Hi, I am a newer coach and was looking into coaching certifications and wanted to see if anyone had one(s) that they recommended. I have a good knowledge of the game I just would like to have something to show as back-up when interviewing. Thanks for your help.

There are several organizations such as USA Football, Youth Football Coaches Association, etc. that offer courses to get certified as a coach. I have looked into a few of them and just wanted to see if anyone had a recommendation about them.

I don't know. I never got one and I don't know any coaches who have. I would check with the organization you're going to work for and see if they require one of these first (or which one they require).

It's required to coach HS football in some states. Check with your state association to see if you state is one.

I hve an FCCA certification. Some of it was good, mostly the stuff on pedagogy and drill structuring, but they didn't teach you the principles of a well-drawn play, they didn't go through all the fundamentals. It really required you to come in already knowing a fair bit, and it wasn't anything earth-shattering being taught.

This leads me to ask a question about what accreditation is required for your coaches? Do they have to do specific courses to have at least the paper credentials? (even if they don't mean anything in regard to quality or ability).
All of our sports, not just football have a range of requirements to coach at school or club level, including differing certification or accreditation processes.

Coach, go here: www.nfhs.org/content.aspx?id=3494. Lots of different certifications you can get. They also have a free 20 minute seminar on Concussions. In this day and age, that will look good in the hiring process.

I know it is required in Wisconsin and I think Minnesota to be a coach at the high school level. I did mine through AESP. I think it was $90 for the book and a test on coaching principles. However, i got mine for free because my school offers a coaching class that includes the test.

I've been certified through USA Football for 4 years now.
They offer one of the better ones because you get an insurance package with certification.

I am also USA football certified. I only did it to prepare (refresh) my self. I know my city doesn't ask for it, but I do it as a personal thing, and it does teach a lot of great things as well. But like Coach Seth said, they offer an insurance package with certification.

I've had my Level 1 for a few years and in Alberta they didn't offer the Level 2 during my off season (coaching fall football and spring basketball things overlapped on me) and couldn't make the weekend course work (always happened on a tournament weekend for us).

Well two nights ago I had to go back and complete the level 1 coaching course through nfhs.com, fundamentals in coaching if i remember correctly. Our district wont let you coach unless you have that done.
