Ive been looking over my last few years as a coach, and ive noticed that my practices dont really change (the ones i can plan, defensive practices.) they are pretty much all the same - the drills will change, but the order in which periods happen, and the time limits are pretty much the same.
should a practice layout change from day-to-day, week-to-week?

Our practice plans/lay outs don't change. Monday install/ intro and perimeter run and quick passing game. Tuesday inside run and play action. Wednesday pass draw screen 2 min O. Thursday review/walk thru.
Offensively we have Indy, mesh, group, and team periods. We have been using the same layout for at least 20 years now...

Ours don't change. I like having a routine.

I write our defensive practice schedule (Wednesday) from a template Word document. Most weeks all I do is change the date.

The last part of our staff meeting (after the game plan has been developed) is taking our 4 practice templates (one for each day of the week), and adding in what we need to.....
So, if Jet is going to be big in a given week, we make that section titled "O Indy" a Jet period.
OL wise we are consistent......our scheme doesn't change week to week, and I abhor adding new blocking schemes, so we never do that. After Monday (which is all recognition), it is all about maintaining for us. Did we work doubles? Check. Did we work down blocks and kick outs? Check. Did we work pass pro fundis? Check.

Weekly we have a schedule for Mon, Tues, Wed etc. Each day is slightly different.
But normally things out of my control are injected into the situation and *poof* we are flying by the seat of our pants. Sometimes I wonder why I plan at all- yesterday we're scheduled to use the stadium 3-5 for our pre-game- AD informs me that afternoon "Oh yeah, Soccer has moved the JV match to 4:30 so you guys have to be off by 4..." Are you kidding me? We are trying to win a game today! FML

Not really. A little time may be borrowed from one session to extend another, but there is never a radical departure from the schedule. You just have to make sure you emphasize different aspects of the game based on your opponents. Other than that, SSDD.

Our layout is always about the same week to week. Monday of week 2 looks a lot like Monday of week 9.
Now of course there are some minor tweaks put in from time to time, and of course everyone does a little different during their individual time as well.
