Just curious if you guys do a football banquet and if you do anything special during this time other then honor players. Our head said he wanted to change it up a little this year. Just checking to see if you guys did anything out of norm that you thought was good.

SENIORS GET THEIR JERSEYS
We have a tradition where parents buy the seniors their jersey to keep for life. But it's done in a unique way...parents buy ANOTHER player's jersey, rather than their own. They present it to that young man at the banquet, as a gift. It's a way for families to honor one another, and for players to honor each other. Sometimes, a coach will buy a particular player's jersey and present it to him. We raise the rest of the money needed to make sure that everyone has a jersey. Parents can always buy their own son's if they want as well.
Every senior gets a jersey to have for life. The cool thing is that, when all those former players come back to watch games in the future, they always wear their old jerseys. It creates this great sense of "football family," and it really is a cool tradition.

Don't know if this is out of the norm or not, but we call up each senior and talk about them as a player and person on the team.
While accolades such as All Conference recognition are mentioned, the goal really is to talk about team contribution, what kind of practice player the athlete is, memorable quotes they may have said, etc.
One piece of feedback we've received is that when all is said and done, it's difficult to discern if the player that was just spoken about was a starter or special teamer or third stringer.

Previous header didn't do a banquet. We started doing a catered banquet five years ago. The caterer has ties to the school and keeps the meal at around $7-8/person so it's cheap. Parents have also said they prefer this to potluck. We eat, show a slide show/high light video, then recognize the underclassmen by having them stand and say a little (very quickly) about them. Then we bring the whole senior class up and talk (positive things) about each one. Then we give all the awards and call it a night. The idea is keep things positive, put closure on the season and build for next year.

Pretty much what groundchuck said, except ours is a pot luck. Our tradition is that the banquet is totally the senior parents responsibility once our AD picks the date. It pretty much runs itself at this point, but at least it's one less thing for the HC to have to worry about!
