Hey everyone, I have a question for you all.. In your opinion, who are some of the BEST *ACTIVE* high school football coaches in your state and why? Most of us probably know the best coaches in our own respective state but I thought it would be interesting to see who others name in nearby states who are still coaching. I know for our program, I am always searching out successful coaches to not only talk X & O's but program building stuff as well. I will include Ohio and Michigan in my response since I have spent 10 years coaching in Ohio and this past season as the Head Coach at a school in Michigan...
Ohio Mike Vicars / Tim Spiess- Swanton High School Tim Goodwin- Marion Local Greg Dempsey - Toledo Central Catholic Chip Otten (John Reed too RIP)- Coldwater Steve Specht- St. Xavier Steve Channel- Miamisburg
Michigan
John Herrington- Farmington Hills Harrison (which is closing at the end of next year) Tom Mach- Detroit Catholic Central Ralph Munger- Rockford John Shillito- Zeeland West Jack Giarmo- Monroe SMCC
Personally I would like to know who the best Wing-T coaches are in your state or successful coaches at small programs...looking forward to your responses

To Michigan I would add Mike Giannone who just left Macomb Dakota for Warren De La Salle. His DC and the new head man at Dakota is Greg Baur, the best coach I have been around period, we will see how he does as HC.
Bob Lantzy who just got back into the game. He doesn't have the state titles but has made several appearances and is a great coach.
Both of the above respectively built their programs from nothing.

I'm not even going to pretend to try to name all of the guys in Virginia. I'll just name a couple that immediately come to mind:
Mike Smith (Hampton HS) has 400+ wins and 12 state championships.
Bill Dee- Just hired at Oscar Smith HS after several years in college. Built Phoebus HS from nothing to a state power, Four state championships (I'm biased. I've known Bill since 1967 and coached with him for 20 years).

He was at Utica Eisenhower for the longest time. He retired a few years back (my understanding is that the powers that be wanted a change after 30ish years and forced him out). He is heading into his first season as the HC at Rochester Stoney Creek. That MAC Red conference has to be the best in the state. All schools have great coaches. The CHSL second would be a close second or even a tie in my opinion. Those conferences are both loaded with some of the best coaches I'm the state. Our HC at Clarkston is Kurt Richardson. He has been here for over 25 years and finally won back to back state titles in 2013 and 14. He's no slouch either.

Don't know how many NC guys on this board, but Bob Lewis at Clinton comes to my mind. A lot of the big time "legends" have hung it up here in the past 5 years or so

From Ohio, Brian White at Hilliard Davidson. To have two state titles having to compete against the powerhouses in division one is incredible. Gets more out of his kids than anyone I've seen.

As far as wing-t coach's in washington
Butch Gincaroff at Bellevue is the big name but in a bit of hot water as of late
Sid Otten of Tumwater is the states winingest coach and runs the wing-t I have never coached 2a but recently joined a staff that lost to them in the semis last year so it's the 1st I've seen film of his team.
Randy Davis of Cascade Christian is always in at least the semi finals in 1a. His oc played at plu where they picked up some of the Georgetown orange formation stuff and do some interesting things on offense.
I can't think of any 4a teams that are very good running wing-t at this point mostly spread at the 4a level.

My boss, Randy Blankenship, is a pretty big deal in the CA Wing-T community. He spoke at the national Wing-T dealie in Pittsburgh this year.

Coach Lewis at Clinton is one of the best. And several of the legends have hung it up. Tom Brown is back in action at E Burke. I think he is now the winningest coach in NC. You would be tough to find anyone better than Paul Hoggard at Edenton Holmes. There are many many good coaches in NC. But as mentioned not many legends are left and the good younger guys haven't been around long enough to be legends yet.

I hardly know the names of any coaches outside of our district lol Only reason I know of others is because my coaching friends know them and bring them up. I'm not social by nature, so I try to make sure I've got some social butterfly friends.

So,Eli,Es people don't believe I am a teacher and a football coach. I can be soft spoken at times and am not always outgoing. When on the football field though, I hit a switch. To the point, only reason I know the best coaches in Michigan is because I played against them and coached against them. Left the state for five years but the names are the same at all the major schools.

The D1 state champions in Michigan this year (Romeo) actually had co-head coaches and have for a while. That team is always super tough but those guys seem to do more with less on a regular basis.

Herron is definitely (one of) the best in the state of GA BUT of course I may be a little bias on that one.
Jess Simpson is doing an amazing job at Buford. He has a dynasty down there. Ronnie Jones is at Westfield in GISA but he's another great coach who also happens to be a wing-t guy.

I hardly know the names of any coaches outside of our district lol Yeah, that's why I only named a couple of guys who I know first hand. I also don't want to risk pi$$ing people off by leaving them off the list. Here's a guy back in PA: Jack Henzes (Dunmore) 300+ wins.

Here in Iowa these are the guys I look up to. Ed Thomas, Aplington, Parkersburg Many of you may have heard Coach Thomas's story a few years back. He was a coaching legend who pumped out winning team after winning team. Currently sits like 6th in the state in career wins. It's not so much about what he did on the field though that got me to respect him as a person. He helped turn a town around after it had been completely devastated by a tornado. Then a short time after was tragically shot to death by a former player at a morning lifting session. If you haven't had a chance to read the book or listen to the audio book I highly suggest doing so. It will give you a whole new perspective on coaching. www.amazon.com/Sacred-Acre-Ed-Thomas-Story/dp/0310318971Randy Hinkel, Madrid Coach Hinkel is 4th on the all time list but once again it's about what this guy did off the field more so then on. He's a hell of a coach and to get the talent out of the kids he has considering the size, it's remarkable. It was much to my surprise when I saw the job at Madrid was open early last summer. I knew it would have been much bigger news that Randy had retired then it was so I figured something was up but applied for he job anyway. I got called in for an interview and absolutely fell in the love with what Randy had built. What seemed too good to be true, was. Randy retired from teaching so in order to continue coaching he had to be re-hired. Legally they have to interview so many and I just happened to be one of them. It was a good experience for me regardless. Sadly, Randy passed away of a massive heart attack just 6 months after retiring from teaching this year. Gone way too soon but he'll forever go down in Iowa coaching history in my book. Jerry Pezzetti I had the opportunity to coach on Jerry's staff at Ankeny Centennial for a few short years. Coach Pezzetti is 2nd or 3rd all time in career wins and has turned Ankeny into a 4A powerhouse year after year. He now co-head coaches with his son Ryan Pezzetti and it's remarkable that he still gets out there and coached. He's getting up there in age, and sure doesn't say or do a whole lot schematically anymore but that doesn't take away from the success he has built from the ground up. Gary Swenson, West Des Moines Valley Personally I think Coach Swenson is the best in the state right now. It would be between him and West Des Moines Downling's Head Coach. Top 6 all time in wins, ton of state championships in class 4A and he's singly handily turned the Valley program into one of the top 3 in the state. X's and O's genius and genuinely a great guy.

Indiana
Eric Moore - Center Grove: develops players as well as anyone Kyle Ralph - New Palestine: Specht (St Xavier Cincy) disciple that has crushed almost everyone in his first couple of years. He's about as hot as it gets. Gregg Doyel of the Indy Star has written at least 2 articles about how Ralph is the next "Malzahn" HS to college type guy.
