Awww I thought we were going to knock Tennessee with the classic "You can't spell Citrus without U-T" -- To comment on the original post, I think the best interpretation is what coachwilliams2 stated. My personal favorite is "The real shame is that 15 of the books haven't been colored yet"

Not necessarily saying Kiffin isn't among the best minds, but I believe Saban assistants get a lot of love mainly because they are always coaching the best players. Very true. I added Kiffin, however, because he knows how to use them.

Maybe talk to the kid 1-on-1 about it. Let him know your concerns, while still being respectful. Ask him if he could talk to his dad I think that's a losing proposition. I would consider doing and saying NOTHING! Not to your other coaches, the admin...no one. Let the parent talk himself out of the picture. People get tired of listening to a wind-bag. If he approaches you personally...smile, be as polite as you can, excuse yourself and get out of his way. Let him step on his own crank. You're probably right. Now that I've thought this over, it doesn't seem like it's bad enough to start a turfwar over

I'm still in high school, but I've coached MS kids at camps, and for some 7-on-7 stuff that's connected with our HS. My philosophy is to stay positive, and to not curse. It's not really in my personality to yell, and curse, and if I do, it's under my breath. They're still kids, and developing an opinion on playing the game, and I don't want playing football to be associated with feeling crappy about themselves. Football should still be fun at that edge. Now, that doesn't mean I don't correct mistakes, but I do so in a positive manner. That being said, I understand how different the high school level is, as I play at that level, and can take a good *ss chewing, but it's not the best way to motivate me. Coaching is teaching at the end of the day, and I can't imagine a good math teacher cursing a kid out because he can't figure out a proof, or calculus problem.

When it comes to running up the score I'm of the "If you want me to avoid it, stop me", so I have no problem with that. As for the picture: It was absolutely justified, and yeah it feels good, but in the long run being the bigger person is the better path imo. I don't have an issue with it, but it might not have been the best decision to make

Saban sets the tone for his program, and has a strict set of guidelines for his assistants. That being said, Saban knows what to look for when hiring assistants. He only surrounds himself with the cream of the crop. Saban is one of the best coaches in the nation, so I'm sure he has a wide range of knowledge on all positions. That doesn't mean he doesn't delegate responsibilities. He has an idea of what he wants for the offense, but lets Kiffin do his job. As it relates to high school, a good head coach should have an idea of what he wants for every position, and should have a general understanding of their responsibilities, but it doesn't mean they have to micromanage their assistants

I wasn't quite sure what board to put this in, so I'm posting it in the general thread, but if a mod feels it should be moved, the feel free. When you guys are analyzing film to learn more about the game (College/NFL teams, or even just watching HS teams to pick up new ideas) how do you guys watch it? What techniques do you guys use? What keys do you look for? I'm currently a high school student who wants to learn as much about the game as possible. I've heard of drawing up every play, and it can be difficult at times, but it is helping me grasp a better understanding. I'm currently still a bit of a rook when it comes to really breaking down/analyzing film, so no advice is too small! Are you talking about breaking down film to prep for an opponent, or watching games to pick up ideas and learn something? Because those are two totally different things. Watching games to pick up ideas, and learn something.

My junior year of high school we were the number eight seed in the playoffs facing the number one seed. Our HC was the typical gruff old coach, and even though it wasn't official; It was kind of unspoken that he was going to retire at the end of the year. He had a storied career (Five state titles in about 13 years). We were playing without out best player (WR/DB). They had two D1 Wide receivers that we're 6'2/6'3. It was a defensive battle. Back and forth the whole game. Now, I love offense, but I played nose, so I was pretty proud of our D. The score was 3-3 going into the fourth quarter, and they scored a long TD on a blown coverage in the middle of the fourth, and with about a minute left we were driving, but we stalled on the 20-ish, and lost 10-3. Our team was mostly seniors, and our whole team was very tight. As we were walking to the bus you could just kind of see it in everyone's eyes the disbelief that it was over. The people we spent the last 3-4 years with, and in some cases last 9-10. It was never going to be the same, so on a football level, and a personal level it's the hardest loss I've ever taken.

Team meals even after the camp. A few times during the week during summer, and at least once a week during the season (depending on budget of course). There's something about the dinner table that just brings people together (Especially the linemen). You said that alot of your players have bad home lives, so some may not even have experienced a family meal, which is kind of the environment you should make it.

My freshman year the first day of practice one of our coaches was like 70 (tons of football knowledge, but pretty senile). Told us: "If you find yourself wondering if you have practice on any given day ask yourself: Does a wild bear sh!t in the woods?"

Gotta find coaches with passion. Kids can sense when a coach doesn't really care. Surrounding yourself with good assistants is just as important as being a good coach yourself.
And regarding obsession; here's my thought: You don't have to be obsessed to be good at something, but you do have to be obsessed to be great.

Hello, I'm currently a high school student with a passion for football. I definitely want to coach after I'm done playing. I was wondering what I should be doing now, and what I can do in college to prepare myself for a career in coaching.
