Coaches,
Do you have the kids who all of a sudden get hurt during the game. They could most likely finish the game but decide to check themselves out mentally and claim they are hurt.
Is this mental toughness? I have a FB who steals the reps all week and has gotten hurt in the 3rd quarter for the past 3 weeks. A lineman who got checked by the trainer and was fine but tapped himself out.
Do these problems exist everywhere?

Coaches,
What is your policy on players practicing and playing on friday. We had two of our best players sit out today from practice and it spread like cancer. By the end of practice three other kids were suddenly hurt. I guess my questions are:
- What is policy on kids practicing hurt? We make them dress with pads and helmets
- If they practice hurt do they play?
My worry is other kids see players getting special treatment and then also suddenly are hurt.
Looking for advice to get rid of the "I don't want to practice" syndrome.

Coaches,
Do any of you have a template or way you like to take stats on Friday nights for offensive? This way we know immediately after the game the stats for player and team.

Coaches,
I want to hold kids accountable for penalties. Do you guys punish or have gassers for penalties on Monday? Etc? How do you handle it?

Coaches,
I'm hosting a 4 team scrimmage next week and want to make sure all players (1's-3s) get reps to prepare for the season.
Does anybody have a format they suggest or like where you play each team once?

I have taken over a program that has not won a league game in two years. We have gotten completely strong in the weight room in the off season. We recently went to a contact camp and were getting beaten up and thrown around by guys who were smaller and weaker than us.
I guess my question is.. how do you coaches teach and coach to be physical without getting hurt during practice?

Coaches,
What is your philosophy in players wearing flashy stuff. I mean one sleeves (Reggie Bush), visors, bandanas, etc? Do you think it takes away from the team? Or is it ok for kids to have some sort of identity?

Coaches,
I'm first year coach at a school that is less than 10 yrs old. They do not have a winning tradition at the school. The program has not won a league game in 2 years. However, this year I got the most players on varsity (50) in school history. We had our first 7 on 7 game last night and got pushed around. We lack mental toughness and leadership. When something goes wrong we mentally check out. Also, we have no leadership to pick up the players morale and sense of competition.
Question: Any ideas during practice to build mental toughness? Any coaches taken over a losing program and made some dramatic changes for the better? Thanks in advance!

Coaches,
I coach in CA so we can basically do what we want. I really think there is not right answer to this: Morning - we lose summer school kids Afternoon- we lose club and baseball and club basketball guys
What are all your thoughts on the summer? I make it mandatory and usually get buy in from kids. They only miss for summer school or if they are sick, etc. So let me ask you guys some questions I have
Summer - what is an an acceptable absence? Can they miss for vacation? How many practices is acceptable to miss?
Once mid August hits we do not allow missed practices but looking to see how lenient you all are in the summer when it is technically volunteer.
Thanks in advance

I'm in my 2nd year of coaching a Varsity program. I had 8 total coaches last year and three were left over from the old HC. I let three guys go after the season because they were not buy-in guys. We went into Spring Ball with 5 coaches all buying into my philosophy and vision. Yesterday one of my coaches got pink slipped and then offered a job in another district 30 mins away. His bell schedule is off from ours so he decided he would not be able to give 100% commitment to the program with this new job. Therefore, we currently have four coaches on Varsity staff.
Do I stick with four quality coaches who are buy-in guys? Do I try to hire a 5ht coach this late in this season? I have a potential 5th coach but it is a friend of the assistant so do I take his word?
Is 4 quality better than 5 and not having trust in the 5th coach a good idea?
Thoughts or advice?

I'm reading the Delaware Wing T book by Tubby Raymond. There is two sample letters the coaches give to players during summer and before season.
Any coach out there done this before? Any samples you would be willing to share?

Guys,
We are trying to go away from straight conditioning this year. We will be going full speed all practice to stimulate game like atmosphere. However, I want conditioning ideas for players who need to be discipline. This discipline could include and not limited to:
Late to practice or meeting Loafing Lack of Effort Missed assignment Lack of concentration
We currently have Big Four (400 yards- bear crawl, sprint backwards, sprint and leap frog)
When players hear "big four" they cringe knowing they did something wrong. I want to utilize this idea and use other forms of discipline ideas. I have heard of "suicides" and "dirty dozens" and just curious if any coaches had any other forms of punishment concepts or methods they swear by. Thanks in advance.

Coaches,
I'm trying to gain ideas of what your week look likes in regards to film and pre-routine for fridays.
Film: We try to watch film during lunch but only watch minimal film of opponents (15-20 mins) during the week. We do watch our game 2 hours on Saturdays.
What do you guys do to watch opponents?
Friday: Bell rings at 3 and kids have to be in locker room at 4pm. We do quick walk thru and then get ready.
I want kids to get mentally ready when bell rings. We do awards on Thursday and was thinking of changing this to friday.
What do your fridays look like?
Thanks in advance.

We had a meeting on a Friday where I told him about my expectations for him in the program. He got caught selling stolen items from Best Buy the following days so it made my decision really easy.

Coaches,
Part of our job is helping kids stay out of trouble and become better men after they leave our program. I'm in the process of changing the culture of our program and getting rid of the bad apples. Kids are starting to buy in and our gain in strength is remarkable. I had a student (Junior) come talk with me today at lunch. This kid is a notorious bad kid at school: smokes, gets in fights and was recently caught eating pot brownies art school. He has a close friend on the team who is one of our biggest challenges but is starting to turn it around. This kid informed me that he wants to attend our weight program and try out for football next year. He said he believes football will change him and help get his life together from the bad crowd at school.
Here is my question to you coaches. At what point do we let a kid like this try out? He currently got into a fight with one of our players during the summer who will be a captain on the team. Is this disrespectful to my Seniors (current Juniors) who have busted there a$$ for three years for the program? Is the program more important that helping this kid who is reaching out? Finally, at what point do we turn down kids to play knowing they will ruin the image of the program?
Thanks!

Coaches,
I'm curious what the take on this is. With hard economic times most weddings are on friday nights. I'm in my 2nd year as HC and my best friend asked me to be in the wedding which would have me miss a game in October.
I'm curious where you all stand on this? I have not responded to his invitation yet, but I do not feel comfortable at all missing a game. I have never missed one as a coach and curious what the insight or rules are on this.
Anybody got similar situations and/or stories of this?

So I'm taking over a program (was the DC) and want to revise the summer. I had some questions on the summer program and was hoping to get some feedback. Here is what we do and need some insight:
We go in the morning from 8-11. We lose 8-10 guys to summer school and 3-4 are our main athletes. My coaches want to hold afternoon sessions for them. I do not feel as though we should as I want to encourage players to take school seriously and this lets them off the hook.
How many days per week? How many weeks of the summer?- We go 6 weeks Mon-Friday which gives us roughly 30 practices all summer.
Weights/ Conditioning - This is a huge part of our summer which I like. Usually 1 hour in weightroom and 30-45 on field. More? Less?
Football/Contact - We can hit everyday if we wanted to BUT we dont'. However, we hit the first three weeks minimal vs each other to prepare us for the 4th week contact camp. We stop after this and do not hit weeks 5-6. We seemed very burnt out this year weeks 9-10 as I thought we hit way too much. Thoughts?
Film- do you teach on the field and/or watch any film?
Goals - What should a player get out of the 6 weeks of summer camp?
Thanks!
