I have heard of one other school doing this and I am curious if anyone else does or variations of it.
At a small U.P. school about 10 years ago, the JV and Varsity did warm-ups and individual time together, then they split up and did team separate.
The philosophy was now there were 4 coaches (2 on Varsity, 2 on JV) teaching individual techniques. So...If I'm the offensive line coach: I coach the same kids for 4 years in a row. When they first learn how to block as a freshmen, they will be asked to block exactly the same way when they are senior.
Same with other positions.
The other thing it did was allow for a DL coach, LB coach, DB coach, etc.
Anyone do this? I really like this idea, mainly because as the varsity OL coach, I would sure like to get my hands on those freshmen and get them to block the way I want them to block when they are seniors! Our JV coaches do a GREAT job....but this way might be better.
...and....GO!

I have never coached with a team (3 schools) where the JV was a separate team. It has always been ONE team...and the guys who don't play on Friday nights are playing JV. The Frosh teams have been separate in some cases, but never JV.

When I played (haven't started coaching yet) JV and Varsity practiced together. Only thing we did different was when Varsity was on offense JV was on Defense. Varsity would do offensive individual while JV was on Indy D. The few One way players would double rep whichever side of the ball they were on. So when we came together for team the scout team which was mostly JV came off of offensive skill work. We had a coach for every position though.

We have no choice but to do this. 42 on the roster but who knows how many we have day to day suited up and able to practice. If we didn't have everyone together we couldn't run a scout team. Just no way numbers wise it works for us to have separate practices.

Where I am at we have 3 distinct and separate levels, Varsity, Frosh-Soph or Frosh. Players can only be a part of one team in any given week. You can not play a minimum number of snaps in the Varsity game and then go play for the Frosh-soph team (which wouldn't work because our Frosh-Soph team plays right before Varsity).
We practice Varsity and Frosh-Soph together still because we platoon coaches and like the consistency we get from it. We just started this year so we'll see the long-term benefits down the road.

We are fortunate to have 4 varsity coaches, 2 JV and 2 Frosh. We do special teams with the JV but nothing else except individual during doubles. We do try to run another scout O going against our varsity D during tam but that depends on the JV's abilities. This year no but the last 2 years it was very helpful.

This is my first year as HC and we are two platooning our team by JV/Varsity. I hadn't really heard or seen it being done, but after last year watching 25 JV kids stand on the sideline for the majority of practice and not get better, I decided I wanted more for them. We are fortunate enough to have enough staff to manage this. What happens is everyone does Indy time together, but then we split from there. 7 on 7, Inside Run and team are completely separate. We have just enough kids to have a full scout team for Varsity and JV. We have 3 coaches with the JV and 6 with the varsity. I do like how it has worked out for us, as everyone is getting a ton of reps. Our JV isn't the most talented team and are 3-3 on the year, but could easily be 6-0 as they've lost games only by a few in each.
Does it make the difference? I don't know. I'd like to think that them getting much more attention has helped them to be better. I think it does. If we just rolled those guys out on Monday night like many do, I don't know that the results would be good. Maybe it would be the same. I don't know. But I do know even that little freshmen who isn't very good gets some reps somewhere and maybe he will turn out to be better because he got time and felt it was worth his while to continue to play.
We will see over the course of a few years here. But so far I do like it. If you have the capability to do it, I think it's worth your while.
I will say there are times where a JV kid is on varsity special teams or if we need a scout player due to injury it might create a cluster over there for the JV coaches but their job is just to keep rolling with whoever they have and work on getting them better.
