Guys,
Trying to completely change around the culture of our program. Have the best athletes not buying in, while the high character kids (not very good athletically) are totally bought in and busting their behinds off.
Question; can you win with high character kids?

For those educators, flipping the classroom is the new method of teaching at some schools. We have a few teachers use this method and like it. The kids essentially listen to lecture at home and the time with teacher is used differently.
Has anybody used this strategy in the world of football? I see some pas out there and curious if anybody has tried it or not.

Do you guys have your coaches there in summer? We go mornings and only half staff are teachers which fits am practice.
Is it more important to go off kids schedule or coaches convenient?

What are the core values in your program? How many do you have? How do kids know what they are?

Wish we had that problem, our combined JV/Varsity last year was about 50 kids. Summer weight room attendance averaged around 20 kids partly because it was held in the morning, so we lost any kid in summer school and any kid that needed to work. We are going 630am to eliminate excuse of college prep courses, SAt class, Summer school, job, etc.

What about the weight program? We are combining this year but will have 80 plus kids.

Coaches,
Do you do summer with both programs combined? It seems like a great idea. Curious on why or why not?

It was the best thing I read over winter break. I'm still in the process of reading Trickett's book so that could change but still Which one is that?

Reading a book about Bobby Knight and he has chapter dedicated to practice.
What is the definition of a productive practice?

Mornings for sure. Then we don't battle the million baseball, basketball and Lacrosse games they play at night. Totally agree!!! In addition to orthodontist, personal trainer, S.A.T. prep class, tutor, and picking up Grandma at the airport. We try to tailor things so that our kids can get done what needs to be done and still be kids. Sometimes we have to remind our young coaches that our kids are 16-18 years old and are not on scholarship or receiving obscene sums of money to play football. I think time of morning is preference….. IMO I dont think its unreasonable to get there by 7am.

When do you teach and work on football? Aren't we talking about summer? He's probably not teaching then. Last year we had practices on Sunday nights. There usually wasn't much going on so the players didn't have many excuses not to show up. We typically had over half of our team show up on those nights. Teach = Run plays, pass plays, coverage, stunts, etc.

7:00-8:30am Monday - Thursday We lift, do some agility work... QB/WR's stay after to throw the ball around couple days a week for 15-30 minutes. When do you teach and work on football?

Are you talking about like summer camp practices (what used to be 2-a-days) or practices you have throughout the summer? When I was in HS we did 2-a-days at 6 am, but we were in the desert and heat regulations forced our hands. If you are referring to summer long practices then I've done 8 am and 9 am starts; I think 6:30 is ridiculous. I get it, we want kids to sacrifice, work hard, and dedicate to the team; but asking them to consistently show up that early is too much. Let them at least sleep in during the summer for a few weeks. I realize my post is assuming summer practice for you means 4-5 days a week for 4-6 weeks. I'm talking the summer camp where we lift, run and do agility. The reason we like the early start (630?) id because it allows kids to work, SAT class, etc.

We are thinking of going early am (630am) this summer. We can't use the word mandatory but we are over listening to excuses (math clas, sat class, etc).
What time does your summer practice start and end?

Halfway through and I'm really enjoying it. ]My only issue is that it's hard to build culture in off season when kids play multiple sports and we aren't together all the the time.

We started the year 2 and 4. We were playing kids one way and we were running practices like I had learned from so many college coaches at clinics and practices. We then changed to two way players and more of a traditional schedule. We won the next 8 out of 9, including 5 playoff games on the road to win our state title. Below are some things we now feel strong about in practices. (We have 80 players 9-12 and half are varsity, half JV.) First, we do not practice on Monday. We do a character class for 45 minutes and watch film for 45 minutes. We break it up a bit to keep focus. (JV does a walk through during film. They play on Thursday.) We now believe everyone must practice both sides. Not only for emergencies but we feel it makes the kids better overall players. Our offensive line immediately played more physical and gained confidence. We have one staff, when varsity is on O the D coaches have JV and visa versa. Tuesday is primarily varsity D except for the last 15 minutes. Then we flip Wednesday. Then Thursday is still full pads. We do half D and half O and the majority of both are team with good on good and a quick whistle. This may be the best thing we changed. As the HC and OC I started running the scout team for our D. We just couldn't get good reps. On the weekends I watched their O and wrist coached it exactly. It was extremely detailed on their job. For example, it didn't say "power" it would say "rap for ps LB". I would then take the best players not on 1st team defense and make my scout team. I often played QB bc I could simulate it easier after watching film. We didn't huddle, I just called out the number on the wrist coach. We got at least 3x as many plays in vs holding up play cards. It was so effective we actually had two scout teams for the state championship week and they ran single wing. If you've played a single wing team you know how hard that is. Then my varsity DC ran scout team for us when we were doing team O. He pretty much used his starting D as the scout team. We just had a couple start both ways. But several players played both sides at some point in each game. On D days we did a tackling circuit, indys, inside/7 on 7, and team. On O days we did indys, inside/7 on 7, and team. Nothing fancy, just lots of reps and a demand for focus during practice. On offensive days we ran 80 plays on average. We started each practice with a different STs or two and did not do a big review on Thursday like I've been a part of at other places. Can you explain character class?

Biggest issue was during team even though 1s are getting instruction and reps the 2s felt it was period they could mess around. We NEVER stop team to instruct because of this. We want to get as many reps in as possible. Only "instruction" are short coaching points from the OC (me), or personnel switches by who ever is running the scout defense What are 2s doing during team?

We had a problem with kids staying engaged this year during practice. Example, on walk thru for offense we would explain a new play and 2nd O would come out and not be able to run the play because not paying attention. On D we had same issue. Look in back and see socializing a ton when instruction going on.

What are some ways you kept team engaged and make sure they were paying attention?

We are at a school where kids lack football IQ. I want to get a creative way for kids to watch bowl games and NFL playoffs. However, want them to learn the game as well. Anybody ever done anything like this or watched the game where they teach kids the basics of football???

What is your policy for a player informing you if he will miss practice??? That is our #1 method for installing discipline on the team. If you let them get by missing practice, ALL IS LOST. NOTE: I'm talking about High School age: 1. After the FIRST unexcused miss = they have a lot of extra running, OR, (if you prefer) sit out the next game. 2. After the SECOND unexcused miss = we take up the uniform for the rest of the season. This may seem severe, but it has WORKED FOR US!!! Others may extend the "death penalty" to the THIRD miss. THE MAIN THING IS THAT YOU NEVER ISSUE A RULE YOU WON'T ENFORCE!!! What is considered excused?

I don't like email or text at ALL. They need to be able to speak to me in their own voice. A big part of that is for when they get older and need to face the music. Too many kids nowadays live in a world where they can't communicate unless it's impersonal. I don't like it. What if home sick?

We do email and I think it allows kids to hide that way. May say has to be in person.
