Coaches,
Do any of you all 2 platoon with all 3 levels WITHOUT a separate 9th grade staff? We have all 3 levels and are looking for a way to practice as close to 2 platoon as possible, while giving the 9th grade enough attention. Is it possible?

We didn't do Varsity, and doubt I'd ever pulled the trigger on that at my last school....BUT, we did it come hell or high water at the 9th and JV levels this year..in games that is. Practice wise, each split time (kept things even more simple than planned) on Tues/Wednesday. I just wanted to get kids playing at those levels.
We didn't have a seperate 9th grade staff either. 7 of us...6 paid and one volunteer. Each just coached one side of the ball, so the young kids were able to get coached by all of us.

Wouldn't it be hard to tell if the 9th graders are better on one side of the ball? Wouldn't they benefit more by learning positions on both sides?

The best high school that I ever saw that did this had about 33+ kids on their freshmen and JV team and instead of two patooning they 3 teams White, Blue, and Gold, For offense and defense they would rotate by series each group. So Offense would be W,B,G and Defense Might be G,W,B and then repeat all game long. I don't remember what they did with special teams, but they had 3 guys getting reps and the lower levels and it got a lot of kids to play. Sometimes in the 4th quarter they would keep a certain group out there. They also seemed to make the 3 group equal.
