I know middle school and pop warner programs do tryouts. However, once they get to high school this stops.
Do you have tryouts? With the integrity of football in jeopardy with concussions, should we have tryouts for safety reasons.
Curious what other schools do and looking for ideas especially since we have a few kids (1-4) that could get hurt if they played in a game.

Coaches,
I have only one on campus coach this year. The rest of the coaches are off campus. How many coaches do you have on staff that are teacher? What time do you start practice?

Slacks, a button up, and dress shoes. Game days I wear coaching polos. I never wear jeans or tennis shoes. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. What kind of slacks??

A guy I work with does one thing really well and that's run his meetings by using a hudl playlist. He would take the stuff you have from your scrimmage film and match it to film of your teams in the past doing it. So you can compare and contrast and they will see what it should look like. So for us what he does is he puts the scout clips from previous games on there of their top plays then he cuts in reps of us playing the same plays at practice. Goes over the adjustments and critiques technique. I sat in on one of his meetings last year and I thought this was one of the best things he does. I also agree getting mass reps is huge for us. Something we doing in pass coverage to speed things up instead of running routes our "receivers" point out where they are going. Vert, in, out, you can add body movements like turning around for a hitch. (have them keep their hands up so you can tell if your guys communicated and reacted right.) You can go half line if you only have one coach and need to see everyone work. you can do this at different tempos too (walk thru, half speed, full speed) and use it to teach them or rep them. One tip have your "receivers pump their arms for a second or two then point. If they point right away its often a quicker trigger then a route would be.) Can you PM about this? I love hudl andn sounds interesting.

Common sense is the main thing. Death in the family we excuse the kid. Hospital or emergency situation we excuse the kid. Our rule is it is excused but you still sit the first quarter so that the kid that practiced that day gets to play. We then play the kid that missed starting in the 2nd quarter. Builds depth and makes you pay attention to the back up a little more during practice because you never know when a situation will happen. That is season practice. Summer workouts are the same. Death in family or divorced situation (have a kid going through that right now) you do what you have to do to take care of your family but if you miss because of anything else we tell the kid he can be on the team. We give each kid 3 misses after that we start questioning his work ethic and character. If a kid misses more than 3 we tell him he is still part of the team. He can participate in all team functions once the season starts. He will be a scout team player and hold dummies. We make sure all our kids know this before summer workouts start. I have the feeling that the kid that doesn't workout and participate in the summer he will let you down some time in the season so put your time into someone else. I believe in doing things my way because if I get fired I can say I did it in a way I thought was right. Funny thing people may say I'm archaic but I don't really care. Our numbers are sky high for a class A school and kids know the best players that work hard get on the field. QB missed practice the first week of the playoffs last year. Didn't play him. I still dressed him because if we got in touble I was going to put him in and not punish the team or the seniors for his actions. Had a plan to run him later if he had to go in. Many people hollering to play the QB as the game went on and pulled away in the 4th quarter. We won by 28 with a back up. People thought we should have won by more. Still stuck to my rules but wasn't stupid. You have to know the situation. I as far as summer I don't bend. They don't come they don't play but they are still on the team. I 100% agree with you.

I like having clear rules where a coach doesnt have to be a judge. What if a kid misses because he has a personal trainer? in my opinion, it is the same thing.

I agree with everybody and value all your ideas. I was lucky to be be part of a transition where we took over a losing program, and the biggest issue was attendance. Now, I have taken over the same type of program. The make sports teams in the school that are successful are the ones that hold kids accountable. I saw the LAX program lose every game because star players got special treatment, and were able to show up late, miss practice, etc. I dont think it sends a clear message letting a kid show up late. When does the negotiations end with parents?

So I started this original post. The kid wants to come to the last 1/4 of practice. I just think this sets a bad precedent and arranging deals with kids.

A player. Missing all summer while your staff and players make sacrifices to be there all summer is special treatment.

True but you can deny him special treatment over the summer.

Do you guys let kids miss all summer and play in fall? I know broad question but just curious what different program philosophies and rules are.

Guys,
Do you take time to teach guys how to be a scout player? We had trouble in spring ball and wonder if anybody had expectations they teach kids.
Thanks!

I guess it is a compliment to the program when a kid (never played before) comes out junior or senior year. Do you ever have any success with guys like this?

We 7 on 7 with helmets only. Soft or real helmets? What state are you in?

Does your state mandate you wear these? Do you do 7 on 7 without them? We've never worn helmets in a 7 on 7. I have no idea how much "soft" helmets cost but unless I was flush with cash I wouldn't spend money on them for a few glorified summer practices. So do you still do 7 on 7?

What do you use for summer during non contact practices? Looking for hand shields or anything similar to this.
