Coaches,
At the end of every season on equipment day sign in I have our players vote for out team superlatives to hand out at our banquet. I have been using the same ones for the past 5 years and would like to see what others use. Here is what we currently do:
OL of the Year DL of the Year Offensive Back of the Year (anyone not a lineman) Defensive Back of the Year (anyone not a lineman) Special Teams Player of the Year Scout Team Player of the Year Key Newcomer of the Year (for a younger starter) Team MVP

Instead of Back of the year it should be skill player! LOL!! It takes no skill to play lineman!

We have a most improved and most valuable for every position group, both JV and varsity. We also have an O, D and ST MVP.
And we have a coaches award, which is basically our most coachable senior.
We don't have the players vote on it, so we get together as a staff one day and just hash out who is getting what.

We also do a "Coaches Award" to the kid who mabye isn't that great by played hard, didn't complain, probably worked his a$$ off in the off-season and beat himself up at practice for 6 years just to start one way...that kid gets recognized.

We give out a ton, and I love it........
Offensive
-Back -Lineman -Rec.
Defense
-Lineman -Linebacker -DB
-Rookie of the year -Scout player of the year -Special Teams player of the year -Most tackles
JV:
-O MVP -D MVP
-1,000 yard rushing, passing, receiving balls
-All conference
-Capitan awards
-Letters and numerals for letterman jackets
-Pride Award (coaches' vote)
-2 memorial awards (both for people close to the program who died in season)
Weekly awards:
(every week we give awards for the previous game, and we have a special item that player gets to keep in his locker......hit of the week is a 2 pound sledge, things like that.....kid with the most wins gets the item at the banquet)
-Offensive player -Defensive player -Special Team player -Defensive Lineman -Offensive Lineman -Catch of the week -Hit of the week -Big play of the week -Fake out of the week -Clean up of the week -Tough as Nails award -12th man -Scout of the week -Energizer
My first thought (like I am sure someone reading this is thinking) is that this is too much.......I now believe that it makes our program better. If you can generate recognition for more people, then you get more buy in.
Back in the early 2000's (before our staff cemented as it is now) we had 14-15 varsity caliber players every year. One injury, and we were sunk.
Now, we have almost 20 varsity contributors, and it makes a huge difference.
Things like more awards, I feel, help that.
If we just gave an offensive and defensive MVP, the kids who ALWAYS get attention would get more.......the way we do it now, the WR who is NOT our offensive MVP can get recognition for all the blocking he did during the year.

those are good, but I only had 11 players, that would be over half the team, when I coached basketball I gave offensive player of the year and defensive player of the year team voted on it, in football, I have my ag teacher cut old helmets in half, have him make plaques and put those on there and give it to my seniors, that is it, I don't do individuals, never have

At one school I coached at we gave a Gatorade award. It went to the kid who spent the most time in the training room.

Not a football one, but this one always made me laugh: my buddy as the Head Baseball Coach at our school gave the "Ernie Pantuso Award" ==> kid hit by the most pitches during the season.

We don't give out awards at the banquet voted on by kids or coaches. Too may ways for a parent to take offense. We talk about team stuff, announce every kid for their letter to certificate, and then talk about local or state awards (All County, All Region, All State)...etc.
We recognize the captains and our seniors and we call it a year. BY FAR the best way I have seen it done. Eliminates the BS.

We recognize every kid and say a little something about them when they get the team plaque. As for awards, we don't give any. If you are all state you get a plaque and we recognize them but other than that nothing.

"That Guy" who would loves football so much he would run through a brick wall just for the fun of it. "That Guy" who isn't that talented but everyone loves and fears because he's a little crazy. I got the idea from "The Replacements" Danny the middle linebacker. It has turned into the whole programs favorite award.
