Being an Army guy, every time I walked into a new unit I was handed an SOP (Standing Operating Procedures). Basically it's all the stuff you do all the time, just written down so the new guy has a clue. It has checklists, battle drills, phone numbers, etc.
So... Does anyone have an SOP for their football program? If so, can I see it? <NOTE: The playbook could be part of the SOP...but that's not what I'm worried about.
We had a new coach come in for our 7th grade this year and simple stuff that we all take for granted, he had to learn all by himself if one of us forgot to tell him.
Simple things like: 1) Travel time to <Name that town> is approximately 2:15 by bus. 2) When in <Name that town> the McDoanald's phone number is (123)867-5309. Call approximately 20 min. prior to arriving for quicker service 3) If a player gets injured in <name that town again> here is the hospital phone number and location.
I have a lot more ideas....it could be as detailed or as general as you want.
Anyone do this? Waste of time? Great idea?
John

Very good idea. This type of document/binder would help greatly so everyone is on the same page. I'm our school's head baseball coach and I try to put in writing a lot of info mentioned in the OP in my program manual I give to our coaches. After reading this I'm going to make a separate packet with just that type of info for new coaches.

I think it will be great for new coaches, but the other reason is it takes thinking out of the equation for simple stuff. "Hey Coach, what time do you want your bus to leave?" "Hey Coach, are you stopping to eat after the game? "Hey Coach, what does your team want to do at halftime?"
A million little decisions that have to be made every week.... Make the decisions during the winter...write them down...BAM!
I'm pretty surprised no body does this...

great idea and perfect for an assistant to tackle (let the header polish it). The challenge with an SOP is that they are a wealth of knowledge but it requires people to actually read it. SOPs are geared for those looking for information with minimal assumptions. The side benefit is that it requires the author to galvanize practices/procedures to clear definitions. I'm sure the AD / principal would appreciate this documentation, if for nothing else for CYA. The value of an SOP is dependent on the quality of your assistants (intended audience). This would be a good exercise for a young assistant to spend his energy on in the off-season. I would get your HC behind this so that all that effort pays off and that these are reviewed/taught to the entire staff (so maybe everyone else gets the hint that this kind of effort is needed). Part of this leads to defining expectations of assistants / players going into a season: drive.google.com/file/d/0B3p5wkumv513YjJlMmYzMjEtYmFlOS00YjJmLWE2OGMtYmUyYzhkYjhmODRj/view?usp=sharing

Things like this are invaluable for a young coach like myself. I'm sure many others agree. Thanks again.

We have a policy manual that covers a bunch of these things. We go over this policy manual with the players during pre season. We only go over what SOP's they need to know for the pre season. We will later go over the SOP's for games and travel right before the first game.
