Looking for some ideas of team building things to do with the kids that they won't find cheesy. A large amount of our team comes from lower class families, they have it pretty hard at home and they don't do well in school. Lots of excuses but some are certainly somewhat warranted. About a month ago I held a player meeting with the kids, in that meeting I handed out a sheet of paper for the kids to write down their goals for the upcoming season both individual and team goals, I also had an area where I gave them the option of writing down what they would change with our program. After going through all 50 of the sheets recently, there were a few that said let us the kids make some of the decisions about pregame meals, jerseys, shirts, etc. Some that said "We want to win more" If only it were that easy...
But the one that struck the biggest chord with me and was on about 60-70% of the papers was that it doesn't feel like a team environment and that they want it to feel like they are all one and not 10 different individual clicks of 5 that constantly fight at school, practice and outside of school.
I'm interested in hearing some thoughts or suggestions on things we can do to get them to come together as one and not just talk about it being a team but it actually being a TEAM.
The only thing I have lined up so far is instead of going to a team camp this year we're taking them to a local military base to stay for 3 days. We'll be doing football activities and the military guys are going to take them through some training type exercises but other then that I don't have many ideas.
Thanks!
