Our state (CA) is going no helmets this summer. We can still do 7 on 7 though.
Any coach who has no helmets, do you still do 7 on 7? Dont you think this is more dangerous?

As a DC I think it is hard to do any team or inside run without helmets.

Coaches,
When hiring assistant coaches (varsity) it it more important to: - have experience but you have never had on staff. Good resume and reference
- loyal young guys, former players who have same mission as you but not much coaching

I'm in CA and we are slowly starting to move away from contact and now helmets. Apparently this new law will not allow us to wear helmets all summer. This will be a shock for most, especially we do 7on7 with helmets.
What are rules in your state?

We have a homeroom period. It's 25 minutes. I introduce a topic we work on a short exercise. It's intimate enough we can bring up our baggage without anyone getting embarrassed. Plus I'm framing it as a special class just for them and they will go out and spread the message. I pulled the kids out of their normal homeroom. It's not graded so no one gives a heck. I bring them pizza on Friday and made them T shirts to add some buy in. I'm trying to teach them a common language and skills of accountability and dealing with stress. We challenge them to go out and start using the language and practice the skills during class and practice. We challenge them to start using the language with their teammates. We have to be intentional as Vint has suggested. We are in a tough community with lots of socioeconomic issues. The kids need this for personal and football life. We have been quite successful of late but have run into some tough games where it was clear the other team is just mentally tougher. What do you call this? Leadership class? Character building?

You can do it before school for 10 minutes or possibly during lunch. Sit down with your coaches and kids and figure out a creative time to get something done. It will be worth it. Among staff we keep coming up with ways to be INTENTIONAL about character and leadership. After 2 weeks of leadership class there is an amazing difference in buy in. As to those who are coordinators like me you have to sell your vision to HC. Show him your plan. Most HCs want to do this sort of thing if they are any good. Get him on board he will get the rest of staff on board. Likely he has established some sort of vision. Tap into that and sell it. Good leaders listen and allow their leaders to grow as well. When is two week class? Summer? Can you PLEASE EXPLAIN?

Briles has some that exact same presentation before at another clinic I saw him at. I was disappointed with his presentation which was basically him reading stats about his teams production with no football info shared. Frank Beamer got into his special teams schemes a bit but not long enough to go into detail. He also kept talking about players as numbers (# 1 and 10, # 2 and 9) but never really explained how he sets up the numbering system which is a pet peeve of mine. The Baltimore LB and DC and Austin the DC from the Lions were all awesome. The coaching point from the Baltimore DC regarding ripping over vs under blockers was worth the clinic admission, a great tip with an explanation on why it's correct. Martz and Trestman were both super basic and I felt a disappointment given their credentials. The Texas HS Coach (3 Back Runs) and the NJ HS Coach (Power Runs) were good, wish they had more time to go more in depth. Also really enjoyed the Baltimore kicking coach, pretty high energy and got a few bare bones kicking tips I'll be able to take back. The Michigan breakout sessions were awesome. I bounced around between a few and really enjoyed all of them. But that being said, it was an awesome clinic. The access they provided was great and being able to watch practice was pretty cool except the ushers at the stadium during practice were power tripping big time. Can you explain ripping over and under blocks??

I have assigned to give a presentation on how as a coach I prepare kids for the future off the field. Thinking leadership, real life skills, etc. Looking for anything anybody would share I could add to my presentation.

What do coaches do during spring ball? I feel Spring Ball in Ca (Helmets only) is more towards skill guys. Trying to find way to get lineman involved.
Also, what do you do on d days to teach run stuff?

Coaches,
I'm trying to gain a sense of how much time your program devotes to football in the summer.
Is your summer more focused on football skill (Indy, scheme, technique) OR to weights and condo? We seem to be 50-50 on both.

Never heard this before as an excuse to miss off season weights. Anybody hear this one before? If so, what did you say to parent and kid? Remember I cant tell a kid it is mandatory but we all know it is.

Every successful team I watch on film is fast to the point of attack with their first two steps.
How do you get faster with your first two steps???
