Does your state mandate you wear these?
Do you do 7 on 7 without them?

Our state does not mandate them, we wear them. They don't do much

Does your state mandate you wear these? Do you do 7 on 7 without them? We've never worn helmets in a 7 on 7. I have no idea how much "soft" helmets cost but unless I was flush with cash I wouldn't spend money on them for a few glorified summer practices.

I have seen teams wear soft padding over their hard helmet. If you look at the 3:00 mark they are wearing them

We wear them for 2 reasons: 1) had a parent generously offer to buy them for the team. 2) if it makes our players even a little safer, I'm all for it

I have a buddy I went to college with who became a sales guy for a major equipment company, and I have asked about these more than once. Said they have done tons of research, blah, blah, blah. His answer has always been that they are totally useless, but if you think they help with parent/admin PR and have the cash buy them.

They're a CYA for parents/admin/community and they are very expensive.
I don't understand wearing real helmets and nothing else.... Seems to be more dangerous than wearing nothing because you can get that helmet ram right into someone's shoulder that isn't padded or thigh or any other body part that is usually padded.

Once you get one with a broken jaw, you'll understand real helmet vs no helmet. Been there, done that, don't want that t-shirt again.

We went to one tourney with real helmets, left with two players hurt, one with a concussion and one with a deep thigh bruise that took 3 weeks for the player to recover from; both as a result of kids using the helmets as a battering ram. Never again will we enter one of those.

i personally think it is safest with nothing at all
kids play insane with a helmet on, they act like they can't get hurt
no one ever got hurt playing playground football when i grew up we play touch or flag in PE class all day long and no one gets hurt or knocked around ... and i have some kids who go at it like it is the super bowl
