Hey guys,
Last year it was great to hang out with quite a few of you on here for the first time. Put some faces to some names. I'll be attending the AFCA convention in San Antonio January 9th - January 13th. We gotta get together again with everyone who is coming. Always a blast getting together with people from the board.
I know it is a little more than a month out, but let's try to nail down who is going to be in attendance, then see if we can arrange a time and place for us all to meet up and have some adult beverages.

Is this organization worth joining? Personally, I am not a "go to clinic to set around, get drunk and BS" guy, so I want to know if you get benefits from the AFCA that are truly helpful in growing as a coach.

I stopped going to the Glazier clinics because usually there is just a big party where guys are there to party and if they don't go to the meetings, it isn't a big deal because it only cost their staff $300 for the entire group. This is the national convention where the college conferences have their annual meetings, there are 20-30 college football coaches speaking over the week, and it has every GA and student assistant in the country trying to make contacts to find an actual job. Last year was my first year going and it was awesome. Going to go every year.
Well worth it in my opinion.

Well worth going. I dont get any ground-breaking information, but I always leave with a few new additions and wrinkles to what it is I do.
I'll be there, staying at the Embassy Suites off the Riverwalk. They have a free happy hour every evening from, i think, 5-7. In the past, they have been too slammed to check room keys and just give drinks to everyone. I'll be there, surrounded by free drinks. Anyone who wants to argue about football can find me there!!!

I had a great time last year and have booked my tickets and I must have seemed very enthusiastic...my wife is coming with too and wants to get involved with that portion of the convention. We will be at the Embassy suites as well. Glad I had the opportunity to meet so many last year. Getting in Friday and have to get back Tuesday night.

I went last year after having the same thoughts about the AFCA, and it was incredible. Your walking around running into some of the best coaches there are, and they're usually open to talking ball. I wound up sitting down 1 on 1 with the Minnesota QB coach getting a bunch of the drills he uses and picking his brain, found myself sitting next to the Duke DC during a talk, spent a long time talking to Tulsa's former head coach, and met UNT's OC while I was throwing away an energy drink. All of those guys were really nice guys who were willing to talk ball, along with the speakers being really solid, so I would say its well worth every penny. If I could only go to one clinic every year, hands down it would be the AFCA convention.

I have never went to the national convention, but I've had the exact opposite experience from coaches I've know that have went. Every time they talk about the national all they talk about is the parties they went to and how drunk they got. At Glaziers I've been able to learn a lot. Glaziers, like pretty much every other clinic, you get out of it what you put into it. It's not like you HAVE to go to the beer fests.

A couple of years ago, a college coach I know had just returned from the convention, and I asked how it was. He said, "Depressing...it was really depressing." I inquired as to why, and he said, "Because, everyone was looking for a job." My question is, as someone looking for one of those jobs (GA or the like), is it worth it to jump into a mess of others looking for the exact same thing? It's one thing for a D1 coach to take time to discuss Xs and Os, but it's a whole other matter to be hit up for employment. I would think that it'd be really uncomfortable for a lot of these guys. Then again, I guy I coached w/ went two years in a row, and he was able to wrangle a D1 GA position last year. Any thoughts on this?

A lot of guys do this, but I think it all depends on your approach. My approach, granted I've only been 1 year and havent got a college job, is just to talk to coaches and build connections at the convention. I think it would be difficult to just go around slingin resumes and land a job, but you can meet guys and keep in touch and maybe it turns into a job later. Besides, if you don't go make those connections there are guys like your buddy who are out there peddling. The whole vibe I got from the convention was that there a lot of college coaches that aren't necessarily the best coaches, but they can sell themselves. Seems to me like playing that game is part of the price of admission.

Seems to me like playing that game is part of the price of admission. If I want specific scheme and X's and O's information I am going to a Glazier or Nike Clinic. The AFCA Convention is great for networking and catching up with old friends. The general session and Masters of Coaching Sessions usually provide a lot of great information on program building. The best X's and O's are when you talk ball with guys one-on-one. It is a great experience to meet people and talk a little ball with some guys we see coaching on Saturdays. One funny story from about 10 years ago when a guy saw Bob Stoops peeing in a urinal in the bathroom of the hotel lobby and tried to shake his hand and give him a resume. Coach Stoops took the resume, dropped it in the urinal, and Lou Browned it. The young coach who looked like he wasn't old enough to shave stood their dumbfounded. Another coach told him very politely the timing probably wasn't the best. There are a lot of guys there slinging resumes, and many of the coaches there are trying to move up in the business. College is a little more cutthroat than high school coaching, especially at the lower levels. There are a lot of guys that would sell their own children to get a D-1 job. I may head up Saturday and Sunday to catch up with old friends.

Like I said in my previous post, I am not real big on going to a clinic to get away from the "old lady" and get hammered guy....I am pretty sure I have spilled more beer than most people have drank, so those days are long gone. I am into gathering info to be the best coach I can be. So I like to invest my time in pursuits that will have a payoff. Glazier Clinics if you plan your time productively are a great learning tool I believe, but to me getting with a coaching staff or coach at your level that you can get some 1 on 1 time with is invaluable.
Now, they way to maybe get that connection to meet with some coaches in that environment is to go to a clinic and introduce yourself after one of these cats gives a talk. I have had the pleasure of meeting with a Big 10 coach after one of his sessions at the Under Armour clinic one year. After his session, I went up and introduced myself and was making some small talk about some position specific stuff and he asked a couple of us standing there if we wanted to keep the conversation going. Hell yeah, so we all went to a side room and talked secondary stuff for about an hour and a half. We drew things up on the whiteboard, had some give and take and all went away with a ton of great info.
Also have met HS coaches that I wanted to talk with and made the commitment to go to there place and talk later in the year and gained a ton of knowledge that way.

Bottom line with the AFCA is that you're going to get what you're looking for there. There are tons of guys there to learn & talk ball. I'm sure there are plenty that are there to socialize and drink, but your gonna get out of it what you want to.

I go every year. Its a great time. I do go to some talks you can only walk the exhibit hall so many times LOL. Two years ago when it was in Indy I was having lunch with two prominent BCS coaches at Tilted Kilt and someone walked up to our table intorduced himself to on of the guys and handed him his resume and said that if he ever has a job open he would love to have an opportunity to talk to him about it. They coach just looked at him and said okay thanks. When the guy left the three of us had a good laugh about it as that's not how you go about getting a job coach Vint I was with coach stoops that day when the guy gave him the resume in the bathroom I was a lot younger then and he told me Never ever do that. Just some sad situations at the deal and how people go about trying to get jobs. I love to go to catch up with friends and hang out relax and get ready for the last month of recruiting. This year it looks like I may have a couple job interviews lined up so we will see how those go. I am up for anything in terms of meeting I will be there Saturday-Tuesday.

AFCA is great. My daugther has an event in Galveston during this year's event so not sure I"ll be able to make it down there. For those of you meeting up, be aware that when you are with Coach Vint things can get rather raucous. He's got fans everywhere. https://vine.co/v/eQtKJPQt3ja

I didn't realize they were going to take it so personal! They made an accusation that was something about drawing "upside down." I am still trying to figure out how that is possible... By the way, Huey, I still don't believe the story you told in Dallas last year at the Glazier Clinic.

Me and the Athletic Director will both be there. If any of you guys want to talk ball just let me know, twitter is probably the best way since I'll be out of town (I felt like a 23 year old even typing that). He calls our defense and I call the offense so plenty of discussion can be had on both sides of the ball.

Is anyone staying until Wedensday? Our staff is going Sat-Tues, but my return ticket isn't until Wednesday it was cheaper that way (GA stipend living and all). I was wondering if anyone would be willing to let a young coach sleep on their floor Tuesday night?
