I'm curious how other programs choose their captains. I don't just mean players vote or coaches decide. I'm wondering if there is a certain criteria you set ahead of time. A specific example... they have to attend a certain percentage of off season workouts, etc. I know the characteristics of what a captain should look like, I'm more concerned with off season workouts, meetings, and all that.
Reason being is that we have some talented seniors, but they aren't the hardest workers. We have some seniors that expect to be captains yet you rarely see them participating in off season workouts.

1) Apply and get accepted to the leadership counsel. This also means getting 2 letter of rec from non coaches and family members (teachers) 2) Complete the leadership counsel, we go through a book and have weekly meetings for 10 weeks. At a larger school I would break this up by grade and do different books each grade. 3) Be in good standing with the coach, (not an a-hole and no major rule violations) 4) Make 80% of all team activities (conditioning, summer lifting, fund raisers, etc) 5) Get elected (players and coaches vote)

When you say captain do you mean leaders or guy's that just walk out for coin toss?

We require athletes to attend 90% of offseason functions to be chosen as a Captain. All that do are voted on by the players and the players vote is discussed by the coaches. We have never not chosen a player that the players voted on but the number of total Captains has varied from year to year based on the number of quality leaders we feel are available.

We set an improvement goal for our kids. If they reach it, they are eligible to apply for captain status.
We set an attendance goal for the kids, if they reach it, they are eligible to apply for captain status.
If they get both, they obviously help their chances that much more.... we are talking only about being eligible to apply. I wont accept applications from those that don't meet those goals (aka expectations)
Its not perfect but at least they have to actually earn the consideration.

Could you give examples of what those goals would look like? I haven't heard of this before, but sounds intriguing.
