ready to try and sprint the marathon that is football
football is no longer a game where you show up in august for team camp and its over in november
it is a non stop process where there really is no off season... workouts, spring ball, passing tourneys, camps, summer practice, it's all non stop

The great coaches at the highest levels hate to lose more than they love to win.
Nick's wife has said he derives not happiness from winning.

This is one of the healthiest threads I have ever read. I thought I was weird or even had a problem in that I really like winning but I am looking at the next opponent almost immediately. I love the grind. I really understood what Saban was saying and thought I was in the major minority. On the flip side, I really don't take losses so hard that I am miserable, although I hate losing. My mentor coach taught me the best lesson i think a head coach could learn...your season is always successful if you use football as a vehicle to teach life lessons. It's about the relationships with the kids and coaches. This may be different if I were a college coach but I'm not and I love teaching and coaching high school. Any psychological dysfunction in this? Lol.

Yeah sorry pnoty. Not sure what's going on. I checked into trying to get it from a number of places and it seems to have been taken down by ESPN. What a shame? That was a great video that I thought many coaches would benefit from hearing.
